This document discusses UNIDO's work on refrigeration and compliance with the Montreal Protocol. It summarizes that: 1) UNIDO assists developing countries comply with the Montreal Protocol through HCFC phase-out plans and projects worth $250 million in 78 countries. 2) Attention has expanded to greenhouse gases like HFCs which have high global warming potential and are rapidly increasing with air conditioning/refrigeration growth. 3) UNIDO is working on demonstration projects to introduce low-GWP alternatives through training, improved supply chains, and raising awareness, and has piloted natural refrigerant projects in Vietnam cold stores.

2. UNIDO’s Montreal Protocol Programme
• UNIDO assists developing countries to be in compliance with
the Montreal Protocol through the planning, development and
implementation of HCFC phase-out plans, institutional
strengthening and demonstration projects
• More than 250 ongoing projects in 78 countries in 9 sectors in
the total value of USD 250 million

3. The Montreal Protocol and Latest Trends
• With concerns over climate change, attention has been expanded to
greenhouse gases and the global warming potential (GWP) of refrigerants
• Rapidly multiplying air-conditioning and refrigeration installations
especially in developing countries  rapid growth in the volume of
Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) being used (GWPs 2,000-4,000 times the
GWP of CO2)

Reducing Greenhouse Gas and ODS Emissions through Technology Transfer
In Industrial Refrigeration in Viet Nam
UNIDO’s Experience:
• Project promotes policy and regulatory
support for introducing new technologies,
pilot demonstrations in cold storages and
awareness raising.
• Project installed 25 R-290 uniblock units in 9
cold stores that used R-22, as pilot
demonstrations.
• Partial results demonstrate much better
energy efficiency and performance of new
units.
• Next steps: replication of pilots  testing the
interest of the Vietnamese market after the
success of pilots.
• Scaling up the project for the entire food
cold chain (including transport refrigeration).
