Electronic Rock

• Iconography-Rock videos tend to be the opposite to pop videos in colour and purpose.
Rock videos tend to use a much darker colour palette to that of pop videos with black
featuring heavily in many of the videos in the genre, this represents the often darker, grittier
sound of rock music and the narrative of the music. Videos of this genre tend to be far more
performance based than the other two genres, with many literally being the band playing the
song at a concert.
• Lighting-The lighting is commonly always used on the performer singing with bright light
shining. Usually the background is in a dark setting giving only focus to the performer and
sometimes there will be a lot of lights flashing around sometimes coloured as well. The props
they use are very iconic to the rock theme especially in clothing usually wearing dark clothes
such as leather or wearing very unusual clothes that can be colourful or be in different
textures.
• Camera Work/Cinematography- We see different types of camera shots in Electronic
music it really depends on the music video itself, but a popular one that most rock music
videos use are extreme close ups on the singer. This use of focus allows the audience to
concentrate on facial appearance of the artist as well as the emotions that they show. This
shot is very effective for the audience and in the music video. Rock music uses a lot of
camera shots to show what they want to show like the setting will be a wide camera shot or
POV shot, over the shoulder shot and more.
• Types of Characters-In this genre the singer is usually the one and only main character
but can also be surrounded by other characters to represent something, or sometimes the
group are the main characters. The character in theses videos express some sort of emotion
most of the time by singing and doing various actions in the story of the music video.
Expressing somethings with a particular theme like love, pain, hope, death and more.
Setting-The setting for Electronic Rock can change to different settings but usually will be
familiar place that people would know like a house or high school depending on the song. The
setting is in a big house with no else except for our main character. The place has various of
rooms and hallways making it looked old fashion the house. Its is dark with only minimal light at
night time.
Lyrical Meaning- Most rock musicians sing and composed the music they have created the
songs they sing always have a particular theme in the genre such as love, hate, fear and more but
can also very upbeat bright themes like friends, fun, teenagers and more. I looked at the song sail
by AWOL nation for example Lyrically, the song's protagonist is wanting to "sail" away from his
problems, which are overwhelming him, and it seems he is unable to shake off the fear of not
being able to meet up to people's expectations.
Narrative-Narratively the song sail shows themes of fear and escape, it tells a story of a man
entering a house relieved to have escaped from the threat outside. He shuts the blinds. He then
finds a tape recorder, and starts singing into it. He enters a bathroom and looks into a mirror, still
singing. As the light climbs up the stairs towards him, he hides inside a full bathtub. The beam
scans him in the bath. He is then being pulled across the floor by an unknown force; he attempts
to cling to a door-frame, but loses his grip. Shots of him closing a door and playing the song's
piano section. As the song's final chorus begins, the house shakes. Lights and lamps turn on and
off as gusts of wind blow. He is pulled by the mysterious force outside the house, and he is
levitated up into the sky as a set of floodlights flash on him. He drops the tape recorder.
