Mollusks have a free-swimming larval stage called a trochophore. Their muscular foot helps them move and a thin mantle tissue covers most of their body. They secrete calcium carbonate from their mantle to form a protective shell, and their visceral mass contains internal organs beneath the mantle. They use a radula tongue and siphon tubes to feed and breathe. Mollusks have an open circulatory system where blood is not always contained within vessels.
