A paragraph contains sentences about a single topic that are usually between 5-10 sentences long. The first sentence of a paragraph is indented and contains the main idea or topic sentence. Supporting sentences in the paragraph provide more details and explanation about the topic sentence. A concluding sentence may be found at the end of the paragraph to restate the main idea or provide a final comment.
The sequence in which the isolate facets of a homogeneous set of compound subjects arrange themselves in the mind of the majority of readers may be called the absolute syntax of ideas. This may not coincide with the linguistic syntax—that is, the syntax of words—in all languages. It is conjectured that the syntax of facets is the same as the absolute syntax of ideas.
An essay is a literary composition. A five paragraph essay consists of an Introduction, three body paragraphs and a conclusion. The introductory paragraph has a thesis statement and the body paragraphs elaborate the ideas of the thesis statement. Finally, the conclusion summarizes the ideas of the body paragraphs.

2.2A Essay Poetry Unit
Choose a text from the assigned readings that you find interesting as the topic of a literary analysis: As you read, pay attention to the questions at the end of each section and each text as well as "Suggestions for Writing" at the end of each chapter.
The literary analysis is a persuasive essay, an argument that states a position, an interpretation of the literary text.
Thesis: Your thesis states your understanding of the poem's meaning (its central idea or theme) and the way the poem creates that meaning, those devices that contribute to that meaning.
From your study of the text you have selected, you are to analyze the text to determine what elements and devices support the interpretation that you have identified and stated.
Body paragraphs: The topic sentences of the body paragraphs connect the paragraph to the thesis and introduce the main idea of the paragraph.
Evidence: The support for the body paragraphs includes quoted text. As a general rule, incorporate that text into sentencing (rather than using entire lines or block quotations). The quoted material cannot speak for itself; you must explain how that specific text supports the point that you are making.

What is a paragraph?
A paragraph is a group of sentences about a
single topic. Together, the sentences of the
paragraph explain the writer’s main idea (most
important idea) about the topic.
In academic writing, a paragraph is often
between five and ten sentences long, but it can
be longer or shorter, depending on the topic.
The first sentence of a paragraph is usually
indented (move in) a few spaces.
2. Paragraph organization
1. The topic sentence: This is the
main idea of the paragraph. It is
usually the first sentence of the
paragraph, and it is the most general
sentence of the paragraph.

paragraph by repeating the main
idea or just giving a final comment
about the topic.
