There are three main types of media access methods for sharing a transmission medium: contention, token passing, and demand priority. Contention methods like CSMA/CD and CSMA/CA use carrier sensing and collisions to determine when nodes can transmit. Token passing like IEEE 802.5 uses a token that is passed between nodes to determine which node has permission to transmit. Demand priority prioritizes different data types and gives precedence to higher priority data if contention occurs at hubs.

5 IEEE standards
The IEEE 802 is a family of IEEE standards dealing with Local Area Networks and Metropolitan Area Networks. The IEEE 802 family of standards is maintained by the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee (LMSC).
The most widely used standards are for the Bridging and Virtual Bridged LANs (802.1), Ethernet family (802.3), Token Ring (802.5) and Wireless LAN (802.11).
Switch
A network switch connects devices on a computer network by receiving and forwarding data packets to their destination. It provides connection points for end users into the enterprise network and controls information flow within the local area network (LAN) using MAC addresses. There are two main types of switches: modular switches which provide flexibility through expansion modules, and fixed-configuration switches which include unmanaged, managed, and smart switches of varying capabilities and costs. A switch works at the data link layer to inspect packet headers, maintain a MAC address table mapping devices to ports, and forward packets only to the proper destination port to minimize traffic.
Error control
Error control techniques allow for detection and correction of errors during data transmission. Error control is implemented at the data link layer using automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocols like stop-and-wait and sliding window. Stop-and-wait involves transmitting a single frame and waiting for an acknowledgment before sending the next frame. Sliding window protocols allow multiple unacknowledged frames to be transmitted by using frame numbers and acknowledging receipt of frames. These protocols detect errors when frames are received out of sequence and trigger retransmission of lost frames.

We recently hosted the much-anticipated Community Skill Builders Workshop during our June online meeting. This event was a culmination of six months of listening to your feedback and crafting solutions to better support your PMI journey. Here’s a look back at what happened and the exciting developments that emerged from our collaborative efforts.
A Gathering of Minds
We were thrilled to see a diverse group of attendees, including local certified PMI trainers and both new and experienced members eager to contribute their perspectives. The workshop was structured into three dynamic discussion sessions, each led by our dedicated membership advocates.

The insights and feedback gathered from these discussions were invaluable. Here are some of the key takeaways and the steps we are taking to address them:
• Enhanced Resource Accessibility: We are working on a new, user-friendly resource page that will make it easier for members to access training materials and real-world application guides.

- 5. MEDIA ACCESS METHODS Demand Priority. Demand priority is an access method used with the new 100Mbps 100VG-AnyLAN standard. Although demand priority is officially considered a contention-based access method, demand priority is considerably different from the basic CSMA/CD Ethernet. In demand priority, network nodes are connected to hubs, and those hubs are connected to other hubs. Contention, therefore, occurs at the hub. (100VG-AnyLAN cables can actually send and receive data at the same time.) Demand priority provides a mechanism for prioritizing data types. If contention occurs, data with a higher priority takes precedence.
