on the commercial sector
3. Latest Technologies in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning - XVI European Conference Milano, 12th - 13th June 2015
Impact of (EU) No 517/2014 on HFCs
• 2018 there will be a 37% reduction in HFC supplies (coincides with additional pre-
charged controls which will add 10% extra demand) and is 2 years before service ban
• 2021 there will be a 55% reduction in HFC supplies
• Burden on sectors is even greater when considering non-exempt uses only

Natural refrigerant
substitutes
• By 2030 impacts of (EU) No 517/2014 will drop average
GWP of HFCs in EU by 79% (GWP <400)
• This will create new opportunities for the market growth
of natural solutions
CO2= GWP 1
Ammonia= GWP 0
Hydrocarbons= GWP 3-20

EIA’s Chilling Facts Campaign
7. Latest Technologies in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning - XVI European Conference Milano, 12th - 13th June 2015
• Key topics: Leakage, roll out of HFC-free technology, energy
efficiency , action in emerging markets
• In 2008 (launch) only 14 UK stores running on HFC-free cooling
• In 2014 we surveyed retailers reveal almost 1,900 stores are
using natural refrigerants
• Translated into Mandarin, French, Spanish, German

Growth of natural refrigerants
in the commercial sector
• Not just HFC-cascade systems- number of HFC-free
systems is growing too!
• Latest survey results show almost 1,150 stores
survey-wide are using HFC-free refrigeration.
• EIA’s findings are just the tip of the iceberg- it is
estimated that worldwide, there are over 5,000
stores using CO2 transcritical and cascade systems
(shecco, 2014)
9. Latest Technologies in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning - XVI European Conference Milano, 12th - 13th June 2015
•2013 study by manufacturers Carel, showed CO2 parallel compression systems
were able to perform on a par with an R-134A/CO2 cascade system in 18⁰C in
Palermo
•In 2014, Carrefour reported that its Valencia store had achieved 13% annual
energy efficiency gains, equating to a 47% reduction in utility bills
Creating more ubiquitous solutions

Growth in hydrocarbon
& ammonia solutions
It’s not all about CO2!
•Hydrocarbon technology is being widely used by The
Co-operative UK, Waitrose and in Tesco stores in
Thailand and Hungary.
•Lidl is testing new plug-in hydrocarbon chillers with a
planned European-wide roll out from 2015
•Back of house, 95% of surveyed retailers are now using
natural refrigerants to cool distribution centres, with
most using ammonia

Conclusions
•(EU) No 517/2014 will significantly reduce the availability of HFCs
to just 21% of 2014’s levels, and could lead to price increases of
these refrigerants
•Phase-down steps will be fast-acting. It pays to act now!
•Adopting naturally refrigerated systems as a way of future-
proofing businesses is growing in popularity, not just in Europe,
but worldwide as well
•CO2 technology is becoming more and more universal, and
increasingly energy efficient
•Its time to step off the chemical treadmill!
