This study examined the impact of obtaining CT head scans for patients presenting with bizarre behavior at an urban academic hospital emergency department. A retrospective review of over 5 years of data found that CT head scans did not yield any acute findings. Obtaining CT head scans prolonged both the time from physician assessment to consultant evaluation and the total emergency department length of stay. The study aims to collaborate with other departments to improve evidence-informed processes around medically clearing psychiatric patients.
