Metaphors And The Natural World
Whether we know it or not, we make use of metaphors daily in many ways to help us make sense of
the world. A metaphor is defined as a figure of speech that identifies an object or an idea that is similar
to an unrelated thing. The use of metaphors and the language that they portray help to create new
insight into the universe. They not only help classify the natural world, and help interpret the scientific
world, but they also set outlooks on individuals culture and society; however, some may argue that
metaphors are an impractical use of our language that only complicate things that can instead be stated
clearer. Our perspectives and the way we think are directly linked to how we talk and communicate in
in the natural world and how we are viwed by society. This is explained further in detailed in
Metaphors We Live By, because it clearly shows how individuals shape their perspectives based on
their experiences in society: In most of the little things we do every day, we simply think and act more
or less automatically along certain lines, (Lackoff Johnson 3). This furthers proves how much
metaphors can affect the way we think and the way we see the world from what we undergo and
experience in our life it is what gives us an opinion on certain matters of race, gender, religion, etc. We
all think and act according to how we interact with our society and it is the power of metaphors that
help guide and change one s beliefs to help portray our own perspective for others.

Power Relation Within The Household
power relation within the household. According to Kottegoda (2006) majority of the migrant women
practiced their control over earnings by sending part of the earnings to a bank account on their own
name to ensure that no one else can handle it.
The 16% successful return entrepreneurs who were depicted in Handapangoda (2012) survey have
been maintaining their business ventures by investing the cash savings which were initiated during
their stay in Middle East. For most migrants out of this 16%, the income earned through the business
was the only income for the family, thus the contribution served as the de facto breadwinner role .
Improved role of decision making
Decision making power can be considered as the agency of making choices as far as empowerment
concepts considered (Kabeer, 1999). For the purpose of this study decision making is categorised as
financial decision making and non financial decision making within the house hold level. Decisions
such as house hold resource allocation and spending are financial while decisions such as child care,
domestic matters and social concerns are considered non financial.
Compared to the less influential power of decision making power before migration, 90% of migrant
women reported improved level of decision making power during their stay (Handapangoda, 2012).
This is basically related to the relatively greater financial contribution of them to the household
income. It has opened wider opportunity and agency over house hold

The Ethic of the Community in Luke’s Gospel
For the sake of this study, Luke s Gospel plays an important role in establishing the identity of the
members of the community. Indeed, without Luke s Gospel our visual images of the Christian story
would be impoverished because Luke s Gospel [can be considered] the aesthetic teacher of Christian
senses in hearing and speech through story and song and in sight through the many artistic renderings
of his stories. Luke accomplishes this feat by using cultural conventions surrounding hospitality and
banqueting to illustrate such important facets of Jesus teaching as generosity to the poor, forgiveness
of sinners, humility rather than social power, and the priority given to the word of God.

6:13). Upon calling the disciples he proceeds to move down to a plain ( level place v. 17) and begins
an extended time of teaching. After moving through the Blessings and Woes (vv. 20 26, par. Matt. 5:2
12), Jesus institutes an ethic for his disciples. This ethic is characterized by love for enemies (vv. 27
36) not judging (v. 37 38), the first of which appears to be a combination of two of the antitheses
found in Matthew s account (Mt. 5:43 48, 38 42) with the golden rule serving as a hinge that connects
them. In this section Jesus establishes a society that is not necessarily its own nation or state, but
rather a community that forms its own sphere of life ... which lives in a different way and treats others
in a different way than is usual elsewhere in the world. ... It is not the violent structures of the powers
of this world which are to rule within it, but rather reconciliation and brotherhood.
27 28 Luke starts the section with a strong adversative (Alla, but ) to mark the transition from the
Blessings and Woes to this new ethic for his disciples. In using the alla, + uvmi/n structure Luke
stresses the audience of the teaching is intended to be his disciples, as uvmi/n is in the emphatic
position. The primary imperative is to love enemies and is supported with three subordinate
imperatives: Do good ..., bless ..., and pray. The imperatives to bless and pray for are practical
examples of how to love enemies which both explain what

Too Much to Bear in The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien
Too Much to Bear The things I carry are both figurative and literal. I carry a pen, a pencil, a textbook
or two, and paper. I carry memories, experiences, pain, guilt, cowardice, love and happiness. In the
novel The Things They Carried by Tim O Brien, O Brien centralizes on why people carry what they
do, physical or not. To be honest, I carry what I do because I must. If I don t carry that one textbook
that one day, I ll regret it. If I forget what it was like have my first icecream cone, what if felt like the
instant my mouth froze up and the inside of my head pounded so loudly I almost screamed, I will be
less of who I am today. What I carry defines me. In the novel, the tangible and intangible loads the
soldiers carry define them; such as Lt. Cross s who carry s a picture of and intangible feelings for
Martha. What the soldiers burdened themselves with was largely determined, emotionally or
physically, was by necessity. The tangible objects depicted in the book are especially relevant. The
author s style of writing is very elaborate only because he wants the readers to discern sympathy
towards the soldiers. The author tells us about the weight of the objects each of the soldiers carry to
supplement our overall total lasting impression. O Brien says in the first chapter, he recounts the literal
objects each soldier carried. As PFCs or Spec 4s, most of them were common grunts and carried the
standard M 16 gas operated assault rifle. The weapon weighed 7.5 pounds

Ideology Of Altered Images
Colter Sternhagen Professor Gilbertson Global Visual Culture 11 February 2016 Ideology of Images
Altered images have found a commonplace in all variations of todays s media. It seems rare anymore
that you find yourself looking at a totally original image presented in mainstream media. This is
because producers and advertisement companies know they can persuade their audience much more
effectively by digitally altering their images. And they have perfected the technique. The phenomenon
is an interesting one, and one that has dramatically affected lives in both good, and bad ways. Two
issues that are concerning in regards to an altered image has to do with one, the integrity of the
original image, and two, with how changing someones facial or body features in order to achieve a
look ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Slightly enhancing skin tone or eye color to boost someone s look is still more than what is needed to
capture a style or product, but is more or less morally acceptable. It becomes an issue when noses are
re shaped, lips are plumped up, moles and scars are removed, and body curves are given the hourglass
treatment. These altering s are melodramatic and fool societies eye, therefore make us believe that is
what those people or things actually look like. In turn, many people who consistently watch tv or use
internet are quite susceptible to insecurities of their personal image. They want to look that good, but
it s impossible. It s dead end and dangerous thinking. If the media were too use original images of
people (while still referring to them as beautiful and of good nature) then people in society who are
watching would feel less pressure to look a certain way, and be more concerned with looking the way
they feel comfortable and free. Leading to a lightened perspective on image, and a heavier focus on

Is Ebola Only Deadly To The Poorest
Is Ebola only deadly to the poorest?
The whole world is at edge knowing that Ebola is a very lethal virus and it is very tough to treat and
cure an infected person. But it has been seen that in countries were level of development is higher and
health care is easily reached this disease can be fought.
So far, every case of an American infected has ended happily, most recently Dallas nurse Amber
Vinson the second patient to contract Ebola in the US has been discharged from Emory Hospital,
Ebola free.
Cases of Patients being cured in America have become almost predictable. All of the Ebola patients
treated in the United States have so far survived. These exceed outcomes in Africa, where
approximately 70 percent of patients die.

Infection control
Protective clothing including masks, gloves, gowns and goggles should be worn when coming into
contact with an infected person. The US Centres for Disease Control (CDC) recommend that the
protective gear leaves no skin exposed. These measures should be carried out for those who may
handle objects contaminated by an infected person s body fluids. In 2014, the CDC began
recommending that medical personnel receive training on the proper suit up and removal of personal
protective equipment (PPE); in addition, a designated person, appropriately trained in biosafety,
should be watching each step of these procedures to ensure they are done correctly. The typical
training period for the use of such safety equipment lasted approximately 12 days in Sierra Leone.
The infected person should be in separated from other people. All equipment, medical waste, patient
waste and surfaces that may have come into contact with body fluids need to be disinfected. During
the 2014 outbreak, kits were put together to help families treat Ebola disease in their homes, which
include protective clothing as well as chlorine powder and other cleaning supplies. Education of those
who provide care in these techniques, and the establishment of such barrier separation supplies has
been a priority of Doctors without Borders.

Blood streams through the body through blood vessels (arteries, capillaries and veins). These blood
vessels pierce through tissue throughout the body, absorbing glucose, amino acids, vitamins and
minerals directly into the blood stream whilst in addition exerting wastes.
The Australian Red Cross Blood Service (ARCBS) collects around 1.4 million blood donations each
year. Healthy adults aged between the age of sixteen and seventy can donate blood. Donated blood is
normally divided into separate components; this is so that recipients who need blood can get the most
appropriate treatment. Numerous Other donations, made through the Australian Centre for Blood
Diseases, are used for medical research in order to develop new treatments for many medical
conditions, such as blood clots, heart attack, stroke and cancer. (Better Health Channel, 2014)
Donation blood approximately takes as little as ten minutes, but an individual is advised to allow at
least an hour for the whole process. During a standard donation, an individual will donate roughly
470ml of whole blood, which is approximately eight per cent of the average adult s blood volume.

Speech For A Introductory Speech On Procrastination
Introductory paragraph:
Hook: (I am sitting there) and I wonder about my homework then I say oh when I am going to be
presenting my speech and then I say oh I ran out of time.
Greeting: Good afternoon, judges, teachers, and fellow classmates
Introduction to topic: Today I will be talking about something horrible we have all done before. Today
I m going to share with you some statistics that I can t believe affect us all. According to the Brandon
Gaille website in the article about 17 lazy procrastination statistics, they said that 85 to 95 percent of
students in North America procrastinate and the number of chronic procrastinators has quadrupled
during the last thirty years?
What is procrastination?
I know some of you are sitting there wondering what procrastination is. Well, procrastination is the
action of putting off tasks that are planned to be done for tasks that are of lesser importance. So if you
think of it, you are actually trying to sabotage your success. There are actually two types of
procrastinators one is the situational procrastinator and the other is a chronic procrastinator. A
situational procrastinator usually procrastinates because of how they feel about a particular task
(usually because we don t like it). Chronic procrastinators procrastinate in almost every situation, and
that is the normal for them. So is procrastination laziness or an illness? Procrastination could be a
physiological illness if the person procrastinates because of

Integumentary System
B5 Summarize the major functions of the integumentary system and give examples on how this
system relates to at least two other organ systems.
The 5 Major functions of the skin:
1. Protection o The integumentary system protects the human body in two ways physically and
chemically.
 Physically, keratinized epithelial cells (outermost layer of skin cells) act as a tough waterproof
barrier. These keratinized cells are really good at protecting the body from water loss, mechanical and
chemical injury, and keeping bacterial cells out of the body.
 Chemically, a chemical barrier is formed by the production of acidic secretions by the sebaceous
(oil) glands. The acidic environment inhibits bacterial growth.
2. Thermoregulation o The integumentary system helps to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
 The various wastes secreted by the integumentary system are cellular metabolic wastes,
electrolytes, and excess water.
5. Synthesize Vitamin D3 o The integumentary system synthesizes vitamin D3 in the presence of
sunlight.
 In the presence of sunlight a sterol (7 Dehydrocholesterol) is converted to vitamin D3. Vitamin D3
is needed for our bones and teeth to grow and is important in making certain types of antibodies.
Vitamin D3 also plays an important role in the absorption of calcium for our bones.
Relation to Skeletal System
Skin protects the bones, but also synthesizes the vitamin D3 that bones need for normal calcium
absorption and deposit of bone (calcium) salts, which make bones hard.
Relation to Endocrine System
Androgens produced by the endocrine system activate the sebaceous glands and help regulate hair
growth; estrogen helps to maintain skin hydration.
3 Fun Facts
1. The thinnest skin is found on your eyelids 0.1mm thick, while the thickest skin is found on the
bottom of your foot 2 3mm thick.
2. Scar tissue lacks hair and sweat glands
3. Not so fun fact Skin Cancer is the most common form of cancer in the US.

Analysis Of Verses Upon The Burning Of Our House
Anne Bradstreet was and is a highly regarded Puritan poet of seventeenth century American literature.
She defied cultural expectations of women at the time and became the first accomplished woman poet
of the New World. As evident in her poetry, she was strictly loyal to God and her Puritan beliefs, but
she was not exempt from grief and doubt in the face of tragedy. Some, however, would argue that her
grief and doubt in response to those tragedies showed a stray from her strict Puritan belief system.
One controversial tragic event, in particular, that she wrote about exemplified her struggle between
earthly desires and heavenly truths: the blaze that overtook her family s home. Anne Bradstreet, in her
poem Verses upon the Burning of Our House, demonstrates the common internal conflict of Christians
as she battles between her Puritan theology and her innate human emotions in response to her
devastating house fire.
Anne was born in the early seventeenth century in England. She was privileged with an excellent
education because her father, Thomas Dudley, was a steward to a prominent figure. She married
Simon Bradstreet at just sixteen years of age while still residing in England. When Anne was still a
teenager, the Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Company made the decision to leave and settle
together in the New World, the Dudleys and Bradstreets journeyed with them. In contrast to the way
she was raised, the life of settlers proved to be difficult in the colony because of

Wang Lung s Changes In The Good Earth
The novel, The Good Earth, by Pearl S. Buck, takes place outside of a small village in China during
the early twentieth century. Women, during this time period, have little say in anything involving their
lives. They are expected to take care of the house, as well as tending to the children and men of the
family, whether it be the husband, his father, or brothers. Women possess the skills to provide for and
serve the family, and that is what they do. In this novel Wang Lung is a typical, poor farmer. He
spends his days tending to the fields and his father. When Wang Lung and O lan marry, he is pleased
that she models an adequate wife by doing what she is supposed to do and more. Lung s life changes

All O lan wants in life is a family, a home and love. After giving birth to her first son, she cannot wait
to return to the House of Hwang and show everyone. O lan knows down to the details how she wants
to return, meaning this is something she has been planning and it is meaningful to her. Growing up, O
lan experienced living on the streets and was a mistreated, abused slave in the House of Hwang, never
having a true home. To have a home where she can live freely with her own family must also be
significant to O lan. But love, of all things, is what O lan yearns for most. All her life, she is never
shown any true love, and even when married, she still does not receive the love she wishes for or
deserves. Wang Lung rarely shows his appreciation for O lan and does not think she is beautiful, yet
she still does all she can for him, in hope of getting any kind of love. As for the earth, its only
necessities are water, sunlight and people to work and tend to the crops. If the earth has water and
sunlight, it will flourish and produce crops. In order for those crops to thrive, they need people to tend
to them, but that is all. Although they may not need the same things, both O lan and the earth only

The research that is being conducted focuses largely on the electrical and chemical interactions and
relationships within organisms. The magnitude of the negative charges of cells are identified with an
in vivo dye which causes more negative areas to glow more brightly. What has been found is that
more negative areas in frogs essentially plot where certain features, in one case the eyes, are going to
develop. By manipulating an area on the tail slightly more negative, the frog developed with an eye on
its tail. Such a small alteration had such a significant outcome on the frog, which is an indication of
how powerful this research is. Chemical modification was also found to strongly influence the
developing embryos when a frog embryo was treated with Prilosec, a stomach acid relief drug, which
caused craniofacial defects as well as causing the organs to develop on opposite sides of the body.
Prilosec interfered with the movement of the ion set, potassium and hydrogen, which was enough to
impact patterning in the developing frog, resulting in defects. Research in the field has also been
applied to try and improve severed spinal cords. In these tests, the movement of nerves was controlled
by introducing a charge difference across the break in the spine. This caused nerves to move towards
the charge and from here they were able to heal. Although it was found that the nerves couldn t move
past the scar tissue, the experiment indicated that these techniques have to potential to be effectively
applied to developed individuals, which could mean a chance at recovery for those living with spinal

Why Are Hedgehogs Alive
Ever since we were younger we always thought that many things were alive but what made us think
that it was alive? For example, why are hedgehogs alive? One of the ways how hedgehogs are alive is
that they have a cellular structure and function, they reproduce, they use metabolism, they use
homeostasis, they have a long line of heredity, they have evolved, and they use interdependence.
Hedgehogs are mammals so they reproduce sexually and it usually takes 35 58 days for their baby to

Stressors In Stress Management
Identifying Your Stressors: Step One In Stress Management
We have all experienced some type of stress in our lives, whether we re aware of it or not. Everyone s
experience with it will be different and there will be a variety of reasons and causes for each
individual. While one inconvenience is minor to you it may be enough to send your friend running.
This is why it s important to understand your stressors. The first step in managing your stress is
understanding what it is that triggers it.
The Categories
Emotional
These internal stressors include anxieties and fears that you may have and come with a variety of
personality traits (like pessimism, distrust, and perfectionism). These types of stressors are unique to
individuals and can distort how they perceive others.
Work
We all experience pressure at work from the pressures to perform and meet deadlines, to working with
irritating colleagues and unpredictable bosses. Work can be a big cause of stress for many of us.
Social
This includes interactions with friends, dating, social engagements, and even speaking in public. Much
like emotional stressors something that has no impact on you may strike your friend hard and vice
versa.
Familial
Family is great, but stress can stem from unruly children, relationship problems, financial issues, and a
whole host of other reasons.
Change
Any type of change can be enough to trigger stress big life moments like moving home, starting a new

ECT as an Effective Treatment for Self Harm
ECT as an Effective Treatment for Self Harm in Extreme Cases of Mentally Unstable Patients who
Cannot Give Informed Consent There is much controversy in regards to how far a practitioner should
go to protect a patient s well being, whilst trying to adhere to their rights and consent of treatment
methods (Feldman, 1990, p. 261). The most ethical solution is to only resort to extreme methods of
treatments if the patient is clearly seen as not being mentally stable enough to provide the right
judgement call, and if they are in a life threatening situation in which they could potentially harm
themselves or others. In cases where patients are not mentally stable enough to give their consent,

Research by Kellner et al. has also shown how ETC can be effective for behavioural disorders, but in
this case, for severe depression. Kellner defends this treatment explaining that many controversies
have arose regarding ECT because of misrepresentations of it in the media and lack of knowledge of
the logistics of its mechanisms. Patient, Ms. A. , a 72 year old woman became seriously depressed and
was not responding to any psychotherapy or drugs pertaining to clinical depression. She was barely
able to function properly, and after a course of eight ECT sessions of unilateral ultrabrief pulse
treatments , her score on the Hamilton Depression Rating scale, ranked out of 24, went from 38 to 6.
She was soon able to continue her usual daily activities (Kellner, 2012, p. 1 2). Miss. A s results from
ETC showed that this method of treatment greatly improved her previously severe depression.
Depression can lead to attempts at suicide as well as self harming ones self, so extreme punitive
treatments are better to pursue than allowing the chance of a patient taking ones own life.(Feldman
1990, p. 263). It is emphasized that consent of patients that are legally incompetent for medical
decision making should have a legal guardian to decide for them (Kellner 2012, p. 5). Thus, ETC has

Kimbell describes a typical Sunday Vermonters spend down at the garage. He emphasizes the idea of

also mentions sighting a gun and trying to charge a battery in the hopes of painting a picture of rugged

The Flipped Classroom Model Of Instruction
Abstract
The flipped classroom model is the brainchild of chemistry teachers Bergman and Sams who coined
this term in a publication in 2012. Both of these teachers experimented with their teaching style by
assigning videos of their classroom lectures for homework and using classroom instruction time to
work interactively with students who were either having difficulty understanding the material or had
the ability to work ahead. After reporting on their success, others have tried this method in their
classrooms. Although the results are varied, there is a willingness on the part of teachers to experiment
with this model both in the United States and overseas. Success may be related to the age of the
student, the commitment of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Advances in technology have made it possible for the instruction to move beyond teacher delivered
material in class followed by a review of the material by students in the form of homework (Steed,
2012). In theory, if the students are in control of the pace of their learning, their outcomes will be
better. Students, who are able to absorb new material at home, will come to class prepared to put the
knowledge into practice and thus reinforce the new material. The flipped classroom (Bergman Sams,
2012; Bull, et. al., 2012) involves the presentation of the new material via a video lecture which
students will watch at home prior to coming to class. Time in the classroom can then be dedicated to
putting the material into use, creating an environment of understanding by doing. Although success
with this format has been reported in some subject areas by some teachers, the concept has not been
widely studied over a long enough period of time to give conclusive data on student learning using
this method (Herreid Schiller, 2013; Moran, 2015). The review of literature was conducted in an effort
to answer the following questions regarding the flipped classroom:
1. Do students who normally have trouble with homework assignments demonstrate increased
achievement when they watch lectures at home and then do the written assignments in school?
2. Do

The Ironic Theories Of Mind
For centuries, inquisitive minds have struggled to comprehend the notion of a non physical soul. They
attempted to explain the soul using tangible, representative parts of the human body. Throughout
history, scientists and philosophers have explained the representative theories of mind using a variety
of logical and experimental techniques. The logical arguments produced cardiovascular and ventricle
theories of the mind, and the experimental techniques led to the encephalic theory of mind and
medical practices like phrenology and more recently MRI brain scanning.
The Greek philosopher Empedocles presented the first mind/soul theory, suggesting the heart and
blood were the physical embodiment of the mind/soul. Empedocles cardiocentric view was later
termed the cardiovascular theory. Empedocles believed the mind/soul resided in the heart and blood
because both were centrally located within the body. Another well known philosopher, Aristotle,
agreed with Empedocles belief, but used anatomical observation, instead of logic, to support his claim.
Aristotle observed a warm heart and a cold brain while conducting dissections of the deceased. During

Hippocrates strayed from the church s teaching, believing the disease could be explained by natural

Life In My Life
Life is 10% what happens to is and 90% how we react to it said Dennis p. Kimbro. The lives of most
people are not always perfect and probably never will be; and that s ok because having a life with its
ups and downs is absolutely normal and ok. My life has had all of its up and downs and still does. I m
pretty sure most people or maybe just a few can relate to the kind of things that have shaped me into
the person I am today. Some may be bad or good experiences or people that have made any person
they are today. It might be surprising to some people how much in common we have just by looking
into our similar life changing experiences and encounters. These kind of events or people can make
you into the person you are today and give you the personality that you think fits you best. Being in
touch with God and my faith has really shaped me into the strong and independent person I am today,
also going through depression and having a child at a young age has made me stronger as well.
Not many people seem to fully understand how real depression is and how serious these feelings can
be. But I do in dealing with depression, medication, and surviving suicide attempts. I can discuss my
experiences truthfully and clearly. I remember the first time I thought of suicide. I thought of different
ways to do it, when and where. The days would be endless when I was depressed. I felt like a piece of
trash that was always getting stepped on or not seen. The mental institution I stayed at was so cold and
dull. Every day I would wake up and hear the screams and cries of other children, some younger than
me; They would beg to go home and cry saying i want to go home...let me see my mommy! I was
constantly reminded of this situation every time I looked down at my wrist and arms. Cuts and bruises
everywhere. Some from the doctors who constantly took out my blood or put stuff inside me, and
some caused by myself. I did not see this as getting help at first, i felt like i was in prison. I felt like i
was in trouble for what i had done. During my time of depression, i constantly felt alone. I was scared
all the time and feared the thoughts of being alone forever. This time in my life has really shaped me

Essay On Daytime Commercials
Pay Attention to the Commercials
Don t go to work! Don t go to school! Stay home tomorrow and watch some TV. Daytime television
commercials can be classified into who they are being marketed to. Businesses realize who will be

majority of the viewers between these times are the stay at home moms, out of work people, and the
people who stayed home from work sick. The only reason that I pick up on such a minor detail as this
is because my goal is to graduate from college with a major in marketing. I watch commercials and

There are two questions to consider on this topic:
How can a company determine if it receives a return on this investment? How can it be measured? If
we just look at the overall performance of the company, how can we determine the contribution of just
the CEO?
Can the large salaries of CEO be justified morally? Is this fair from the perspective of distributive
justice? Give reason why it is fair or not fair.
A company can determine if it receives a return on the investment of paying a CEO a particular
amount by several ways. They can determine by what the CEO does monetarily and non monitarily.
Did they lead well? Did they make positive changes to the culture? Did they increase profits? These
are just a few examples. You can determine the contribution of the CEO by the same ways. What are

Performance Analysis Of Fso Communication System
Performance Analysis of FSO Communication System: Effects of Fog, Rain and Humidity
Abstract Free Space Optics (FSO) is one of the most promising new access technologies. FSO
provides the transmission of data with unlimited bandwidth. The atmospheric attenuation is caused by
two main factors absorption and scattering. This paper investigates a performance study of free space
optics channel for variable wavelengths 850 nm, 950 nm and 1550 nm at distance range of 1 km. The
simulation reports minimum BER for NRZ OOK modulation technique at different receiver diameters
in presence of fog, rain and humidity attenuation. The results shows how to improve the system to
achieve minimum BER and maximize the power received that can be detect at distance 1 km.
Keywords free space optics (FSO); fog; rain; humidity. Introduction
FSO communication, also termed as optical wireless, is an optical communication technology that
uses line of sight communication system and tries to achieve the need for high bandwidth over short
distances [1]. There are various atmospheric attenuation effects on FSO link such as fog, rain, snow,
humidity and temperature [2]. The majority of FSO systems are using 850 nm, 950 nm and 1550 nm
[3 5] wavelengths. Research studies have shown that fog is the most important factor because the size
of fog particles is comparable to the transmission wavelength of optical and near infrared wave [6].

Water Conservation
WATER CONSERVATION
INTRODUCTION:
Water is essential for life on earth. Water is needed for growing food, keeping ourselves clean,
generating power, controlling fire and most importantly to stay alive! This list is simply non ending.
This shows that water is an integral part of our daily life and we are heavily dependent on it.
Water conservation
Refers to reducing the usage of water and recycling of waste water for different purposes such as
cleaning, manufacturing, and agricultural irrigation.
Water conservation can be defined as:
1. A reduction in water use accomplished by implementation of water conservation or water efficiency
measures; or, 2. Improved water management practices that reduce or enhance the ... Show more

Using less water also puts less pressure on our sewage treatment facilities, and uses less energy for
water supply to the grid.
Why should you conserve water?
There are many good reasons to conserve water. Water conservation can help meet future needs.
Saving water will save you money. Water conservation helps preserve the environment. Saving water
will save energy.
Although water conservation helps, some people have misconceptions about what water conservation
can and can t do. If we all work together to conserve water, we can help assure a bright and prosperous
life for future generations. Become an advocate of conservation in your community. Help promote
conservation as a wise and important water management principle.
[pic]SAVE MONEY
Conserving water saves you money! Not only will your water bill go down, but as you use less water,
your gas or energy bill will also decline. If your whole community conserves, you will also pay less
fees for water related services. Water conserving communities will not need to pay as much to develop
new supplies and expand or upgrade water and wastewater infrastructure.
Wise usage of water helps us in saving money. We have to pay for the water we use. If we use less
water, we will have more money left to spend on other things.

Mediation Is An Effective Method Of Dispute Resolution
One of the most peaceful and highly sought after ways of resolving conflict is mediation. It is the
process where a mutually acceptable third party, with no authority to make descisions, intervenes and
helps involved parties improve their relationships, enhance communication, and use effective problem
solving and negotiation procedures to reach mutually understanding or agreement.
Based on the current research found, mediation is an effective method of dispute resolution. In studies
prior to 1990, the reported settlement rate was approximately 60 percent and for the 1990 2000
decade, the reported rate on average was 75 percent . For our most recent decade, this rate is about the
same, roughly and 80 percent agreement rate.

For example, in the case study we did in lecture, many a times the reasons behind another person s
actions is not solely because of money, but rather by principles and values that were violated by the

were made by another, movement from entrenched positions become more possible.
Lastly, once they are able to air their moral framework, and come to a common solution, the end result
would be parties feeling psychologically more complete and satisfied. According to an article by Dr
Pinzon Salcedo (2002), that by not having a deeper reflection of one s true purpose in the mediation
process, close to 25% of participants who reach an agreement still express dissatisfaction.
On one of the mediation discussions we had, we realised that as the facts behind each party s anger
and resentment were not provided, this always leaves the opposite party feeling confused and
frustrated by the behaviour of the aggrieved person. Upon having a sharing of their moral framework
privately or openly, the mediation moves from the realm of physical demands, to really addressing the
root of the problem behind any hostilities. Therefore, when a successful mediation occurs, both parties
are psychologically more at peace with the decisions that are being made. This is large in part due to

Novelism In The Stagecoach
In Hollywood, there was a fear of communism and far left political ideas. Novelists of the time
influenced change in political ideas and national purpose along with the conflict between the common
man and capitalist corporations (Sklar 242). Their ideas influenced films like Stagecoach which
exposed corporate greed and corruption and other less than obvious forces at work in American
society (Sklar 242). Stagecoach was a Western film that addressed ideas regarding the end of the
American frontier and the end of expansion that reflects in the character of America (Blake 179). It
questions the values of big business and the sketchy banks with a corrupt banker, Gatewood, who
steals the bank roll and takes off to the West. The doctor, Peacock, is a raging alcoholic, and the hero,
Ringo Kid, falls in love with the prostitute, Dallas. Additionally, the Stagecoach itself is in poor repair
signifying the daunting condition of the United States at the time. The characters are not who they
appear to be and the end, where Dallas and Ringo go off into the sunset together, differs from
traditional Westerns where the hero cannot fall in love with anyone, let alone a prostitute. The
juxtaposition between the characters and their destiny s is symbolic of the chaos in America in the late
1930 s. The United States pulled out of the Great Depression through WWII. However, when WWII
was over, the United States still faced some of the same social issues that persisted through the 1920 s

No one is born to a genius. I do not believe in instant success, especially in writing. Most of the time

from other influences. By rereading an essay that I wrote before, I analyzed and learned about how

perfectly fit the genre, it helped me get to understand my grammatical choices and rhetorical styles for

based on some practices from Dana Ferris s book, Language Power. One interesting finding is that I

states, passive voice can emphasize information or deemphasize the actor (Ferris, 110). Passive

The Explorer Poem Analysis
The Explorer was written during the civil rights movement when Brooks started to focus on writing
for the black community. Through the blood, sweat, and sacrifice her community experiences every
day, she is inspired to write this particular piece to show that African Americans, although are scared,
will keep fighting and searching for their utopia. Starting from stanza one, the word frayed stands out
the most. Repeated twice, it immediately tells the reader that the situation is not that of hope and is life
changing to the main character. Still spot also references that the main character is looking for a quiet
setting. The theme of quiet and peace is renounced in stanza two as words such as velvet peace and
willy hush also go along with the peace and quiet theme. Now, the reader gains a better sense of the
financial condition of the main character. Tatters makes the reader think that the main character is poor
and financially challenged, and knowing Brooks purpose of the poem is about revitalizing hope for the
black community, the main character is most likely black male. Moreover, Brooks inserts a metaphor
that comprises most of the stanza and ultimately depicts that the character in the poem is trying to find
peace and quiet both within a house and his mind (Poem 3). Next in stanza three, the main purpose of
this stanza is to describe what exactly is happening to the main character. Tipping down the scrambled

the transformations of puberty in both males and females. Part four of this essay focuses on the
differentiation between male and female sexuality. Freud states in this part that as far as the autoerotic
and masturbatory manifestations of sexuality ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is at puberty that the sexual nature of girls becomes feminine, that is, passive or receptive. Puberty
for girls is marked by a fresh wave of repression in which it is precisely clitoral sexuality that is
affected, thus overtaking the heretofore active nature of a little girl s sexuality, and replacing it with a
passive non clitoral leading sexual zone focused on the vaginal orifice. The clitoris retains a role in
sexual excitement but its task is in transmitting the excitation to the adjacent female sexual parts and is
not the primary sexual zone as experienced in boys.
Before women can transfer their leading zone from the clitoris to the external genitalia an interval
must occur during which the young woman is anaesthetic, that is unresponsive sexually. This period
occurs at the very time that the pubertal male libido is growing and seeking a sexual object. The
pubertal repression of females acts as a kind of stimulus to the libido of men and causes an increase in
its activity. The repression of pubertal girls leads the male libido to a sexual overvaluation of its
chosen object, which is unobtainable. When a woman has successfully transferred the erotogenic zone
from the clitoris to the vaginal orifice, it implies that she has adopted a new leading zone for the
purposes of her later sexual activity. This is in contrast to the male erotogenic zone, which remains
unchanged from childhood. Freud notes that it is precisely this

Unity of a Family Explored in The Grapes of Wrath Essay
Unity of a Family Explored in The Grapes of Wrath
One would say that on a literal level The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck is about the Joad family s
journey to California during The Dust Bowl. However, it is also about the unity of a family and the
concept of birth and death, both literal and abstract. Along with this, the idea of a family unit is
explored through these births and deaths.
As can be seen in The Grapes of Wrath, the Joads are a very tight knit family. Yet on their trip to
California, they experience many losses and additions to their family. In general, Steinbeck s novel
abides by the circle of life. When a birth occurs, a death follows, and when a death occurs, a birth
follows. However, in The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Chapter Thirteen, Grampa does die, as he was never truly the same once he left his land. This is
because the land goes back to Grampa s ancestry, and losing the land is like losing a family member.
This is the Joad family s first run in with death on their journey, yet Ma Joad still manages to keep the
family together.
Moreover, in Chapter Thirteen, as the Joad family continues on their journey, they meet the Wilson
family. The two families decide to carry on with their trip together. It is at this point that Steinbeck
follows the pattern of the circle of life. Steinbeck begins by writing about the rebirth of Tom Joad.
Next, Grampa dies. Following this, there is a birth for the Joads when they add the Wilson family to
their own. However, as previously stated, in order to represent the hardships of the journey, many
more deaths than births occur in the novel. In Chapter Eighteen alone, Noah leaves the family, the
Joads continue on without the Wilson family, and Granma dies. It may seem like these losses would
tear the family apart, but Ma Joad understands the concept of family, and tries her hardest to keep the
family as one unit. For example, Ma Joad sits up all night with Granma s dead body, jut so the family
can cross the border. The fambly hadda get acrost (312).
Furthermore, by the time Chapter Nineteen ends, the Joads lost their land, their dog, Grampa, Noah,
Granma, and the Wilsons. In Chapter

Respect and Integrity in the Military Essay
Respect and integrity, what really do those mean? I could look up those words in the Oxford English
Dictionary or Websters, or Dictionary.com and give a scientific, perscise and exact answer to these
words. And while that tells you what they mean, does that really give their meaning. Well by
Dictionary.com s standards respect is a noun that means to hold in esteem or honor, and to show
regard or consideration for. And Dictionary.com says that integrity means an adherence to moral and
ethical principles; soundness of moral character, honesty, and the state of being whole, entire, or
undiminished as to morality. The Army on the other hand has their own, similar, but specific
definitions for these words, they call values, and are one of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Army Value views respect as something that is just between people, yet at the same time it is also
something that is between offices. Each rank is expected to show a certain respect for the ranks above
them. In some units a private is expected respect a specialist, while both show respect for their
sergeants. This has less to do with the specific people then it does with their experience and respect
and of their peers and the people who are situated over them. As soldier we respect the ranks that are
above us because their peers and other higher Sergeants have seen something in them. Some form of
leadership, or the craftsmanship and mastery of their job that they have found some respect for them,
and decided that they deserve to be honored for it. These are people who have seen many soldiers, and
been in the Army long enough to recognize these traits in a person, and other people should respect
that. Not just because of the office they hold but because of their experience that led them to that
office. The Army has kind of got it right, in a way. They view respect as a way that we should act
towards each other and treat each other. But Respect is still so much more then that. You can not
respect just a person, or a rank, or a position, but also someones experience that has led them to where
they are. Its more about feelings

No Country For Old Men Themes
There are several apparent themes throughout the film No Country for Old Men . These themes
express a particular opinion about human nature and life in general. Although this film is complex,
and in my opinion littered with several themes, the three main themes are violence, good vs. evil, and
fate vs. freewill. There are many reasons why these three are the most central themes in this movie, as
well as many scenes that portray this observation. The fact that No Country for Old Men is a violent
movie is apparent almost immediately. The first main character that we are introduced to visually is
Anton Chigruh. Our first insight into his character is that he has a complete disregard for human life,
which contributes to his eerie and unsettling persona; even the manner in which he kills people
furthers this observation. He uses a pressurized cattle gun, as if the life of a cow and life of a human
are one in the same. Furthermore, while watching this film you ... Show more content on

evil. The scene that really propels this story forward is when Llewelyn Moss brings water to the
injured man he had discover earlier that day. In the midst of his good deed, evil in the form of crazed
men with guns, comes driving down the hill. They fire at Moss, who then tumbles down a small hill
and into a river, barely escaping. In this scene, you see a glimpse into the struggle between good vs
evil. This scene, of course, is a small example of the overall good vs. evil theme as a whole. In a larger
more general sense, good vs. evil is shown in the plot of the story. The plot can be captured in these
two questions: Will the sheriff Ed Tom Bell (the good guy) catch Anton Chigruh or Llewelyn Moss
(the bad guys)? And in whose hands will the money fall? Although Moss is not necessarily considered
one of the good guys, he isn t all bad. Each character has varying degrees of both good and evil; this is
shown in their actions and inner

Corporate Cost, Human Resource Management Cost
As corporate cost is the cost associate with Treasury cost, Human resource management cost. Acitivity
based costing seeks to identify cost drivers that are directly link all the activities e.g. support activities
and production activities to the product manufactured or service provided. The cost of all those
activities are assigned to products or services via the activity cost driver, according to the each product
relative consumption of these activities. Allocating corporate overheads based on the use of volume
related cost driver alone can produce the misleading cost information such as inappropriate allocation
can lead to faulty conclusions about the relative product profitability.
Whether corporate costs should be allocated to individual divisions when an business has more than
one division that depends on whether the corporate costs are incurred primarily to support divisions
business activities and whether the allocation can be reliably determined. For example, if the
divisional companies are not closely related to the corporate costs and similarly the corporate costs are
not necessarily incurred to facilitate the operation of each division then arguably the corporate costs
should not be allocated to divisions.
The allocation division also depends on the nature and type of the business, the purpose of the
corporate costs allocation process and how divisions are divided. For example, if the change of
corporate cost is in proportionate with the increase or decrease of

The Connecticut River, The Common Sewer Overflow And Sewer...
Introduction
In this research paper I will be talking about the Connecticut River, the common sewer overflow and
sewer discharge that goes into the river, I will be focusing on the pollutants that are in the CT river, I
will also focus on the high density towns and the affect it has on them, then I will talk about the
ecological impacts and economical aspects. The Connecticut River is the longest river in the New
England region, it spans through five states Maine (Small portions), Vermont, New Hampshire,
Massachusetts and Connecticut, discharging into the Long island sound. The river serves more than
two million people throughout New England. The main issue with the river is the untreated storm
water and sewer waste that is being discharged into it which causes many harmful effects not only to
the many different species that call the CT River its home, but to the people that live around the CT
River. Combined sewer overflows (CSOs), the discharging of combined sewer systems directly into
surface waters upon capacity overload, are a large source of pollution of U.S. waterways. A report
from the Environment and Connecticut Research and policy center has said that industrial facilities
have discharged 224,029 pounds of toxic waste into the Connecticut waterways in the year of 2012.
There are many government agencies such as the EPA and committees like the Connecticut River
Cleanup Committee that are raising funds and awareness in order to help clean up the Connecticut

Psychics And The Lottery Essay
Psychics and the Lottery
There s a controversial saying that if psychics really have the ability to predict the future, then why
don t they win the lottery? Well, in fact, psychics do win the lottery all the time. When you do your
research there are plenty of stories of self proclaimed psychics who won the lottery. There are news
stories about them and there are even some lottery winners who claimed to receive their winning
numbers from psychics and shamans.
Of course, you shouldn t trust certain television psychics who just want to milk the public for money.
These people are straight up liars or they will analyze and say things that anybody can see in a person.
Some of these psychics use astrology predictions to help them get an angle on a person, but when it
comes to real predictions they re clueless. However, there are psychics who are truly about that life.
They can predict the future and it takes them a little bit of time to do it. These psychics are low key
and they don t do it for money. They have a spiritual gift and want to share it with people. There is a
rule in the real psychic community that says you can t use your powers for personal gain, and this is
the reason why many real psychics don t typically play the lottery. But there are some who receive
messages from the Universe to play the lottery and they win. When they ... Show more content on

Voltaire s Theory Of Optimism
Candide, published in 1759 by Voltaire, is a satirical novella criticizing the type of European
Civilization Voltaire grew up around. Voltaire is known for his literary works mocking the time period
he lived in, especially when it came to their religious beliefs and the aristocracy he was surrounded
with. Due to Voltaire s experiences in Paris with European Society, Candide showcases his contempt
for organized religion, noble rank, and optimist philosophy.
Candide, the illegitimate son of a Baron s sister, lives in the Baron s castle, studying under the
philosopher Pangloss. Pangloss teaches Candide his theory of optimism, keeping Candide innocent to
the world beyond the castle. He thinks that the castle is the best castle there is, and that everything
happens for a good reason, a belief that Pangloss has instilled in him. Cunégonde, the Baron s
daughter, has caught the eye of Candide, and when they are found in a compromising romantic
position, he is tossed out of the Castle. From there, Candide sets out on many adventures, most having
unfortunate ends, giving Candide a taste of the reality he never got from castle life and studying under
Pangloss. He first enlists as a soldier, but is soon flogged for being a deserter. He escapes to Holland
where he is taken in by a kind Anabaptist, and discovers Pangloss as a deformed beggar who has
contracted syphilis. As optimistic as ever, Pangloss informs Candide that the baron and his family,
including Cunégonde have been murdered

In today s biotech marketplace, oncology leads the therapeutic research and commercial space. Cancer
tops the charts as one of the leading causes of death in the United States and around the world
(antibody Drug Conjugates). Early stages of cancer treatment often involve surgery and radiation
therapy. However, chemotherapy drugs, often a last resort, are leading the market in therapeutics for
cancer treatment. Most chemotherapy drugs on the market today do not have the ability to target the
cancer specifically; this leads to unwanted toxic effects to non target organs. Monoclonal antibodies
offer another approach to treating cancer by binding to the cancer surface receptors and offer cancer
killing abilities without the cytotoxic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This therapeutic approach is able to deliver cytotoxic compounds directly to the site of interest, via
linker attachment with cytotoxic compound and antibodies. There are many benefits to ADCs
including increased efficacy of future and current marketed cytotoxic compounds.
ImmunoGen increases its market share by sublicensing this technology to pharmaceutical companies
including Sanofi, Roche, Eli Lilly, and Amgen. For example, Bayer has exclusive licenses to
ImmunoGen maytansinoid TAP technology. The exclusive license grants Bayer the rights to develop
treatments only targeting mesothelin (Cancer Drug Developers Considering ImmunoGen s Tap
Technology). This endeavor is expected to net ImmunoGen roughly $170M for each product
engineered, not including future royalties on sales. Furthermore, Novartis has agreed to license
ImmunoGen s TAP technology to target cancer therapeutics as well (Cancer Drug Developers
Considering ImmunoGen s Tap Technology). This potential deal is set to bring in roughly $200M.
ImmunoGen s TAP technology produces ADCs to develop improved cancer fighting agents. This is
accomplished by first engineering an antibody to accept a linker that will eventually attach to the
cytotoxic area of interest. This technology can be used to develop cytotoxic compounds or to enhance
currently marketed cytotoxic compounds. Currently, ImmunoGen has roughly 25 ADC products in the
pipeline (ADC The New Frontier). Kadcyla combines

Vampires Never Die, By Guillermo Del Toro And Chuck Hogan
In the text Vampires Never Die, by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan, the authors main purpose is
to tell the origin of vampires and how the perception of vampires has changed throughout history.
Although the myth of an undead monster was created before the word vampire ever was, this text
begins with a story told by John William Polidori that created the two main branches of vampire
fiction known today. These branches include the vampire as a romantic hero and the vampire as an
undead monster. Moreover, Polidori s creation was widely accepted as being based upon Lord Byron,
a superstar in the era of the 1800s. This new twist to an old idea was thought of by Polidori because he
was a doctor and friend to Lord Byron. Nonetheless, Polidori resented Lord Byron s charm, physique,
and brilliance thus creating the alter egos. However, this text also suggest vampires may have
originated from the repressed memories humans had as primates. Therefore, out of necessity, people
may have been cannibalistic. In addition, this text suggest that vampires do not wish to destroy human
lives but rather live for eternity. Furthermore, vampire characters are often used today in a variety of
media ranging anywhere from cereal boxes to romantic fiction. Additionally, Polidori s Dracula
vampire movie was a success due to the featuring of new technology at the time including telegraphs,
typing machines, and blood transfusions. Today, the world is exposed to wireless technology and is

  • 2. Metaphors And The Natural World Whether we know it or not, we make use of metaphors daily in many ways to help us make sense of the world. A metaphor is defined as a figure of speech that identifies an object or an idea that is similar to an unrelated thing. The use of metaphors and the language that they portray help to create new insight into the universe. They not only help classify the natural world, and help interpret the scientific world, but they also set outlooks on individuals culture and society; however, some may argue that metaphors are an impractical use of our language that only complicate things that can instead be stated clearer. Our perspectives and the way we think are directly linked to how we talk and communicate in in the natural world and how we are viwed by society. This is explained further in detailed in Metaphors We Live By, because it clearly shows how individuals shape their perspectives based on their experiences in society: In most of the little things we do every day, we simply think and act more or less automatically along certain lines, (Lackoff Johnson 3). This furthers proves how much metaphors can affect the way we think and the way we see the world from what we undergo and experience in our life it is what gives us an opinion on certain matters of race, gender, religion, etc. We all think and act according to how we interact with our society and it is the power of metaphors that help guide and change one s beliefs to help portray our own perspective for others. ... • 3. Power Relation Within The Household power relation within the household. According to Kottegoda (2006) majority of the migrant women practiced their control over earnings by sending part of the earnings to a bank account on their own name to ensure that no one else can handle it. The 16% successful return entrepreneurs who were depicted in Handapangoda (2012) survey have been maintaining their business ventures by investing the cash savings which were initiated during their stay in Middle East. For most migrants out of this 16%, the income earned through the business was the only income for the family, thus the contribution served as the de facto breadwinner role . Improved role of decision making Decision making power can be considered as the agency of making choices as far as empowerment concepts considered (Kabeer, 1999). For the purpose of this study decision making is categorised as financial decision making and non financial decision making within the house hold level. Decisions such as house hold resource allocation and spending are financial while decisions such as child care, domestic matters and social concerns are considered non financial. Compared to the less influential power of decision making power before migration, 90% of migrant women reported improved level of decision making power during their stay (Handapangoda, 2012). This is basically related to the relatively greater financial contribution of them to the household income. It has opened wider opportunity and agency over house hold ... • 4. The Ethic of the Community in Luke’s Gospel For the sake of this study, Luke s Gospel plays an important role in establishing the identity of the members of the community. Indeed, without Luke s Gospel our visual images of the Christian story would be impoverished because Luke s Gospel [can be considered] the aesthetic teacher of Christian senses in hearing and speech through story and song and in sight through the many artistic renderings of his stories. Luke accomplishes this feat by using cultural conventions surrounding hospitality and banqueting to illustrate such important facets of Jesus teaching as generosity to the poor, forgiveness of sinners, humility rather than social power, and the priority given to the word of God. The importance of community is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 6:13). Upon calling the disciples he proceeds to move down to a plain ( level place v. 17) and begins an extended time of teaching. After moving through the Blessings and Woes (vv. 20 26, par. Matt. 5:2 12), Jesus institutes an ethic for his disciples. This ethic is characterized by love for enemies (vv. 27 36) not judging (v. 37 38), the first of which appears to be a combination of two of the antitheses found in Matthew s account (Mt. 5:43 48, 38 42) with the golden rule serving as a hinge that connects them. In this section Jesus establishes a society that is not necessarily its own nation or state, but rather a community that forms its own sphere of life ... which lives in a different way and treats others in a different way than is usual elsewhere in the world. ... It is not the violent structures of the powers of this world which are to rule within it, but rather reconciliation and brotherhood. 27 28 Luke starts the section with a strong adversative (Alla, but ) to mark the transition from the Blessings and Woes to this new ethic for his disciples. In using the alla, + uvmi/n structure Luke stresses the audience of the teaching is intended to be his disciples, as uvmi/n is in the emphatic position. The primary imperative is to love enemies and is supported with three subordinate imperatives: Do good ..., bless ..., and pray. The imperatives to bless and pray for are practical examples of how to love enemies which both explain what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Too Much to Bear in The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien Too Much to Bear The things I carry are both figurative and literal. I carry a pen, a pencil, a textbook or two, and paper. I carry memories, experiences, pain, guilt, cowardice, love and happiness. In the novel The Things They Carried by Tim O Brien, O Brien centralizes on why people carry what they do, physical or not. To be honest, I carry what I do because I must. If I don t carry that one textbook that one day, I ll regret it. If I forget what it was like have my first icecream cone, what if felt like the instant my mouth froze up and the inside of my head pounded so loudly I almost screamed, I will be less of who I am today. What I carry defines me. In the novel, the tangible and intangible loads the soldiers carry define them; such as Lt. Cross s who carry s a picture of and intangible feelings for Martha. What the soldiers burdened themselves with was largely determined, emotionally or physically, was by necessity. The tangible objects depicted in the book are especially relevant. The author s style of writing is very elaborate only because he wants the readers to discern sympathy towards the soldiers. The author tells us about the weight of the objects each of the soldiers carry to supplement our overall total lasting impression. O Brien says in the first chapter, he recounts the literal objects each soldier carried. As PFCs or Spec 4s, most of them were common grunts and carried the standard M 16 gas operated assault rifle. The weapon weighed 7.5 pounds ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Ideology Of Altered Images Colter Sternhagen Professor Gilbertson Global Visual Culture 11 February 2016 Ideology of Images Altered images have found a commonplace in all variations of todays s media. It seems rare anymore that you find yourself looking at a totally original image presented in mainstream media. This is because producers and advertisement companies know they can persuade their audience much more effectively by digitally altering their images. And they have perfected the technique. The phenomenon is an interesting one, and one that has dramatically affected lives in both good, and bad ways. Protection o The integumentary system protects the human body in two ways physically and chemically.  Physically, keratinized epithelial cells (outermost layer of skin cells) act as a tough waterproof barrier. These keratinized cells are really good at protecting the body from water loss, mechanical and chemical injury, and keeping bacterial cells out of the body.  Chemically, a chemical barrier is formed by the production of acidic secretions by the sebaceous (oil) glands. • 13. Analysis Of Verses Upon The Burning Of Our House Anne Bradstreet was and is a highly regarded Puritan poet of seventeenth century American literature. She defied cultural expectations of women at the time and became the first accomplished woman poet of the New World. As evident in her poetry, she was strictly loyal to God and her Puritan beliefs, but she was not exempt from grief and doubt in the face of tragedy. Some, however, would argue that her grief and doubt in response to those tragedies showed a stray from her strict Puritan belief system. One controversial tragic event, in particular, that she wrote about exemplified her struggle between earthly desires and heavenly truths: the blaze that overtook her family s home. Anne Bradstreet, in her poem Verses upon the Burning of Our House, demonstrates the common internal conflict of Christians as she battles between her Puritan theology and her innate human emotions in response to her devastating house fire. Anne was born in the early seventeenth century in England. She was privileged with an excellent education because her father, Thomas Dudley, was a steward to a prominent figure. She married Simon Bradstreet at just sixteen years of age while still residing in England. When Anne was still a teenager, the Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Company made the decision to leave and settle together in the New World, the Dudleys and Bradstreets journeyed with them. Intraoperative brain mapping, sometimes called awake brain surgery, is a procedure used to remove brain tumours without damaging the brain, and as the name suggests, the patient is sedated but very much awake. Procedures such as these are nothing short of remarkable, and as science and medicine continue to develop, conditions which would have meant certain death can now be treated with relative ease. The magnitude of the negative charges of cells are identified with an in vivo dye which causes more negative areas to glow more brightly. What has been found is that more negative areas in frogs essentially plot where certain features, in one case the eyes, are going to develop. By manipulating an area on the tail slightly more negative, the frog developed with an eye on its tail. Such a small alteration had such a significant outcome on the frog, which is an indication of how powerful this research is. Chemical modification was also found to strongly influence the developing embryos when a frog embryo was treated with Prilosec, a stomach acid relief drug, which caused craniofacial defects as well as causing the organs to develop on opposite sides of the body. Prilosec interfered with the movement of the ion set, potassium and hydrogen, which was enough to impact patterning in the developing frog, resulting in defects. Research in the field has also been applied to try and improve severed spinal cords. In these tests, the movement of nerves was controlled by introducing a charge difference across the break in the spine. This caused nerves to move towards the charge and from here they were able to heal. Although it was found that the nerves couldn t move past the scar tissue, the experiment indicated that these techniques have to potential to be effectively applied to developed individuals, which could mean a chance at recovery for those living with spinal ... The most ethical solution is to only resort to extreme methods of treatments if the patient is clearly seen as not being mentally stable enough to provide the right judgement call, and if they are in a life threatening situation in which they could potentially harm themselves or others. Patient, Ms. A. , a 72 year old woman became seriously depressed and was not responding to any psychotherapy or drugs pertaining to clinical depression. She was barely able to function properly, and after a course of eight ECT sessions of unilateral ultrabrief pulse treatments , her score on the Hamilton Depression Rating scale, ranked out of 24, went from 38 to 6. Advances in technology have made it possible for the instruction to move beyond teacher delivered material in class followed by a review of the material by students in the form of homework (Steed, 2012). In theory, if the students are in control of the pace of their learning, their outcomes will be better. Students, who are able to absorb new material at home, will come to class prepared to put the knowledge into practice and thus reinforce the new material. The flipped classroom (Bergman Sams, 2012; Bull, et. al., 2012) involves the presentation of the new material via a video lecture which students will watch at home prior to coming to class. Time in the classroom can then be dedicated to putting the material into use, creating an environment of understanding by doing. Although success with this format has been reported in some subject areas by some teachers, the concept has not been widely studied over a long enough period of time to give conclusive data on student learning using this method (Herreid Schiller, 2013; Moran, 2015). They attempted to explain the soul using tangible, representative parts of the human body. Throughout history, scientists and philosophers have explained the representative theories of mind using a variety of logical and experimental techniques. The logical arguments produced cardiovascular and ventricle theories of the mind, and the experimental techniques led to the encephalic theory of mind and medical practices like phrenology and more recently MRI brain scanning. The Greek philosopher Empedocles presented the first mind/soul theory, suggesting the heart and blood were the physical embodiment of the mind/soul. Empedocles cardiocentric view was later termed the cardiovascular theory. Empedocles believed the mind/soul resided in the heart and blood because both were centrally located within the body. According to Friedlander (1947), classical Freudian psychoanalytic explanations of delinquency focus on abnormalities or disturbances in the individual s emotional development from early childhood. Since then many people have amended his original writings and presently there are numerous versions Freud s original psychoanalytical theory. The psychoanalytical theory focuses on the development of personality, the stages of development and the emotional problems reflecting some unconscious aspects of one s psychological functioning. Second, Behavior and unconscious motives are intertwined, and their interaction must be unraveled if we are to understand criminality. Third, Criminality is essentially a representation of psychological conflict (p. 86). Freud believes that criminality has a lot to do with the structural model of the mind. He breaks the mind down into three categories; the Id, Ego, and the Superego. The Id is the unconscious seat of irrational, antisocial, and instinctual impulses which must be controlled and shaped for social adaptation to life in society (Akers, 1999, p. 50). When newborn babies are born, they have biological drives that are unaffected by society. The Id can be considered the instructional forces, which focuses around sexual desires or drives. The Unreliability of Human Memory is an analytical essay from my Workload 57S class. This paper is about how human memory is unreliable due to memory distortion and changes from other influences. By rereading an essay that I wrote before, I analyzed and learned about how efficient did I write in a particular genre. For this analytical essay about the human brain, I would categorize it as a scientific popular article with the emphasis on psychology. Although it might not perfectly fit the genre, it helped me get to understand my grammatical choices and rhetorical styles for improving on writing. In order to analyze my essay, I made a chart that summarizes my grammar patterns and writing styles based on some practices from Dana Ferris s book, Language Power. One interesting finding is that I heavily relied on using subordinating conjunctions. About 47% of my sentences used conjunctions to combine clauses. In addition, I used 4 passive sentences out of 55 total sentences. In her book, Ferris states, passive voice can emphasize information or deemphasize the actor (Ferris, 110). Passive sentences frown on in most genres, but it can also be common in scientific writings. Lastly, my essay used a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. The Explorer Poem Analysis The Explorer was written during the civil rights movement when Brooks started to focus on writing for the black community. Through the blood, sweat, and sacrifice her community experiences every day, she is inspired to write this particular piece to show that African Americans, although are scared, will keep fighting and searching for their utopia. Starting from stanza one, the word frayed stands out the most. Repeated twice, it immediately tells the reader that the situation is not that of hope and is life changing to the main character. Still spot also references that the main character is looking for a quiet setting. The theme of quiet and peace is renounced in stanza two as words such as velvet peace and willy hush also go along with the peace and quiet theme. Now, the reader gains a better sense of the financial condition of the main character. Tatters makes the reader think that the main character is poor and financially challenged, and knowing Brooks purpose of the poem is about revitalizing hope for the black community, the main character is most likely black male. Moreover, Brooks inserts a metaphor that comprises most of the stanza and ultimately depicts that the character in the poem is trying to find peace and quiet both within a house and his mind (Poem 3). Next in stanza three, the main purpose of this stanza is to describe what exactly is happening to the main character. Tipping down the scrambled halls reveals that the main character does not ... This instinct is not simply an animal instinct but is specific to both human culture and the form of conscious and unconscious life we live within it. For Freud sexuality is infinitely complicated and far reaching in its effects and forms the basis of self identity and interactions. It is at puberty that the sexual nature of girls becomes feminine, that is, passive or receptive. Puberty for girls is marked by a fresh wave of repression in which it is precisely clitoral sexuality that is affected, thus overtaking the heretofore active nature of a little girl s sexuality, and replacing it with a passive non clitoral leading sexual zone focused on the vaginal orifice. The clitoris retains a role in sexual excitement but its task is in transmitting the excitation to the adjacent female sexual parts and is not the primary sexual zone as experienced in boys. Before women can transfer their leading zone from the clitoris to the external genitalia an interval must occur during which the young woman is anaesthetic, that is unresponsive sexually. This period occurs at the very time that the pubertal male libido is growing and seeking a sexual object. The pubertal repression of females acts as a kind of stimulus to the libido of men and causes an increase in its activity. The repression of pubertal girls leads the male libido to a sexual overvaluation of its chosen object, which is unobtainable. When a woman has successfully transferred the erotogenic zone from the clitoris to the vaginal orifice, it implies that she has adopted a new leading zone for the purposes of her later sexual activity. This is in contrast to the male erotogenic zone, which remains unchanged from childhood. Freud notes that it is precisely this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Unity of a Family Explored in The Grapes of Wrath Essay Unity of a Family Explored in The Grapes of Wrath One would say that on a literal level The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck is about the Joad family s journey to California during The Dust Bowl. However, it is also about the unity of a family and the concept of birth and death, both literal and abstract. Along with this, the idea of a family unit is explored through these births and deaths. As can be seen in The Grapes of Wrath, the Joads are a very tight knit family. Yet on their trip to California, they experience many losses and additions to their family. In general, Steinbeck s novel abides by the circle of life. When a birth occurs, a death follows, and when a death occurs, a birth follows. However, in The ... This is because the land goes back to Grampa s ancestry, and losing the land is like losing a family member. This is the Joad family s first run in with death on their journey, yet Ma Joad still manages to keep the family together. Moreover, in Chapter Thirteen, as the Joad family continues on their journey, they meet the Wilson family. The two families decide to carry on with their trip together. It is at this point that Steinbeck follows the pattern of the circle of life. Steinbeck begins by writing about the rebirth of Tom Joad. Next, Grampa dies. Following this, there is a birth for the Joads when they add the Wilson family to their own. However, as previously stated, in order to represent the hardships of the journey, many more deaths than births occur in the novel. In Chapter Eighteen alone, Noah leaves the family, the Joads continue on without the Wilson family, and Granma dies. It may seem like these losses would tear the family apart, but Ma Joad understands the concept of family, and tries her hardest to keep the family as one unit. For example, Ma Joad sits up all night with Granma s dead body, jut so the family can cross the border. The fambly hadda get acrost (312). This has less to do with the specific people then it does with their experience and respect and of their peers and the people who are situated over them. Although this film is complex, and in my opinion littered with several themes, the three main themes are violence, good vs. evil, and fate vs. freewill. There are many reasons why these three are the most central themes in this movie, as well as many scenes that portray this observation. The fact that No Country for Old Men is a violent movie is apparent almost immediately. The first main character that we are introduced to visually is Anton Chigruh. Our first insight into his character is that he has a complete disregard for human life, which contributes to his eerie and unsettling persona; even the manner in which he kills people furthers this observation. The Connecticut River is the longest river in the New England region, it spans through five states Maine (Small portions), Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut, discharging into the Long island sound. Voltaire is known for his literary works mocking the time period he lived in, especially when it came to their religious beliefs and the aristocracy he was surrounded with. Due to Voltaire s experiences in Paris with European Society, Candide showcases his contempt for organized religion, noble rank, and optimist philosophy. Candide, the illegitimate son of a Baron s sister, lives in the Baron s castle, studying under the philosopher Pangloss. Pangloss teaches Candide his theory of optimism, keeping Candide innocent to the world beyond the castle. Vampires Never Die, By Guillermo Del Toro And Chuck Hogan In the text Vampires Never Die, by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan, the authors main purpose is to tell the origin of vampires and how the perception of vampires has changed throughout history. Although the myth of an undead monster was created before the word vampire ever was, this text begins with a story told by John William Polidori that created the two main branches of vampire fiction known today. These branches include the vampire as a romantic hero and the vampire as an undead monster. Moreover, Polidori s creation was widely accepted as being based upon Lord Byron, a superstar in the era of the 1800s. This new twist to an old idea was thought of by Polidori because he was a doctor and friend to Lord Byron. Nonetheless, Polidori resented Lord Byron s charm, physique, and brilliance thus creating the alter egos. However, this text also suggest vampires may have originated from the repressed memories humans had as primates. Therefore, out of necessity, people may have been cannibalistic. In addition, this text suggest that vampires do not wish to destroy human lives but rather live for eternity. Furthermore, vampire characters are often used today in a variety of media ranging anywhere from cereal boxes to romantic fiction.
