Mendelian Genetics: 9th Grade High School Biology
Day 1
Headings Explanation
Georgia Standards SB2. Students will analyze how biological traits are passed on to successive generations.
Objective(s)
Learning Goal(s)
Understanding of the standards will be accomplished by each student that is able to:
a) explain the significance of Mendel’s experiments to the study of genetics
b) predict the possible offspring phenotypic and genotypic ratios from a cross using a Punnett square
Mobile App Used Punnett Calc ($0.99) https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/punnett-calc/id501273721?mt=8
Student Grouping Students will be grouped based upon the technology available. Students will be discretely placed with a
partner who has the required technology to use the Mobile Apps. (A survey from the beginning of the
semester asking about technology students have will be used to make groups). Students who have their own
devices will be paired up with students who do not have their own devices first, and then others will be placed
together accordingly and will be able to use the school provided technology.
Activities/Lesson  Direct instruction on heredity/inheritance, Mendel, dominant & recessive traits, genotypes &
phenotypes, and monohybrid punnett squares.
 The students will have their notes at hand while they access their Mobile App-Punnett Calc.
 Punnett Calc allows students to do many different types of calculations which we will use as a method
of double checking their answers. They will be doing the calculations with a partner on paper and use
the app in order to check their responses before moving on to the next set of punnett square crosses.
This not only saves me time by having to walk around and check all students answers, it will give them
a sense of independence and responsibility for learning how to cross them on their own.
 At the end of class, students will send in a tweet as the closure activity. (See below in assessment)
Instructional
Strategies
1. Students will have direct instruction for the notes at the beginning of class which will set up the
content for the app we will be using in this activity.
2. Students will send a Tweet to the group #Mrs_K_Bio_2222 at the end of class as a closure activity in
which students will summarize the key points they learned in this lesson. The next day we will open
with the responses from the tweets sent in.
Materials iPhones, iPads, or Laptops with iTunes installed
Evaluation &
Assessment
Students will send a Tweet to the group #Mrs_K_Bio_2222 at the end of class as a closure activity in which
students will summarize the key points they learned in this lesson. The next day we will open with the
responses from the tweets sent in. All students will be required to submit a tweet or they will lose points for
participation.

Day 2
Headings Explanation
Georgia Standards SB2. Students will analyze how biological traits are passed on to successive generations.
Objective(s)
Learning Goal(s)
Understanding of the standards will be accomplished by each student that is able to:
a) analyze genetic patterns to determine dominant or recessive inheritance patterns
b) summarize examples of dominant and recessive disorders
c) construct human pedigrees from genetic information
d) distinguish between various complex inheritance patterns
Mobile App Used 1. Gene Screen (Free) https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/gene-screen/id447754230?mt=8
Activities/Lesson  At the beginning of class, students will be randomly placed into Buzz Groups and the tweets from the
day before will be projected on the screen. Students will have 2 minutes to review and discuss the
tweets from their peers as a review from the previous day’s lesson. Any questions or misunderstandings
can be cleared up during this time before moving on to the next lesson.
 Direct instruction on Genetic disorders will be given and students will read in the textbook about all of
the characteristics they need to know.
 The students will have their notes at hand while they access their Mobile App-Gene Screen.
 Using the Gene Screen App, students have the opportunity to how recessive genetic traits and diseases
are inherited and how certain diseases are more prevalent in different populations. Gene Screen also
provides information on some recessive genetic diseases and genetic screening programs.
 At the end of class, students will send in a tweet as the closure activity. (See below in assessment)
Instructional
Strategies
1. Students will be in Buzz Groups to review concepts from the previous day’s lesson.
2. Students will have direct instruction for the notes at the beginning of class which will set up the
content for the app we will be using in this activity.
3. Students will send a Tweet to the group #Mrs_K_Bio_2222 at the end of class as a closure activity in

Gene Screen also provides information on some recessive genetic diseases and genetic screening programs.  At the end of class, students will send in a tweet as the closure activity. (See below in assessment) Instructional Strategies 1. Students will be in Buzz Groups to review concepts from the previous day’s lesson. 2. Students will have direct instruction for the notes at the beginning of class which will set up the content for the app we will be using in this activity. 3. Students will send a Tweet to the group #Mrs_K_Bio_2222 at the end of class as a closure activity in which students will summarize the key points they learned in this lesson. The next day we will open with the responses from the tweets sent in. Materials iPhones, iPads, or Laptops with iTunes installed Evaluation & Assessment Students will send a Tweet to the group #Mrs_K_Bio_2222 at the end of class as a closure activity in which students will summarize the key points they learned in this lesson. The next day we will open with the responses from the tweets sent in. All students are required to submit a tweet or lose points for participation.
  • 3. Mendelian Genetics: 9th Grade High School Biology Day 3 Headings Explanation Georgia Performance Standards SB2. Students will analyze how biological traits are passed on to successive generations. Objective(s) Learning Goal(s) Understanding of the standards will be accomplished by each student that is able to: a) analyze genetic patterns to determine dominant or recessive inheritance patterns b) summarize examples of dominant and recessive disorders c) construct human pedigrees from genetic information d) distinguish between various complex inheritance patterns Mobile App Used 1. Gene Tutor ($2.99) https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gene-tutor/id534062019?mt=8 Student Grouping Students will be grouped based upon the technology available. Students will be discretely placed with a partner who has the required technology to use the Mobile Apps. (A survey from the beginning of the semester asking about technology students have will be used to make groups). Students who have their own devices will be paired up with students who do not have their own devices first, and then others will be placed together accordingly and will be able to use the school provided technology. Activities/Lesson  At the beginning of class, students will be randomly placed into Buzz Groups and the tweets from the day before will be projected on the screen. Students will have 2 minutes to review and discuss the tweets from their peers as a review from the previous day’s lesson. Any questions or misunderstandings can be cleared up during this time before moving on to the next lesson.  Direct instruction on Pedigrees and Gene Linkage will be given  The students will have their notes at hand while they access their Mobile App-Gene Tutor.  The Gene Tutor App, covers topics such as Mendelian Inheritance, Pedigree Analysis and Sex Linkage in Classical Genetics and DNA structure, Gene Expression and Gene Regulation in Molecular Genetics. The App contains: • Sample Questions for every topic (mainly Multiple Choice format). • Extensive Study Material in the form of web pages specifically designed for a mobile device and containing many figures and embedded videos • A Glossary covering the most commonly encountered terms • The ability to Flag questions for easy retrieval • A Shuffle option to get random questions from any topic or from the whole set overall • Three levels of questions with the option of limiting which level you get questions from  At the end of class, students will send in a tweet as the closure activity. (See below in assessment) Instructional Strategies 1. Students will be in Buzz Groups to review concepts from the previous day’s lesson. 2. Students will have direct instruction for the notes at the beginning of class which will set up the content for the app we will be using in this activity.
