Over the years, the use of video games in school systems have been adopted and documented in modern education. Research is now readily available for educators to explore the advantages that video games can bring into the classroom. While research on the positive effects of learning with video games in education is well-known, it is important to review just how quickly academic thinking has evolved over the past two decades. Today, the question on many educators' minds is not video games value for education, but it’s validity as a varsity-level sport. Many wonder how video gaming culture is affecting students in school today. How will thinking change as esports become integrated into the education system?
The first-ever academic and peer-reviewed journal dedicated to computer game studies was first published in 2001, by Espen Aarseth. At the time, Aarseth was the Associate Professor in Humanistic Informatics at the University of Bergen. The journal she creatively named “Computer Game Studies” is still active today and available at gamestudies.org. In issue 1 of volume 1, Aarseth proclaims that video games are, “of greater cultural importance than, say, movies, or perhaps even sports.” In 2001, online video gaming was just starting to become a reality and competitive esports were known only to small groups of informed gamers. Summary:
According to the article of the guardian.com, which focuses on the claims that video games lead to violence by Dean Burnett. Video games are the cause of violence that is what the media says when a school shooting happens. Video games are always blamed on those acts. Recent studies have shown that video games really do cause violence. Dr Mario Vance conducted a longitudinal study that monitors the anger levels of gamers and the results have shown that there is an increase in aggression and anger levels. The media claims that gamers can’t distinguish between fantasy and reality, but the research proves that there isn’t enough evidence to support that claim. In addition, some people such as Roy Parker are against video games and think that video game should be banned, because of the blood and violence that they show.
Quotations:
"It's ridiculous that they're even allowed. I don't want my children growing up in a world where horrible stuff like that is just out there where anybody can come across it and be damaged by it."
"A bias is one thing, but turning a brutal and deadly shooting into an excuse to attack a tenuously linked entertainment medium? That borders on pathological."
"The media's main concern appears to be that enthusiastic gamers can't differentiate between games and the real world, so violent games will result in violent behaviour. But anyone who has the cognitive faculties to purchase, set up and operate modern games consoles won't have trouble differentiating between a cartoonish fantasy world and reality."
Paraphrasing:
Original paragraph:
Dr Vance and his colleagues assessed daily reports submitted by willing gamers as to their aggression levels and violent tendencies, and over 90% of subjects reported dramatic increases in anger and violent inclinations whenever they viewed a news story that associated video games and violent behavior. The remaining subjects were not included as they were typically too busy punching walls or screaming incoherent threats at traffic. The media's main concern appears to be that enthusiastic gamers can't differentiate between games and the real world, so violent games will result in violent behavior. But anyone who has the cognitive faculties to purchase, set up and operate modern games consoles won't have trouble differentiating between a cartoonish fantasy world and reality.
Paraphrased paragraph:
Dr Vance and his team receive daily reports that video gamers do daily, those reports are about the gamers levels of aggression and violence, and a huge amount of gamers have had a big increase in the level of violence, aggression and anger when they saw an article in a newspap.
First of all we all know how the technology today has beco.docxMARRY7
First of all we all know how the technology today has become in our lives
important.Technology has something good and something bad or it will affect us in a bad way specially in the children because they don't have enough experience in life so they accept anything new and don't think too much about what will happen in their future.Video games become the most dangerous on children thinking because there are many video games teaching them how to kill and make the children have less mercy. The people who made these video games would like to made a new generation with a lot of wars so they start with kids because more easy to teach them than the adults. The children are like an empty page so we can write what we want it to be if we want the page still clean we need to write something good and useful or if we want to make it unclean we will write something bad .Many children cannot judge what is good and what is not good for them. This kind of game have message for our children ,those people who made this games have message in there mind so we have to be careful with these messages.Video games teaching children how to kill.
Some games let the player kill other people even if he don't want to kill so if he didn't kill
he lose the game.So we should see what our kids playing and we need to watch them while
playing. This problem not just in one or two countries today it is in all over the world,we afraid
for the next generation because they will take it easy and can't handle.”“violent video games result in public attention after a school shooting”(Anderson,Gentile, Buckley 3) this is another article agree with the past one “violent video games make chilreen violence in their life” (Kutner, Olson 18).
Our children are victims of these games because it teaches them how to be a killer from there first age.If the children accustomed to these games they will be a killer some time and they will first
start with killing an animal so we just need more monitor our children because if we don't they
could recreate what they see in the video games. Some people say that “it is short of time of violent and the kids can know that is game”(Gentile),that is wrong. The children will see a lot of blood every day he or she may thinking about doing it in their real life so we need to be careful. For example in the popular game Manhunt, the player stalks his prey and kills them. In 2004, Warren Leblanc killed a child after playing this game, “Warren Leblanc lured 14-year-old Stefan Pakeerah to his death in a Leicester park in 2004, killing him with a knife and claw hammer. The victim’s parents blamed his addiction to Manhunt”( 118) .
More of these games the children will have less in their emotions. Many children who playing
these kind of games have bad dreams while they sleep and they would talk while.
Children become violent more than before because of these games.
Children have less mercy and become a violent too.Today many kids go ...

First article : Shooting in the dark:
Full Text
The young men who opened fire at Columbine High School, at the movie theater in Aurora, Colo., and in other massacres had this in common: they were video gamers who seemed to be acting out some dark digital fantasy. It was as if all that exposure to computerized violence gave them the idea to go on a rampage -- or at least fueled their urges.
But did it really?
Social scientists have been studying and debating the effects of media violence on behavior since the 1950s, and video games in particular since the 1980s. The issue is especially relevant today, because the games are more realistic and bloodier than ever, and because most American boys play them at some point. Girls play at lower rates and are significantly less likely to play violent games.
A burst of new research has begun to clarify what can and cannot be said about the effects of violent gaming. Playing the games can and does stir hostile urges and mildly aggressive behavior in the short term. Moreover, youngsters who develop a gaming habit can become slightly more aggressive -- as measured by clashes with peers, for instance -- at least over a period of a year or two.
Yet it is not at all clear whether, over longer periods, such a habit increases the likelihood that a person will commit a violent crime, like murder, rape, or assault, much less a Newtown-like massacre. (Such calculated rampages are too rare to study in any rigorous way, researchers agree.)
"I don't know that a psychological study can ever answer that question definitively," said Michael R. Ward, an economist at the University of Texas, Arlington. "We are left to glean what we can from the data and research on video game use that we have."
The research falls into three categories: short-term laboratory experiments; longer-term studies, often based in schools; and correlation studies -- between playing time and aggression, for instance, or between video game sales and trends in violent crime.
Lab experiments confirm what any gamer knows in his gut: playing games like "Call of Duty," "Killzone 3" or "Battlefield 3" stirs the blood. In one recent study, Christopher Barlett, a psychologist at Iowa State University, led a research team that had 47 undergraduates play "Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance" for 15 minutes. Afterward, the team took various measures of arousal, both physical and psychological. It also tested whether the students would behave more aggressively, by having them dole out hot sauce to a fellow student who, they were told, did not like spicy food but had to swallow the sauce.
Sure enough, compared with a group who had played a nonviolent video game, those who had been engaged in "Mortal Kombat" were more aggressive across the board. They gave their fellow students significantly bigger portions of the hot sauce.
Many similar studies have found the same thing: A dose of violent gaming makes people act a little more rudely than they would otherwise, at le ...

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

English 2 - Module 5 lesson 2
1. Module 4
Opinion Paragraphs
In everyday life, people have opinions about issues and talk
about them.
People also write their opinions. In college classes you often
have to express and support your opinions.
Information taken from:
Hogue, A. (2008). First Steps in Academic Writing. Longman.
2. There are four keys to writing a successful opinion
paragraph.
1. State your opinion clearly in the topic sentence.
2. Explain each reason in logical order.
3. Use facts to support each reason.
4. End with a powerful concluding sentence that your
reader will remember.
3. Facts and Opinions
Opinions are statements of someone’s belief. When you say, “I
believe…” or “I think that…” you are expressing your opinion.
Opinions are different from facts. People can disagree with opinions.
Facts are true statements that none can disagree with.
Facts Opinions

4. Model ~ Opinion Paragraph
Video Games and Violence
In my opinion, violent games are harmful to young people. First of all, playing
these games can cause changes in the behavior of Young people. According to
studies by psychologist, frequen players have poorer grades in school. They are also
more hostile and act more agressively toward their teaches and classmates. A
second reason is that they make young people less sensitive to violence in the real
world. The games make it fun to shoot and kill, and the line between play violence
and real violence becomes very thin or disapears entirely. Thirteen-year-old Noah
Wilson was stabbed to death by a friend who often played the violent game “Mortal
Combat”. Noah’s mother said, “The boy who stabbed him was acting out the part of
Cyrex,” who is a character in the game. A third reason is that violent video games
teach players to use violence to solve problems. If classmates tease you, don’t try to
work it out – bring a gun and shoot them. An extreme Example of this kind of thinking
resulted in the Columbine High School massacre. Two students shot and killed twelve
classmates, a teacher, and themselves at Columbine High School in Colorado. The
two Young killers were fans of the games “Doom” and “Wolfenstein 3D”. For these
three reasons, I feel that violent video games are harmful to young people and
should be controled – or, even better, banned.
5. Questions on the Model

8. Transition Signals for an
Opinion Paragraph
When you state an opinion, you should indicate that it is an opinion
by using an opinion signal, such as these:
Transition signal Example
In my opinion, … (with a comma) In my opinion, everyone should be
allowed to own a gun.
In my view, … (with a comma) In my view, no one should be
allowed to own a gun.
In believe (that)… (without a
comma)
I believe that smoking should not
be allowed in public paces.
I think (that)… (without a comma) I think smokers have rights too.
9. Transition Signals for an
Opinion Paragraph
To give information from an outside source (a book, a newspaper,
another person), use according to with a comma.
Transition signal Example
According to X, …
(with a comma)
According to Gregory, his mother never wrote to
him or sent him birthday cards.
According to a story in Science Today Magazine,
the Earth is becoming warmer.
According to a government report, few Russians
have more than one child.
10. Writer’s Tip!
When you write, you can use on the sentences
starters above (In my opinion, in my view…).
However, be careful not to use too many, or to use
them too often. That can make your writing sound
weak.
The reader knows that the paragraph is your opinion,
because you wrote it!.
11. Modal Auxiliaries for Expressing Opinions
When you speak, you introduce opinions with phrases
like I think, In my opinion, and I believe.
In general, these introductory phrases are not needed
in writing. They can even make you sound less sure of
your ideas. Instead, writers use grammatical methods
such as modal auxiliary verbs to express their opinions.
12. Affirmative
The city could

Modal auxiliary verbs show the
strength of a writer’s opinion or
argument.
