and
Part 2: Depth Study The USA, 1919–1941.
In Part 1, Aspects of International Relations, choose one of the following sections:
Either Section A: The Inter-War Years, 1919–1939
Or Section B: The Cold War, 1945–1975
Or Section C: A New World? 1948–2005.
Then answer Question 1 and one other question from the section you have chosen.
In Part 2, Depth Study The USA, 1919–1941, answer Question 4 and one other
question.

An American cartoon, published in 1937. It shows President Roosevelt.
SOURCE D
A resident of Park Avenue, a wealthy area of New York, was sentenced to a term of
imprisonment for threatening to commit violence against President Roosevelt.
This act was significant as an example of the fanatical hatred of the President which
today obsesses thousands of men and women among the American upper class.
From an article, ‘They Hate Roosevelt,’ published in Harper’s Magazine in 1936. Harper’s was
an American pro-Democrat magazine read by the wealthier sections of the community.

(b) Explain why the US economy was already showing signs of weakness before the Wall Street
Crash. [6]
(c) ‘The main reason Roosevelt won the 1932 Presidential election was because he promised
change.’ How far do you agree with this statement? Explain your answer. [10]

In Part 1, Aspects of International Relations, choose one of the following sections: Either Section A: The Inter-War Years, 1919–1939 Or Section B: The Cold War, 1945–1975 Or Section C: A New World? 1948–2005. Then answer Question 1 and one other question from the section you have chosen. In Part 2, Depth Study The USA, 1919–1941, answer Question 4 and one other question. • Write the numbers of the questions you have answered in the box on the front of the answer booklet. • Read each question carefully. SOURCE D A resident of Park Avenue, a wealthy area of New York, was sentenced to a term of imprisonment for threatening to commit violence against President Roosevelt. This act was significant as an example of the fanatical hatred of the President which today obsesses thousands of men and women among the American upper class. From an article, ‘They Hate Roosevelt,’ published in Harper’s Magazine in 1936. Harper’s was an American pro-Democrat magazine read by the wealthier sections of the community.

[4] (b) Explain why the US economy was already showing signs of weakness before the Wall Street Crash.
