Media Language and Representation
1. Explain the importance of technological convergence for movie institutions and
audiences. Refer to The Jungle Book 1967 and The Jungle Book 2016 in your answer.

2. Analyse why The Big Issue magazine has used an intertextual approach on its front
cover.
[15 marks]
In your answer you must:
• Analyse the use of intertextuality to create meaning in the source
• make judgements and reach a conclusion about the advantages of this use of
intertextuality to The Big Issue magazine.

The sourceshows actor LiamNeeson, star of the film‘The Commuter’, released in January 2018,
which tells the story of an insurancesalesman/ex-policeman who gets caught up in a criminal
conspiracy duringhis daily commute home. Neeson is also famous for his lead rolein the filmtrilogy
‘Taken’ (2008, 2012,2014) which became a successful crimedrama TV series.The other figure is
rapper, author, producer and activistChuck D,leader of the rap group Public Enemy sincethe 1980s.
He now leads the supergroup Prophets of Rage, whose self-titled debut albumcame out in 2017.
Chuck D recently published his book,‘Chuck D Presents This Day In Rap and Hip-Hop History’.

Long Form Television Drama
In question 3, you will be rewarded for drawing together knowledge and
understanding from your full course of study, including different areas of the
theoretical framework and media contexts. Your answer should make reference to
both long form television dramas you have studied: one from List A and one from
List B.

3. Why do long form television dramas need to take into account both a national and
an international audience in their representations? In your answer you must:
a. consider the contexts in which long form television dramas are produced and
consumed
b. explain how media contexts may have influenced representations in the set
episodes of the two long form television dramas you have studied
c. make judgements and reach conclusions about the reasons for the
differences in representation between the two episodes.

4. Evaluate the relevance of Neale’s genre theory to long form television drama.
