This presentation defines viruses and their characteristics such as being the smallest organisms and requiring a host cell. It describes the parts of a virus including the nucleic acid and protein coat. Different shapes of viruses are shown and the 6 steps of the lytic cycle are outlined as adsorption, entry, replication, assembly and release. Common routes of viral transmission like respiratory, fecal-oral, and insect vectors are provided. The Baltimore classification system of viruses is briefly explained grouping them by nucleic acids. Methods to treat viruses like vaccines and reduce risk through hygiene are mentioned.
