The term “maxim of teaching” refers to a general
principle or guideline that is followed in teaching
to help achieve effective learning outcome.
These maxims provide a framework for teachers to
plan and implement lessons that are effective and
engaging for students.

The features of good teaching are the qualities and
characteristics that define effective teaching
practices.
These features are essential for creating a positive
and supportive learning environment that fosters
student success.

Features of Teaching
The following are some important features of teaching:
Good teaching is stimulating
Not a matter of pouring in, but of
drawing out
Not a passive act, but an active process
Mature skill
Good teaching is well-planned
A means of adjustment
Organization of learning
Suggestive and cooperative
Good teaching is democratic

Planning (Phases)of Teaching
Planning is the process of creating a roadmap for
teaching and learning that defines the goals,
content, and methods to be used in the
classroom.
Effective planning is essential for creating a well-
structured and engaging learning experience that
supports student success
General Methods of Teaching (GMT)
I- Pre-Active Phaseof Teaching
M. Lawrence Stolurow names it the Pre-Tutorial phase of teaching. The following
operations are carried out at the planning stage.
Formulation of Instructional Objectives (in the light of pupil entry
behavior)
Taking decision about the content or subject matter (to be taught)
Sequencing elements of the content or subject matter
Deciding teaching strategies to be adopted
Distributing the teaching strategies
General Methods of Teaching (GMT)
II- Interactive Phase
of Teaching
 This phase refers to the execution of the plan made during the pre-
active phase. This is actual classroom teaching.
 In this phase, the teacher gives students the learning experiences
through some suitable modes. In this phase, teachers give learners a
pre-determined environment.
 The teacher interacts with students so that desired changes can be
brought in the learner. So learning is directed in pre-determined
directions to achieve pre-determined goals.

II- Interactive Phase
of Teaching
This phase of teaching includes all those activities which a teacher uses after entering the
classroom, includes actual teaching done in the classroom. Operations of teaching at
interactive phase:
 Setting up the Class
 Knowing the Learners
 Start teaching
General Methods of Teaching (GMT)
III - Post- Active Phase of Teaching
It is the evaluation phase of teaching. It arises when the teacher has left the class and tries to
have a look back into what happened in the class. This phase is concerned with the following
activities.
 Evaluation Activities:
 Summing up teaching tasks

  • 9. General Methods of Teaching (GMT) I- Pre-Active Phaseof Teaching M. Lawrence Stolurow names it the Pre-Tutorial phase of teaching. The following operations are carried out at the planning stage. Formulation of Instructional Objectives (in the light of pupil entry behavior) Taking decision about the content or subject matter (to be taught) Sequencing elements of the content or subject matter Deciding teaching strategies to be adopted Distributing the teaching strategies
  • 10. General Methods of Teaching (GMT) II- Interactive Phase of Teaching  This phase refers to the execution of the plan made during the pre- active phase. This is actual classroom teaching.  In this phase, the teacher gives students the learning experiences through some suitable modes. In this phase, teachers give learners a pre-determined environment.  The teacher interacts with students so that desired changes can be brought in the learner. So learning is directed in pre-determined directions to achieve pre-determined goals.
