The information age took us by storm and the mobile revolution is still in full effect – yet we already stand on the brink of the next paradigm shift: the seamless connection of information and personal devices. Imagine a world where you have the possibility of giving your devices context by simply holding them close to a tiny chip. Things like sharing your WiFi credentials or telling your mobile phone that you are going to bed and it should mute and dim itself and also set the alarm clock to 7am. All with one simple touch — Welcome to the world of Near Field Communication. This talk focuses on the amazing possibilities of NFC in everyday use. A variety of actual and (once) futuristic use cases will illustrate how NFC can enrich our experiences with technology and how this relates to our profession of User Experience Design and our role in shaping the future.
Near Field Communication (NFC) technology makes life easier and more convenient for consumers around the world by making it simpler to make transactions, exchange digital content, and connect electronic devices with a touch.

NFC: Shaping the Future of the Connected Customer ExperienceNFC Forum
This presentation was delivered March 8, 2017 at RETAILTECH JAPAN by Koichi Tagawa, Chairman, NFC Forum, Sony.
Technology is reshaping the face and function of the traditional brick-and-mortar store, forever changing shopping as we know it. NFC-enabled mobile payments and tags are the latest must-have accessories. Forward-thinking retailers are pushing the boundaries to further engage shoppers—often with nothing more than a simple touch, tap, or swipe. NFC, the technology link between the physical and digital world, is helping build a stronger, more meaningful—and therefore more profitable—relationships with customers. NFC-enabled industries, including transport, automotive and IoT, are opening new doors for retailers. All with a simple tap, consumers can make NFC-enabled transactions using a wearable, their car dashboard, or in an NFC-enabled train station. This presentation will highlight how the growth of NFC is leading to “retail anywhere” NFC-enabled applications. The presentation will spotlight NFC use cases in the Internet of Things, Transportation, Automotive markets and examine the future of NFC-based product innovation.

What is a Trusted Service Manager?
A Trusted Service Manager (TSM) plays a vital role in the Near Field Communication (NFC) ecosystem.
A TSM acts as a trusted middle- man within the deployment of mobile payments:
1. Coordinating technical and business relationships of multiple stakeholders: mobile network operators (MNO), banks and other service providers (SP).
2. Securely installing and personalizing applications on the Secure Element (SE).
3. Handling banking and mobile security and securing consumer information.
4. Performing lifecycle management tasks for installed applications.
5. Securely generating, managing and distributing cryptographic keys
TSM models
An SP communicates with an MNO to add an application on an NFC device.
But the reality is more complex.
Utopian NFC ecosystem with one TSM.
Different organisation see themselves as TSM and no single organisation is trusted by everyone.
One TSM creates ownership issues regarding relationships and data.
Current NFC ecosystem: Root TSM and SP TSM model
A Root TSM - manages the Root Security Domain (SD) on the NFC device and its keys. - informs SP TSMs of key events on applications. - interacts with the phone. - interacts with service provider TSMs.
An SP TSM - provisions, manages, loads and personalises applications into the SD on behalf of SPs. - manages their own secure environment. - interacts with the phone to install and personalise services. - interacts with Root TSMs to communicate state changes of applications.
Why TSM?
1. Multiple markets becoming part of the mobile ecosystem are required to collaborate.
2. TSMs are their Single Point of Contact.
3. Markets such as payments, transit and access control need to cooperate.
4. TSMs allow stakeholders to effectively communicate and handle transactions securely with each other.
Becoming a TSM?
Service providers can keep control of their customers by becoming their own TSM.
This ensures flexibility and scalability to meet future market demands.

Hacking Tizen : The OS of Everything - Nullcon Goa 2015Ajin Abraham
Tizen is an operating system which is built to run on various kinds of devices. Tizen OS defines following profiles based on the devices types supported.
Tizen IVI (in-vehicle infotainment)
Tizen Mobile
Tizen TV, and
Tizen Wearable
Samsung's first Tizen-based devices are set to be launched in India in Nov 2014. This paper presents the research outcome on the security analysis of Tizen OS. The paper begins with a quick introduction to Tizen architecture which explains the various components of Tizen OS. This will be followed by Tizen's security model, where Application Sandboxing and Resource Access Control powered by Smack will be explained.
The vulnerabilities in Tizen identified during the research and responsibly disclosed to Tizen community will be discussed. This includes issues like Tizen WebKit2 Address spoofing and content injection, Buffer Overflows, Issues in Memory Protection like ASLR and DEP, Injecting SSL Certificate into Trusted Zone, (Shellshock) CVE-2014-6271 etc. Applications in Tizen can be written in HTML5/JS/CSS or natively using C/C++. Overview of pentesting Tizen application will be presented along with some of the issues impacting the security of Tizen application. There will be comparisons made to Android application, and how these security issues differ with Tizen.
For eg: Security issues with inter application communication with custom URL schemes or intent broadcasting in Android as opposed to using MessagePort API in Tizen. Issues with Webview & JavaScript Bridge in Android compared to how the web to native communication is handled with Tizen etc.
Tizen is late to enter into the market as compared to Android or iOS, which gives it the benefit of learning from the mistakes impacting the security of mobile OS, and fixing these issues right in the Security Architecture. To conclude, a verdict would be provided by the speaker on how much Tizen has achieved with regard to making this mobile OS a secure one.

“Mobile Point-Of-Sale is not just for micro merchants,” says David Gudjonsson, CEO and Co-founder of Handpoint. There has been tremendous adoption of mPOS by micro-merchants, but security compliance and IT integration have created cost and complexity barriers for larger merchants. Our system has been designed from the ground up to overcome these challenges; the combination of our API and P2PE security significantly reduces the time and cost it takes for merchants to introduce Chip and PIN payments with mobile devices.”

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

9. Lessons learned…
SDK White Label App works
A great reference app for those
looking to integrate
SDK was easy to customise, e.g. we
used custom data fields on the SIM
cardlet.
We built it (twice) and it works – you
could too!
Editor's Notes
Orange Cash began development in 2012: phased approach, beginning with account management before moving on to NFC payments. App released on Android and iPhone (+ built for BlackBerry, but not released).
Product evolved to become EE Cash on Tap with total app re-write for new EE brand and to include payments.
Penrillian involved in building the mobile apps and building the app server between the apps and the PPS backend (authentication, streamlining data [SOAP -> JSON], push capability, forced upgrade).
Approached by MasterCard to build a mobile payment app on BlackBerry (originally, as it was their company-issued device) and Android. Motivation was to help prove the capabilities of their newly created SDK and evangelise mobile payments within MasterCard. Target audience was ~250 at MasterCard Belgian HQ, Waterloo. Project required collaboration between:
MasterCard (product owner)
PrePay Solutions (issuer, processor)
Oberthur (SIM personalisation and cardlet)
Mobistar (SIM/Network provider)
Penrillian (App developers)

MMPP UI SDK is free to use but you have to be licensed. App and SDK can be used in any way desired – all source code available.
Quickest route to market: Integrate existing MasterCard White Label with Penrillian-developed account management code.
In order to run the WL app, all that was needed was persoed SIM with known AID. SIMs were ‘hand-printed’ by Oberthur so no need to set up an OTA provisioning process.
Penrillian managed all aspects of software build, including bespoke amendments to the MasterCard White Label – it wasn’t perfect!
MasterCard SDK handles payments.
Penrillian code manages account behind the payments:
Add funding source
Load card
View balance and transactions history
App security for authentication, PIN management, and inactivity.
App ready to be deployed to initial MasterCard trial users in Belgium.
