 In Primary 6, there will be an expectation that all
children respect each other, their environment
and all adults in the school.
 We encourage every child to take increasing
responsibility for themselves, their learning and
the wider school.
 We ask the children to try their best at all times,
showing enthusiasm and pride in their work.
How you can help?How you can help?
Please support your children in preparing for school
each day, your child should bring:
 a sharp pencil and ruler
 a rubber
 a pritt stick
 highlighter pens
 library book
 homework diary
 a healthy, nut free snack
 a P.E kit- black shorts and white t-shirt (including
jogging bottoms and outdoor P.E shoes)
 water bottle
Please ensure that your child’s name is on all of their
belongings.

 Ask questions to check understanding, especially
encouraging them to ‘read between the lines’.
 Ask the child to summarise what they have just read
in their own words.
 Promote the value of reading a wide variety of texts

 Regular practise of number bonds and times tables
and associated division facts.
 Quick fire mental maths calculations and
discussions about maths in real life contexts.

 Test them on the words.

 Using online activities such as Sumdog, Purple Mash
and www.topmarks.co.uk can help to aid motivation
and provides easy opportunities for regular practise in
Maths and Language.
 Have a look at the profiling tools for Second level
in Maths and Language. These can be found on
the school blog (search ‘profiling tool’). These will
give you an idea of what P6 children will be
learning about this year and might give you more
of an insight into what you could focus on at
home.
HomeworkHomework
In P6, children will be taking responsibility for
recording their homework in homework diaries. We
would appreciate all homework diaries to be
checked and signed.
All homework will be given on a Monday and
should be handed in on Friday.
SpellingSpelling
Each week an activity will be given for children to practise
their spellings.
Pupils are tested on Friday.
Look, say, cover, write, check.
ReadingReading
This will usually consist of pages to read and a follow up
activity. However, sometimes other challenges may be given
such as research.
 
MathsMaths
Activities will include a mixture of worksheets, challenges,
games and online activities such as Sumdog.
 
Other Curricular AreasOther Curricular Areas
Throughout the year there will be opportunities to follow up
learning in IDL. This may include project work.
 Building our class community and getting to know
each other.
 Mini topic on our school aim – Independent
Learning.
 Community Contract– Class Expectations.
 Begun our IDL context – The Jacobites.
 Established grouping and routines.
The Jacobites- Literacy, Social Studies and Maths focus.
Maths- place value, decimals, estimation and rounding. IDL
focus linked to scale, angles and mapping.
Literacy- reading non-fiction texts, writing linked to The
Jacobites (diary entry, letter, instructions), spelling,
grammar and handwriting.
RME- Christianity.
Science- sound.
French- classroom routines.
PE – hockey.
Art – portraits.
 Quick start and registration.
 Reading- guided read of a text along with associated
activities.
 Handwriting – using Nelson scheme.
 Break time.
 Maths groups – teaching of a concept, mental maths
strategies, activities such as textbook work, active
games and ICT.
 Lunch time.
 Science – sound – theory and practical experiments.
 IDL – researching the Stuart family tree.
