STARTER: 
 Write down the meaning of the word genre in your own words: 
Genre, in film, means a type or category of a film 
 Write down the meaning of the word genre covnentions in your own 
words: 
Genre conventions are the key things needed in a 
certain type of genre.
MAIN TASK: Annotate this film poster to show 3-5 conventions of the 
horror genre that have been used 
Creepy old house 
Eerie 
The shadows can signify supernatural 
beings or creatures 
The colour red represents 
blood and suggests 
violence and death
Extension 1: find another horror film poster to annotate. Copy and paste 
the image below 
Tense facial expressions 
The shadows along the edges and 
corners can signify the unknown. 
The body language indicates there is something 
shocking or unbelievable.
Extension 2: now do the same for a film poster from another genre 
The weapon in his hand 
represents the violence that 
occurs in action films. 
The red dot in the center of his 
sunglasses signifies blood which 
then links to gun in his hand that 
indicates violence 
Facial expression is very serious 
which can signify the importance 
of defeating the villain

Lesson 4 Genre Key Words  Genre  Conventions L/Os: By the end of the lesson… You Must – identify genre conventions used in a horror film poster (Main Task) You Should – compare this to another horror film poster (Extension 1) Amazing If – compare this to a film poster from another genre (extension 2) STARTER:  Write down the meaning of the word genre in your own words: Genre, in film, means a type or category of a film  Write down the meaning of the word genre covnentions in your own words: Genre conventions are the key things needed in a certain type of genre.
  • 2. MAIN TASK: Annotate this film poster to show 3-5 conventions of the horror genre that have been used Creepy old house Eerie The shadows can signify supernatural beings or creatures The colour red represents blood and suggests violence and death
  • 3. Extension 1: find another horror film poster to annotate. Copy and paste the image below Tense facial expressions The shadows along the edges and corners can signify the unknown. The body language indicates there is something shocking or unbelievable.
  • 4. Extension 2: now do the same for a film poster from another genre The weapon in his hand represents the violence that occurs in action films. The red dot in the center of his sunglasses signifies blood which then links to gun in his hand that indicates violence Facial expression is very serious which can signify the importance of defeating the villain
