Communication is a process with seven elements: a source idea, message, encoding, channel, receiver, decoding, and feedback. There are several key characteristics of effective communication including clarity, precision, avoiding repetition, maintaining logical linkages, and knowing your audience. The communication process involves six steps - ideation, encoding, transmission, receiving, decoding, and response or feedback. Effective nurse managers must be aware of communication techniques to ensure the effective management of their units.
