Summary Of Lorraine Hansberry
Lorraine Hansberry, born May 19, 1930, made a very prominent contribution to
society in her short lived life. She was born to a middle class family as the
youngest of four children. Her father was a successful real estate broker who also
founded one of the first Negro banks in Chicago (Adams 247). Lorraine s mother was
a schoolteacher named Nannie Perry who later became a ward committeewoman.
In 1938, Lorraine s father took a stand against the real estate covenants in Chicago
due to the fact that they legally promoted housing discrimination. He chose to move
his family into a predominantly white neighborhood to prove his point and try to
make a change. The court case that resulted from this stand led to a lot of hostility
from those around the Hansberry family. There was a violent attack on the family s
home by a mob who threw bricks into the house while shouting. Even with this
reaction to the Hansberrys moving into the neighborhood, the family decided to stay
to stand their ground. The court case went all the way to the federal Supreme Court
where the ruling was that this kind of discrimination was unlawful. However,
Chicago continued restrictive covenants anyways and eventually the Hansberry

farm area. The plantation owner harvests cotton, tobacco, rice, sugar, and indigo.
Plantations usually ranged from 500 to 1000 acres that produce about 5000 plants.
The main colony that do plantation are the southern colonies, Maryland, Virginia,
South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. The reason the south did more of
plantation is because the geography and climate is just right for planting and

blacksmith means a black smitter of iron. Only blacksmiths in bigger cities created

The Foreigner Play Essay
I attended the Alley Theatre s production of The Foreigner at the University of
Houston on June 3rd at 8:00 pm. This is the first play I have seen in my life. I was
weak on Friday when I went to see the play because I was fasting and had not
broken my fast. However, there was something about the audience that night; it had a
very positive energy that increased my enthusiasm. There was also an old that sat
next to me who had a stern look on his face and laughed only twice throughout the
play, I think he was a critic. All in all, the playwas not what I imagined, it was way
funnier and more exciting. The actors were amazing. Jeffrey Bean, who played
Charlie Baker, had a realistic acting. Being that he was a foreigner from Britain
according to the play, he had a strong British accent which made it seem like he was
actually from Britain. Also, his body movements and gestures portray him as just

The costumes were naturalistic, fluid and they fit the roles well. For example,
Sergeant Froggy puts on an army uniform that suits his name and his character.
Catherine Simms puts on young spirited type of clothes that portray her carefree
nature. Overall, the costumes were nice, simple and went well with the set and the
characters. The setting of the play was Betty Meeks fishing lodge resort in
Georgia. It was a naturalistic set that had chairs, a counter, a fireplace with wood,
drinks and preserved reindeer hung on the walls. Betty served fried eggs on stage
and the actors actually ate it. Ellard Simms drank two bottles of soft drinks on stage
too. The most amazing part of the set to me was the rain. During act 1 of the first
scene, the rain seemed so naturalistic because water kept dripping down the windows.
Also, the sound of the lightning made it seem like there was actually a thunder. The
set, sound and lighting complemented each other well and eventually turned out to be
an amazing
