Director Lee Rainie gave a keynote at the NFAIS annual conference about the way the internet and mobile connectivity have transformed the worlds of networked individuals. He discussed how normal life has changed in the past decade because of three revolutions in technology: 1) the spread of broadband; 2) the rise of mobile connectivity; and 3) the emergence of technological social networks. He will discuss trends and likely future developments in technology that will shape the way people learn, share, and create information.
Lee Rainie will give the keynote presentation on "Learning in the Digital Age: Where Libraries Fit In." Lee will discuss the way people use e-book readers and tablet computers and how those devices are fitting into users' digital lives. He will describe how three revolutions in digital technology – in broadband, mobile connectivity, and social media – have created a new social operating system that he calls "networked individualism." He will use the Project's latest findings to help describe how librarians can serve the new educational needs of networked individuals.
: Lee Rainie, Director of the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, will discuss the Project’s most recent findings about Americans use the internet and their mobile devices to learn, share, and create information. He will discuss how the changed media environment is affecting learners’ expectations about the availability of information and the ways in which learning takes place. In this new environment, the traditional boundaries between home and school, teacher and pupil, public and private are breaking down and that is affecting the way learning occurs. Lee will describe how Pew Internet has looked at these subjects and the ways in which schools and families are responding to them.
In the opening keynote, “Networked Learners,” Lee Rainie discusses the latest findings of the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project about how teenagers and young adults have embraced technology of all kinds — including broadband, cell phones, gaming devices and MP3 players. He describes how technology has affected the way “digital natives” search for, gather and act on information.

Using data from both the Infinite Dial study from Edison Research and Triton Digital and a separate study from the Research Moms at Edison Research, Moms and Media features points on social media behaviors and device ownership as well as how today’s technology applies to their children.
The report showcases new tracking data about social networking, smartphones, Internet usage and online audio. It highlights how smart speakers are working their way into moms’ repertoire, and how other media fits into their busy days. In addition, for the first time in Moms and Media, we explore how moms feel about children using technology and new media.
More than any other medium, the Internet is crucial for getting through even just a typical day. In Moms and Media 2018, we see just about every mom has Internet access. According to the research, 98% of moms have Internet access from any location, which means they can get online either at home, work, school or a library. Reinforcing the Internet’s importance, 70% of moms report that they get online in two or more locations.
