Telepsychiatry provides mental healthcare to rural communities through telemedicine. It has been found to be as effective as in-person treatment and patients are generally satisfied, though mental health professionals are less satisfied. The University of Virginia has implemented two models of telepsychiatry - a consultation care model and collaborative care model. The collaborative care model, which incorporates on-site mental health support, has been more successful at increasing follow-up rates and properly diagnosing patients. While telepsychiatry improves access, ongoing investment is still needed to expand services and support collaborative models of care.
