The documentary also includes a lot of footage and information about the music industry past and present and how Kenny’s music is still loved by some to this day. - 4. Narrative Structure • The documentary begins with a short overview of Kenny Rogers’ life story and career. This includes looking back at his childhood, how he was first introduced to music, when he began his music career, etc. • Open ending – His career and life is still ongoing, portraying he has a future which he mentions he still wants to keep having ‘success’ and trying different things to improve his fantastic life story. • Single Stranded – The full documentary is completely based on Kenny and everything included is based of and around him and his career. • Circular – Started at a present day and ended at present day.

Camerawork • Direct Address (Looking and talking towards camera (Interviews). • Medium Close ups which show the facial expression of interviewee’s and how they connect with Kenny Rogers. • Camera at eye level. • Zoom in/out, used frequently on the archived material and shows the audience where Kenny is at the time. • On multiple interviews, the interviewee’s look more to the side of the camera and don’t always give direct address as they are giving answers to the side of the camera. This creates the image that the interviewee’s are talking to an actual person beside the camera rather than giving direct address. • Long shot/Establishing shot of Las Vegas and Glastonbury (When he was performing).
- 6. Mise-en-Scene • Interviews take place in natural locations and homes which creates a casual feeling towards the documentary and interviews. The interviewee’s wear casual clothing and the background is relevant to the topic of discussion – music iconography. This is clear as in the background of the interviews, certain props are existent, for example; piano behind female singer, music achievements/awards, juke box, record collection, etc. • Instruments • Archive Footage of concerts and live performance/backstage. • Newspaper clippings/photographs.

The narration links the topics together through giving knowledgeable information, example of exposition. • Background music – Kenny’s music appears in parts of the documentary which obviously relates to the documentary and theme. • Diegetic sounds from live performances/videos. • Diegetic sound from interviews and observational footage.

Editing • Cross cuts are consistent throughout the documentary, specifically between interviews using archive footage which helps anchor meaning. • Flashing light transition – topic of success in his best career moments. • Cutaways – Interest viewer, keeps the documentary fast paced and keeps the viewer involved and giving information consistently. • Straight cut transitions. • Interviewer’s questions are cut out so that it feels as though the interviewee is talking freely and makes the interview run smoother.
