In Psychology there are many different theories; especially about development. And,
just like every theory there are pros and cons. Each theory was created by different
people with their own perspective and their own biases. It would be ignorant to say
that one theory had all the answers. There were two theories I read about that caught

who created four stages of development. They are called Sensorimotor (birth 2),
Preoperational (2 7), Concrete Operational (7 11), and Formal Operational (11
adulthood) stages. In his Sensorimotor stage, babies are using their senses to figure
out their surroundings. This explains why, when babies find something, they
instinctively put it in their mouth. During Preoperational, children are starting to
figure out that words connect to objects. Throughout the Concrete Operational stage,
kids are starting to rationally think through their ideas and understand them. They
also know the differences between specific objects and how to be reasoned with. In

The Consequences of Bringing the Past with You Immediately into Tim O Brien s
short story The Things They Carried the reader is introduced to First Lieutenant
Jimmy Cross and the letters he carried from his past back home. Throughout the
story, readers are also introduced to other items and supplies which were largely
determined by necessity (O Brien 1) as well as items deemed a luxury that each
individual soldier carried with him for one reason or another. Pictures,
memorabilia, and personal items all acted as a gateway into a portal which would
bring them back home to the ones they loved if only for five minutes at a time.
Although the pictures, memorabilia and personal items of Cross and his soldiers
alike, helped them recall back to an era much more peaceful, the consequences of
bringing the past with you can carry exceedingly negative side effects.
Within the short story, the audience learns that Jimmy Cross carries letters and
pictures from his crush from back home, Martha. Multiple times within the story
Jimmy Cross consults these pictures and letters to distract himself from the war
providing a bit of comfort in his harsh environment. With progression through the
story, readers find Jimmy Cross continuously reviewing the pictures and letters from
his dear Martha, letting his mind drift off thinking about her, distracting him from his
duties at hand. These distractions happen more and more often, eventually leading to
the most harrowing consequence. First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross s divergence from
his important tasks at hand, result in Ted Lavender being killed while under the
supervision of Cross himself. This being the key turning point for Cross, as he
starts to realize his lapse in judgment and focus, had directly cost the life of one of
his soldiers. This resulting in him discovering that the pictures and letters from
Martha, he was using as hope for his future back home, and comfort from the issues
at hand, were the stemming source of all his problems and distractions, which
ultimately cost the life of his soldier. Because of this realization, Cross burns the
pictures and letters from Martha, which he was holding onto in hopes that she

The book of Judges is a very structured literary piece that uses chronological structure
to make a point and emphasize an idea. Judges narrates the Israelites continual
decline in morality and their downward spiral away from God, through the accounts
of the judges, minor judges, and individuals. While many people use the book of
judgesto teach courage and strength, it would be more accurately described as a
book of brokenness and terror. The book of Judges begins with a prologue. The
prologue is twofold. The first part of the prologue takes a historical look back on the

The first judge introduced is Othniel, who was raised up by the Lord to deliver the
Israelites from the king of Mesopotamia. The land of Israel had rest for 40 years

Moabite king, Eglon, and the land experienced 80 years of rest. Shamgar is the
next judge in the narrative. The striking difference seen here is Shamgar does not
have a semitic name or any tribe affiliation, so it is possible that the Israelites were
delivered by a Gentile. The next judge, Deborah, is the only woman judge
mentioned. She is also said to have been a prophetess, and a judge with actual
judicial function, instead of a military leader. All the judges mentioned so far have
not been said to have been good and righteous leaders, but it has also not said they
have been immoral or corrupt as later judges are, so it can be assumed that they
were good judges. This drastically changes as we look at the next judges. The
narrative of judges takes a momentary break to mention the Lord sending a prophet
to the people of Israel. The prophet reminds the Israelites of the deliverance they
received from God in Egypt, and calls them not to fear the gods of the Amorites. The
