 Introduction
 Classification of mckenzie exercise
Introduction
 Robin McKenzie developed the method in the late 50s.
 In 1981 he launched the concept which he called
Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) - a system
encompassing assessment (evaluation), diagnosis and
treatment for the spine and extremities.
What is mckenzie exercise??
 The McKenzie method (also known as MDT =
Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy) is a
comprehensive method of care primarily used in
physical therapy.
 The goal of McKenzie Method is to centralize the pain
or move the pain from the leg into the low back.
Classificaton of
mckenzie
therapy
Postural
syndrome
Dysfunction
syndrome
Derangement
syndrome
Postural syndrome
 is the result of prolonged positions or postures that
can affect muscles, tendons, or joint surfaces. Pain may
be local and reproducible when end range positions,
such as slouching, are maintained for sustained
periods of time.
Dysfunction syndrome
 Implies some sort of adaptive shortening, scarring or
adherence of connective tissue causing discomfort. A
dysfunction may be intermittent or chronic, but its
hallmark is a consistent movement loss and pain at the
end range of movement. When the patient moves
away from end range their pain is decreased.
Derangement syndrome
 is the most common syndrome of the three. Certain
movements and particular movement patterns can
cause more sensitivity. Such as a flexion or extension,
the symptoms (low back pain) become either more
central (just in the low back) or less intense.
Back pain
 Cause of bak pain
1)bad posture
-sitting long time
-long time bending movement
-lifting heavy loads
-lying down in position of strain
-prolonged standing
2)anatomical(scitica)
Bad Sitting
posture
Poor posture Muscle tired Lordosis lose
Long slouched
sitting
position
Distored
disc(change
disc shape)
Band backward 5 to 6 times
Walk around few min.(reduce pressure within disc and relieve
stress tissue)
1)Use proper chair for sitting and lumbar roll
2)Lifting loads = avoids more than 15 kg.
3)Relaxing after vigorous activity
4)Avoid prolonged standing work
5)Use lumbar night roll at during sleep and bed are soft ,firm
6)before coughing and sneezing time body moves backward
3 effects are main mark
1)Symptoms are disappear within 1 to 4 week
2)Pain increase or decrease
3)Pain location change
General mckenzie back exercise is total 7.
1)The first four exercise is also called as extension exercise
2)The last three exercise is called as flexion exrcise
Normally exercise time is 6 to 8 times/day
Also known as first aid exercise
For as specially acute back pain
Exercise time=6 to 8 times/day
Pain is increase
Also called as sphinx
Exercise time=6 to 8 times/day
“pressure on,pressure off”
Also called as cobra
Exercise time Is 6 to 8 times/day
Main tool prevent lower back problem
6 to 8 repetion
includes in 1 session
3 to 4 times
session/daiy
5 to 6 rep. in 1 session
3 to 4 times/day
7 time in 1 session
3 to 4 session/day
Use aspirin and nsaids drug for pain relief(ibuprofen)
Avoid flexion
Staring with exercise 1 to 3 after 4 if pain is not reduced within 2 week
Than applies exercise 5 to 7(distoration)
1)Hip pain
2)Pregnancy
3)Athletics
4)osteoporosis
1)Bed rest
2)Acupunture
3)Chiropractic
4)electrotherapy
1)Mckenzie 7 step to pain free life
