The Hunger Games?
Now you have finished
studying teenage stereotypes
and looked at how teenagers
are represented in the film
The Hunger Games, you are
going to sit your end of unit
assessment.
Your assessment will be a
written exam. You will be
given two hours to complete
your assessment during your
lessons. It is worth 60 marks.

You will have your textual analysis notes to refer to in the test. The
work you did at the beginning of the course on representation will
also help you to write a good answer.
You will be given an exam question paper and an assessment
booklet similar to the one you use in English assessments to write
your answer.
You will be tested on:
• Your knowledge of the Action Adventure Film Genre
• Your knowledge of movie image terminology
• Your understanding of stereotypes and media representation
• Your analysis and interpretation of the text
• Your own personal interaction with the message behind the film

Drama The Avengers.

You'll be asked questions about historical print newspaper The
Observer and contemporary news website The Observer online,
including the use of social media.

Creating Media You'll have to create media products in response to a brief for a
target audience. You will use your knowledge of Media Language
and Representation to construct meaning for Media Audiences.

This is the section
of the exam!
After the assessments, your teacher will provide you with
a feedback sheet to tag into your book.
You will complete a DIRT activity based on the Next
Steps on the feedback sheet. Your assessment will then
go into a media assessment folder. You will look at this
again ahead of sitting the real exam to revise your key
targets to improve.
Record your result on the Tracker in the front of your
exercise book so you know how you are doing in this
subject. Make sure you have made a record of your target
grade on this Tracker too.

Year 9 textual analysis assessment

  • 1. How are teenagers represented in the action adventure film The Hunger Games? Now you have finished studying teenage stereotypes and looked at how teenagers are represented in the film The Hunger Games, you are going to sit your end of unit assessment. Your assessment will be a written exam. You will be given two hours to complete your assessment during your lessons. It is worth 60 marks. Year9GCSEMediaAssessment
  • 2. You will have your textual analysis notes to refer to in the test. The work you did at the beginning of the course on representation will also help you to write a good answer. You will be given an exam question paper and an assessment booklet similar to the one you use in English assessments to write your answer. You will be tested on: • Your knowledge of the Action Adventure Film Genre • Your knowledge of movie image terminology • Your understanding of stereotypes and media representation • Your analysis and interpretation of the text • Your own personal interaction with the message behind the film Year10GCSEMediaAssessmentYear9GCSEMediaAssessment
  • 3. You can see which assessment this is in relation to your GCSE course. Paper One, Section A tests your textual analysis skills and your understanding of Media Representation. It will give you and your teachers a clear indication of how you might perform in the real examination at the end of the course. Good luck! Year10GCSEMediaAssessment Exam Paper What's on it Media Theoretical Framework Timing Marks (and % of GCSE) Paper 1 Television and Promoting Media (Cuffs, The Avengers and The Lego Movie) Section A: Television You'll be given an extract from the contemporary TV Crime Drama Cuffs which you'll be expected to watch and analyse. You will then answer questions based on the programme about movie image techniques, TV Crime Drama conventions and Representation. You will then answer questions based on the historic TV Crime Drama The Avengers. Media Language Media Audiences Media Representation Media Industries Social, cultural and historical contexts 1hr 45mins (including 30 mins viewing time) 70 marks (35%) Section B: Promoting Media You'll answer questions about advertising and marketing based on The Lego Movie and how it appeals to the family Target Audience. Media Audiences Media Representation Media Industries Social and cultural contexts Paper 2 Music and The News (music video and The Observer historic and contemporary online) Section A: Music You'll be asked questions based on two music videos and radio (The Live Lounge, BBC Radio One). You'll also have to answer questions based on music magazine MOJO. Media Language Media Audiences Media Representation Media Industries Social and cultural contexts 1hr 15mins 70 marks (35%) Section B: The News You'll be asked questions about historical print newspaper The Observer and contemporary news website The Observer online, including the use of social media. Media Language Media Audiences Media Representation Media Industries Social, cultural, political and historical contexts Creating Media You'll have to create media products in response to a brief for a target audience. You will use your knowledge of Media Language and Representation to construct meaning for Media Audiences. The brief will focus on one of the following areas: Magazines, Television, Music Video or Online, social and participatory media Media Language Media Audiences Media Representation Non-exam assessment 30 marks (30%) Year9GCSEMediaAssessment This is the section of the exam!
  • 4. After the assessments, your teacher will provide you with a feedback sheet to tag into your book. You will complete a DIRT activity based on the Next Steps on the feedback sheet. Your assessment will then go into a media assessment folder. You will look at this again ahead of sitting the real exam to revise your key targets to improve. Record your result on the Tracker in the front of your exercise book so you know how you are doing in this subject. Make sure you have made a record of your target grade on this Tracker too.
