The document discusses magazine cover designs for film magazines. It describes how the masthead of EMPIRE magazine uses blood red to suggest a gory or violent film theme. Details are given without revealing the full storyline. Color schemes and words like "Kick ass" are used to attract readers and promote films. Large images of popular actors help readers identify the film genre. Main headlines stand out in different colors and larger text to highlight the primary story. Consistent house styles and bold mastheads catch the reader's attention. Previous student covers for Empire and Total Film magazines effectively use horror conventions like blood and forest settings to relate to their genres.

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

2. EMPIRE – the masthead of the
magazine is created to look like blood,
which could fit in with my film trailer as
it could be gory or to do with weapons
or death. I could use this effect on my
film poster or magazine front cover as it
gives away little details of the film but
not too much that you get the whole
storyline. The colour scheme is colours
used comic magazines which suggest
the film is related to superheroes or
comic strips. The main cover line ‘Kick
ass’ is set out as the words have been
kicked on to the page, this shows action
and violence is included in this film.
Words such as ‘new’, ‘favourite’, and
‘brilliant’ are used to attract the reader
to buy the magazine to read how good
the film is and persuade them to go and
see it.
3. EMPIRE - The film strip effect at the bottom
of the magazine cover looks professional as
it is showing action shots of other movies.
The headline of Sherlock Holmes links in
with the colour scheme of the image. The
colours mostly used are grey and white, this
may suggest the film is old or that the actor is
smart, or even that technology or weapons
could be involved. The large image takes up
the majority of the front cover as the image
will most likely be of a popular actress or
actor as this lets the audience know what
type of genre the film is. The main cover line
uses outstanding text. It keeps a consistent
house style with the different colours of the
words and the text is also be larger than the
others as this shows it is the main story of
the magazine and how important it is than
any of the other stories. The masthead line is
big and bold to catch the reader’s attention;
the colours are used simply yet catching. The
masthead can also be covered by the image
as the magazine is so popular that buyers
will be able to work out what brand it is.
4. Previous student’s Empire Front
Cover – they have used the
colour scheme of red as this
relates to danger, death, and
blood. The subheadings such
as “TOP 10 Halloween must
sees” link to the genre of the
magazine as they are to do with
horror and spookiness. The
image consists of a typical horror
film location and the character
seems as he is trying to escape
the forest and is reaching out to
the audience for their help. As
the character is in a low position
he looks helpless and scared.
5. Previous student's Total Film
Front Cover – The colour
scheme red and white contrasts
against the black and white
background. The main headline
is used to look like blood
splattered on the page, this links
to the genre of the magazine as
it to do with horror and the
typical conventions are blood,
danger, and weapons. The
blood on the character however
does not look as realistic as it
possibly could. The location of
the forest is used again which
shows that it is a typical location
used in horror films.
