Year 7 is the opening line
of your school career
“It's a funny thing about
mothers and fathers. Even when
their own child is the most
disgusting little blister you
could ever imagine, they still
think that he or she is
wonderful.”

Maths is not a spectator sport.
What do the students do?
• Individual work and Paired work
• Basic skills and applied skills
• Familiar and unfamiliar situations
• Multi-stage problems
• Regular assessments to track progress
• Target sheet so students know where they are going …
• … and how to get there.
The only way to learn Maths is to do Maths.
What can parents do?
• Provide an appropriate place to work free from distraction
• Be supportive and encouraging
• Ask your child to explain what they have been doing
• Let them work out the cost of shopping and the change
• Check that homework is completed
• Do not say ‘Well I was never any good at maths’.
• If you are positive then your child will be positive.
• If you have a concern contact the school.
The will to succeed is not nearly so important as
the will to prepare to succeed.
English is…
Reading
Writing
Spoken Language
Year 7 Students have seven one
hour lessons of English per two
week cycle.
Vocabulary, Spelling, Grammar
and Punctuation is taught through
the study of texts and writing.
Reading
Researchers found that children who receive
bedtime stories from their parents as infants
perform better than those who go without. But
reading for pleasure during secondary school
had the biggest effect.
National Literacy Survey 2013.
READING BOOKS ARE
ESSENTIAL – SOME LESSONS
WILL START WITH READING
Units for Year 7
English
Each term a newsletter will come home
with updates from English and
enrichment texts, plays, films for your
child to enjoy alongside their studies in
English.
Homework

banks.
 Learning spellings and independent reading
also form homework tasks.
Let Us Know…
 As a department we encourage you to keep in contact with us
throughout the year.
 Updates on your child’s enjoyment or worries around our
subject are always appreciated and acted upon.
Five Ways to Support Students in
English
1. Read and talk about books and reading.
2. Encourage purposeful editing and re-
drafting.
3. Help your child to identify spelling strategies
that work for them.
4. Visit the English pages on BBC Bitesize.
5. Play Scrabble, Boggle, Bananagrams!
