This document proposes and evaluates a passive ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) system that employs multiple antennas at the reader and a single antenna at each tag. It first analyzes how multiple reader antennas can improve the maximum interrogation range of the system. It then proposes a blind adaptive beamforming algorithm to improve data transmission performance. Additionally, it proposes an estimator to determine the number of tags within range in order to enhance system throughput. Simulation results show that using multiple reader antennas can significantly improve both interrogation range and data transmission accuracy while the proposed tag estimation method helps improve system throughput.
