The Influence Of Loyalty In The Novel Ship Breaker
The dictionary defines the word loyalty as a strong feeling of support or allegiance. Schools across the
nation stand every morning, put their hands on their hearts and pledge their loyalty to their country.
The novel Ship Breaker is about a young boy named Nailer who works to break ships apart in a
futuristic society. His mom died and his father, Richard, became an addict leaving them very poor and
reliant on Nailer s income. One day, Nailer is walking the beach with his friend Pima recovering
supplies after a hurricane, there they find a massive clipper ship with one survivor inside. The girl
inside, Nita, was fleeing capture from her family s enemies and shipwrecked. Soon after, Richard
Lopez and his crew found Nailer, Nita, and Pima and captured them, planning to sell Nita to her
enemies. With a stroke of luck, the three manage to escape from Richard. Nailer and Nita fled to New
Orleans with an unfaithful member of Lopez s crew. While in Orleans, the trio finds work, allies, and
an escape from Nita s enemies. Then, Nita is captured by the enemy who has allied with Richard
Lopez. In response, Nailer set out on the clipper ship of his dreams to find her, and unknowingly, to
find himself. True loyalty doesn t come with any ties, it is unconditional and without hesitation. In
Paolo Baciagalupi s Science Fiction book Ship Breaker, use of symbolism and conflict tell the story of
Nailer Lopez and his journey to find that loyalty doesn t just lie in family, it s who has your

Word Accuracy And Word Frequency Essay
This study is a conceptualized replication of the Howes and Solomon (1951) experiment investigating
word accuracy and word frequency in short duration trials. It is hypothesized that words that appear
more often in printed text (easier to access in the lexicon) will be more accurately identified rather
than words that appear less commonly. A total of 83 participants in the study were presented with
words taken from the Throndike Lorge database. The words were presented for one second with a six
second rest in the middle. This was done sixty times and the results suggest a moderate strong
relationship between word accuracy and frequency. Though there are multiple factors that may have
influenced these results. Introduction Word recognition involves an individual s ability to identify
words independently without requiring related words for contextual help. A widely examined topic in
the field of cognitive psychology, it deals with understanding printed letters as a word which has been
kept in the lexicon. The word frequency effect is important in the recognition of words. It suggests
more common words in printed language are easier, faster and more accurate to distinguish than words
that appear less frequently. Outlined in their journal article, Howes and Solomon utilized Thorndike
Lorge s word count for word frequency and measured the threshold of recognition. They found
correlation coefficients of .68 to .75 between word frequency and threshold or duration.

The Capitalist-Free Market
There are many differences between a capitalist free market and socialist economy. But one of the
most prominent differences that I noticed was that in a socialist economy is that most major
businesses are owned by the government so that the profits can be more evenly redistributed to the
public. The capitalist free market allows private ownership of major businesses. The profits in this
market are kept by the owners and shareholders of the company and not redistributed. The capitalist
free market allows the right to own private property; the right to own a business and keep those profits
from that business. This type of market also promotes the freedom of competition between businesses
for innovations, efficiency, and price.

Customizing a personal computer requires a user to be familiar with the most basic input devices and
their functioning. In addition to getting known with input devices, it is also equally important to
inspect the actual usage of one s computer to determine what input devices would be applicable in the
context of its use.
(I) Keyboards
The keyboard is the most well known input device and is used to introduce character and commands
into the system. The connectors on the keyboard have advanced over time from basic serial connectors
to PS2 connectors and the most widely available today are the USB connector and cordless keyboards.
The characters in a keyboard form an XY matrix arrangement of switch elements which are entered to
the system and are identified using a keyboard encoder [2].
The variations in the type of keyboard permit the user to make choices based on preferences. Some of
the latest variations such as the cordless devices had improved the mobility and are more user friendly.
The user has a great opportunity to explore these variations in the market to find perfect fit component

The Extinction, Endangerment, And Captivity Of Endangered...
Should we worry about the extinction, endangerment, and captivity of endangered species? That is the
pressing question that seems to bug all environmentalists and scientists are stressing over, how long
will it take for all of your animals to die out? And is it something we can stop or at least contain
meanwhile we are trying to find the long term solution for.
Can we prevent this from happening all together? Or is it far too late to save our species that are dying
out? We should worry about the extinction, endangerment and captivity of endangered species because
every animal is vital to their own ecosystems and keeps everything balanced.
Without balance, surely all of the ecosystems will collapse in on itself. What is a species? What
exactly is an endangered species? What is an extinct species? How have these species come to the
point of becoming endangered or extinct? What can we do to save the endangered species that are near
extinction? Can we actually do anything to save these species, or is it a lost cause? Why should I care?
Most people do not know the answer to many of those questions. As much attention as this subject
gets from environmental groups and agencies, it gets just as much ignoring by the general public.
Many people feel compelled to help or contribute; yet few seldom do carry out their intentions. This is
a very serious subject that needs to receive immediate and full attention from the general public. Only
they can truly make a difference. The concept

Gay Justice In Plato s Encouragement For Gay Rights
Plato s Encouragement for Gay Rights
In Plato s Republic, several competing explanations of justice are offered. First, we hear
Thrasymachus s account of justice in Book I, as being the advantage of the stronger. We then receive
Glaucon s explanation of justice in Book II: the agreement between men to act just in order to avoid
the pain of being on the receiving end of an unjust act. Finally, Socrates provides us with the best
definition of justice, saying that justice is the result of three specific classes performing their function
within a city in order for the collaboration to conclude in self sufficiency. Socrates s definition of
justice outshines those of Thrasymachus and Glaucon because he takes into account that not every
person is the same, but everyone is equal. Socrates s refutations of both Thrasymachus and Glaucon
help completely shape his argument of what justice is when it comes to Book 4. Socrates made his
definition of justice general enough to where it accounted for everyone in the city. As long as
everyone performed the duty they were naturally capable of, they were just.
I am taking three explanations of justice mentioned in Plato s Republic to talk about the injustice
toward the gay community and my personal encounter of the unjust society with being seriously
involved with a woman of color. Ever since I was little, I knew I was attracted to the same sex, but I
remained too afraid to act on my feelings. I desperately desired to be accepted and considered

Research Paper On Secondhand Smokers
Smoking is harmful to the smoker and anyone around them, including your baby. The health problems
that are associated with smoke inhalation range from low birthweight to death. When a child dies due
to unexpected reasons, we call it SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Unfortunately, there are no
signs or symptoms associated with SIDS but removing cigarette smoke can reduce the risk upwards
80%.
The dangers of cigarette smoke does not end with the smoker. In fact, there are two separate types of
exposure; second and third hand. Secondhand exposure occurs when someone else breaths in air
released from the cigarette.
Since 1964 approximately 2.5 million non smokers have died from problems associated with
secondhand smoke. Studies have shown that secondhand smoke affects over a million children
everyday. Some of the dangers associated with this exposure include ear infections, respiratory
problems and tooth decay. In fact, many smokers believe that smoking outside can prevent this
exposure, when in all actuality it does not. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For many people third hand smoke is seen more than secondhand smoke. Third hand smoke is the
residual nicotine and unthought of chemicals that stick around. This smoke can build up on hair, skin,
furniture, curtains, walls, and so much more. This shows us that touch, inhalation, and ingestion are all
ways someone can be affected by cigarettes. The worst thing is normal cleaning products will not
touch it. So how does one protect those around them? They create a smoke free environment and stick
to it!
Smoking affects not only yourself but others around you including your pets. Research has shown that
secondhand smoke exposure can lead to cancer, allergies, and respiratory problems like lung cancer.
Ultimately, leaving those innocent animals in as much risk as their human

Market Orientation
Marketing can be define as the process of creating, distributing, promotion and pricing goods, services
and ideas to facilitate satisfying exchange relationships with customers in a dynamic environment
(Pride et al. 2007). Marketing concept shows an organisation always try to provide goods and services
to satisfy consumers needs and wants. It may help the organisation to achieve their goals. The
evolution of marketing concept is from production orientation to sales orientation, continuously it

So, when all departments contribute together to create value for consumers, the process will become
more effective and efficient while the products quality will increase (Slater Narver March April 1994).
In addition, the employees should be treated as the assets of a company. This is because employees are
always the one who have interaction with the customers. So, some big and success organisation like
Walt Disney gives a staff training before they interact with customers (McChesney July 1997).
The statement shows market orientation focusing on customers is sufficient for business success . This
is not a statement that can be agreed by all marketers. Although customers will always be the main
focus for all company, but once a company did not pay attention with what their competitors do, and
confirm is the company interfunctional always going smoothly, the company can being success in
short term, but for a long term business, it will always facing some problem. For an example, Johnson
Johnson is a well known health care product. The successful reason of Johnson Johnson can be found
in their credo.
They care with their products quality but at the same time they also care about their cost to maintain
their price at a reasonable level. Besides, they also care about their employees. They make sure that

Total Quality Management At Kiichiro Toyoda
The main pillars in the model resemble the total quality control or total quality management of the
company that can best be summarized in this pyramid illustration.
Total quality management means that everyone is involved in continuously refining the service to
customers with data and profound knowledge. Kiichiro Toyoda made customers a huge priority in his
theory. The base of the pyramid consisted of the costs of gaining quality, processing services, testing,
tools, and prevention. The second level of the pyramid is involvement, which examines the rewards,
acknowledgment, training, empowerment, and partnerships within the company. The third level is
leadership that deals with talks about the ownership, management support, and the corporation s
mission plan. The next level is culture, which explains the values and continuous improvement made
by the employees. Finally the top of the pyramid is total quality management, which encompasses the
main goal of being a customer driven company. Toyoda s primary viewpoints in his system embrace
the theories of just in time and Jidoka. Just in time (JIT) focuses on productivity improvement with the
main idea being, making only what is needed, when it is needed, and in the amount needed . The main
goal for JIT was to effectively build a car within the shortest possible amount of time by obeying four
guidelines. The first rule states that when the first order is established it must be brought to the start of

Analysis Of Cesar Chavez s Wrath Of The Grapes Boycott
Cesar Chavez addresses a speech that marks history known as the Wrath of the Grapes Boycott, 1986
in which he expresses his feelings towards farmwork and the worth of humanity. Cesar Chavez main
argument was to regulate the use of pesticides in the agricultural industry. The pesticides that were
being used in the farms were detrimental to the health of many of the laborers. They polluted the air,
water, earth and the health of the people. In no way was this beneficial to anyone s health. Chavez
objective was to boycott the grapes and show the agricultural industry that they deserved to be treated
better. Chavez speech was meaningful because he was one of the first mexican american leader who

Later Chavez became a national leader and resigned in 1962 to devote his time to farm laborers (
Cesar Chavez ). During this period Chavez encountered the conditions that he would dedicate his life
to changing: wretched migrant camps, corrupt labor contractors, meager wages for backbreaking
work, bitter racism (Cesar Chavez). One of biggest factors was the use of pesticides which was
harming the health of the farm workers.
This was motivation for Chavez to rise up and do something for the farmworkers. The pesticides that
were being used were harmful to the workers. This addresses the credibility of being a first hand
witness because of pesticide use. In that same year Cesar Chavez founded the National Farm Workers
Association that later became United Farm Workers ( The Story Of Cesar Chavez ). Chavez informed
the people of the working conditions and the bad pay. Chavez strategy was to have non violent
marches, strikes and fasts. He encouraged the Farm Workers be be nonviolent and do things right. The
conditions they were working in where harmful to their health because of the pesticides. The marches,
strikes, and fasts led to a success in the grape boycott In 1970. Table grape growers at long last signed
their first union contracts granting workers better pay, benefits and protection (Kim). But 20 years
later the fight started again. This led for to a second boycott

The Great Achilles
The Great Achilles, great for his passion, skills in the art of war, however, something eerily stands of
in his almost dominating, charismatic character. His wrath is that of none. The merciless Achilles,
why? Why would the poet choose to focus on the wrath of Achilles more than anything in The Illiad?
From his apparent distain towards Agamemnon, to his seething anger towards the Gods, leading to the
gut wrenching revenge inflicted upon Hector, it is clear as day that Achilles s wrath is one of the most
highlighted attributes of any character in English language today. You may feel as though your

Conductive Hearing Loss Research Paper
Conductive hearing loss is when there is a problem with the ear canal, ear drum, or middle ear. When
there are problems in the middle ear it s from an issue with the ossicles (malleus, incus, and stapes).
There are several types of causes that can produce conductive hearing loss; deformation of outer ear,
ear canal, or middle ear, fluid in the middle ear, ear infection, allergies, bad Eustachian tube function,
perforated eardrum, benign tumors, impacted earwax, and Otosclerosis (Hearing Loss Association of
America). In any of these cases, conductive hearing loss affects the brain by not allowing the inner ear
transduce the sound waves into neural signals. The brain cannot receive the signals because the
stimulation of sound is being blocked or severely reduced by any of the reasons given above. The
brain is either receiving little to no neurological signals and the brain does not like to be bored (Wolfe,
Kluender, Levi, 2015).
The most common reason conductive hearing loss occurs is otitis media. Otitis media is a buildup of

Infections are treated with antibiotics or other antifungal medication. Chronic ear infections, fluid in
the middle ear, and the benign tumors are corrected with surgery. When conductive hearing loss is
caused by head trauma surgery is also used to correct the damage in the middle ear structures (Hearing

from impacted earwax. As we age, ear wax becomes drier and sticker. This makes it more likely for
the ear wax to build up and become impacted. When this occurs, your hearing will become muffled
because the ear canal is blocked and cannot receive the sound waves as well. This can be treated by

Not all teenagers will be rude or disrespectful, but some disrespect is a normal part of teenage growth

independence is a key part of growing up.

The main reason that made the teenagers today different from before is the influence of technology.
Back then there were no high tech gadgets. Not like today that we are exposed to many things good or
bad. We have the internet, media, and technology. They don t have that before. We can say that

The searching and purchasing of goods affects the psychological make up a person. Consumerism is

well enough to take care of yourself for several days after the procedure. While you ll be in the
hospital a few days, once you ve recovered from the actual surgery, you will be discharged to recover
in a nursing facility or at home. If you don t have family to help you, hiring home health care will
allow you to return home to your familiar surroundings to recuperate. Here why a home health care
service is beneficial.
Supervise Medications
You ll be in pain after your knee surgery, and you ll probably be sent home on pain medications to
keep you comfortable. If the medications make you groggy, you may develop irregular sleeping
patterns that interfere with taking other medications on schedule. If you need to take antibiotics or
medications for a condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure, you need to take the drugs on
time. A home health nurse or aide will make sure you take your medications on time. He or she can
also supervise your medications to make sure you take the right dosage since you may have fuzzy
thinking due to pain and narcotic medications.
Encourage Exercise ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You may have to go to a physical therapy clinic periodically for treatments, but you ll also be expected
to exercise every day at home, even if you re in pain. If you are at home alone, you may become lax

longer. A home health aid will encourage you to do exercises like you are instructed, and will inform
your physical therapist if you can t or won t do them. This helps prevent complications that slow
recovery and reduce range of motion in your

Rhetorical Analysis Of Kentucky Fried Chicken
Kentucky fried chicken, also known as KFC, have made many commercials over time. This analysis is
on a specific old commercial, sadly of unknown age, but probably from around 1950 1960. The
commercial in question is found on YouTube, and it s made in USA. KFC is a fast food chain that sells
fried chicken, amongst other things, and is especially popular is the US.
To summarize the commercial it starts with a few women being displayed, all thinking about what to
serve for dinner. Luckily Colonel Sanders has the answer, they show a clip from one of the many
KFCs in the country and show the chicken being made. A family then sits down and happily enjoys a
meal of Kentucky fried chicken and at the end of the clip, a special two for one price is ... Show more

The fact that they have a special price is great, but just putting a picture on the screen is not what we
want to see. As mentioned before, the music is suiting to the commercial, however it hasn t any
excitement to it. In the whole, the clip has an old feel to it, in a negative way. It is an old commercial,
which makes it rather obvious that it will look old, but that part is not appreciated by everyone today.
There are a few things that could be modified to make it better, for example the special price. To make
it more interesting, it should be moving after a few seconds, for instance display someone enjoying the
two for one meal. The ancient feeling is a bit hard to remove without remaking the entire commercial
today, but maybe that s a good thing. This commercial isn t like the rest and perhaps that s what people
like about it. If I received the chance to make some small adjustments I would probably start with
finding them a catchphrase.
To wrap it all up, KFC has really succeeded with this commercial, it s convincing and looks delicious.
There is a slight problem though, I m a vegetarian, therefore I won t buy the product. I also happen to
know the truth behind the meat industry and do not wish to support it. My opinions however, do not
have anything to do with the commercial, and if I wasn t aware of all this, I would probably buy the

Effects of Strip Mining on the Appalachian Environment Essay
Coal mining, in particular, strip mining has become the latest casualty of the growing green movement
in the United States. What is strip mining? Encyclopædia Britannica Online defines strip mining as the
removal of vegetation, soil, and rock above a layer of coal, followed by the removal of the coal itself (
strip ). Most Americans don t realize the impact this material of biological origin that can be used as a
source of energy ( fossil ), or fossil fuel, has on their everyday lives or the nation s economy.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the mining industry directly employs some
fifty thousand Americans with nearly half that number working in the more specific field of strip

conducting studies in the fields of biology, environmental studies, and renewable sources. According
to Harper, the change in mineral content of land affected by surface mining prohibits growth of
indigenous plant life and allows foreign plant life to invade, changing the areas ecosystem (Harper).
Water contamination is the next major concern of environmental groups. The Environmental
Protection Agency, the governmental regulatory agency created in 1970 to manage the enforcement of
environmental policy, states its concerns in a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 2009
(United). Specifically addressing mines in West Virginia and Kentucky, the EPA expressed serious
concerns over water pollution from strip mining ( EPA ). The rupture of an ash dike at the Tennessee
Valley Authority s Kingston Fossil Plant in Roane County, TN on December 22, 2008 granted
credibility to the EPA s concerns. In an article published by in Environmental Health Perspectives,

Current Open Visitation Practices Within The Critical Care...
Introduction. The introduction will provide a contextual overview of the current open visitation
practices within the critical care setting. The introduction will begin by highlighting the American
Association of Critical Care Nurses and Canadian Association of Critical Care Nurses support for
open visitation practices and include the argument that unrestrictive family presences is indicative of
patient and family centered care. Next, the barriers that prevent open visitation and the implications
for practice will be acknowledged. The main barriers preventing open visitation that will be briefly
introduced (a detailed discussion will occur in the later portion of the text), and include skewed
nursing perceptions, gaps in knowledge about the beneficial effects of unrestrictive family presence,
and lack of formal visitation policies. It will be argued that the main implication for practice is
decreased patient and family satisfaction resulting from incongruent visitation practices. Finally, the
solution of educating nurses about the benefits of an open visitation policy on patients and families
will be proposed. Rationale for the solution will be provided. Purpose statement and aims. The
introduction will provide context for the following purpose statement: the purpose of this review
article is to gain a better understanding of how critical care patients and families can benefit from open
visitation policies. The review article aims to answer the following three

Description Of The s Exchange Principle
Introduction Locard s exchange principle states that every contact leaves a trace indicating that trace
evidence left by the perpetrator will always be found in the scene of crime (1). These trace evidence
include hair follicles, to sweat, to skin cells and footwear impression, etc. They are valuable
information that can incriminate a person and enable the law to carry out appropriate punishment. The
value of these evidence will however decrease if they are not treated or processed appropriately (2).
Footwear impressions are marks made by the outer surface of the sole of a footwear (outsole for
shoes) (3). These marks are distinctive patterns that belong to specific shoe types and manufacturers
(2,3). Therefore, an impression that found at a crime scene can be used to identify the shoe type and or
specific shoe. Footwear impression identification is based on matching random individual wear
characteristics formed on the shoe by its wearer during its life (2,3). Therefore, footwear impression
analysis can be proven difficult due to the large number of footwear outsole pattern designs (2,3).
These impressions form when the footwear is pressed on a surface and the outsole pattern is
transferred onto that surface (2, 3). Footwear impressions are classed into two main groups, two
dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D). The 3D prints are those that are found on substrates
such as snow or mud while 2D prints are those formed on floors or carpets (3). Useful

Gay cites Bill Cosby and Don Lemon to illustrate this problem. Bill Cosby had long been respected
and often seen as a father figure too, in the black community. At a 2004 NAACP ceremony, Cosby
made a similar speech to his op ed for the New York Post, admonishing the working class black
community and essentially blaming them for their financial dilemmas, dubbed as the Pound Cake
Speech . Don Lemon is the second special case cited; Lemon attempts to shame black men for sagging
their pants by making a farfetched claim that the act is linked to prison homosexual intercourse.
Lemon is a gay black man but still, through his views, shows that he sees the white heterosexual male
as the cultural ideal. The rest of Lemon s comments reiterate the same dialogue of respectability
politics Cosby used, that if black people worked harder and presented themselves better they would
gain acceptance from White America. These black men, like many other black people, have bought
into this same If one then all logical fallacy about racial oppression; that if they managed to bypass

Respectability politics is a form of denial, to rationalize and justify racial prejudice and oppression.
Gay notes that respectability politics completely overlook institutional racism and the ways in which
the education system, the social welfare system, and the justice system only reinforce many of the
problems the black community faces. Gay (pp.

Digging Seamus Heaney Analysis
The poem Digging, is an explorative revelation into the identity of the poet, Seamus Heaney. The
poem reflects upon the author s journey to veer from but ultimately honor his rich family traditions.
The author s family, one of dedicated potato and turf diggers, pass on the ideals of commitment and
diligence through their work from generation to generation. Seamus Heaney, the first man in the past
three generations has chosen not to dig in such a way. Rather, Heaney trades the family spade in for an
ink pen. Through the symbolism of the poet s pen to record the memories of his father and
grandfather, Heaney proves that one s identity is not defined by heritage, but rather by interests and
strengths. The author first introduces his pen as symbolic of discovering his personal identity despite
the expectations of heritage when he says, Between my finger and my thumb/ The squat pen rests;
snug as a gun. (Heaney 1). This line is suggestive that the author did not chose his as a writer identity
for himself, rather it was destined for him. Heaney describes the pen as resting between his finger and
thumb rather than his hand holding the pen. This word choice gives a sense of greater power to the
pen rather than his hand. The pen in this case is symbolic of the notion that the author s passion and
strength in writing was destined for him in such a way that heritage and tradition could not sway the
course of his life. The author further solidifies that it is his destiny to embrace his identity as a writer
when he mentions, The squat pen rests; snug as a gun. (Heaney 1). The image of the gun being snug
resting in the author s hand is suggestive that the pen belongs in his hand, and fits well. The
symbolism of the pen being snug in the poet s hand is evocative of the author being content with his
decision to be a poet. The reader is comfortable with the idea of the pen being snug in the poet s hand
but the author immediately instills unease in the reader s mind when he says, snug as a gun, (Heaney
1). The poet utilizes this simile to contribute to the symbolism of the pen as the author s quest to verify
his identity. A gun is powerful, permanent, and commands attention. The author uses this simile to

The Impact Of Industrialization And The Impacts Of...
Impacts of Industrialization Industrialization began when Britain was eager to invest money into
creating machinery to make textiles to avoid paying India to export cotton textiles. Since the British
empire had a lot of power and had widespread colonization, they had the money to invest in raw
materials. In the late 1700 s Britain wanted to produce their own cotton textiles, so they began
exporting the raw material, cotton, to make textiles from India. In 1750 s textile mill were created to
be able to produce larger quantities of cotton textiles in a shorter amount of time through the use of
more complex machinery. While India continued to make cotton textiles by hand, Britain no longer
needed cotton from India when the advanced technology allowed for Britain to rapidly produce cotton.
After textile machines were produced, household became urbanized when children needed to travel to
factories in the cities to help produce cotton textiles. Clothes became mass produced after textile mills,
allowed for the clothes to be identically produce in large quantities. Mass production of identical
products causes the prices to drop because the advances in technology reduces the amount of laborers
needed to make the same product. More technological advances revolutionized the work industry,
people were trained to do one task repeatedly, being apart of the assembly line. Families were divided

Population ageing is both a triumph and a challenge (Lim, 2008). With the advances in economics and
medical development as well as better health systems, Singaporeans now are having longer life
expectancy than they used to have in the past. Current research has shown that Singapore is one of the

The health care system within the country has been upgraded to cater to the seniors. This is to provide
a complete and affordable health care system for the elderly. These care systems or places can be
easily accessed, afforded and directed to many different needs faced by the elderly. For example,
building more hospitals so that they can be easily accessible and topping up of the Medisave accounts,
when there is a surplus, for the less well off Singaporeans as the priority (Sadasivan and Osman,
2006).
Research has shown that most seniors will want to live independently. By enabling ageing in place
(Lee, 2009), the government improves the infrastructures, such as the Housing Development Board
(HDB) buildings, and public transport system. These improvements will enable them to move around
freely and easily and they will find it easier to gain ace to public amenities with the elderly friendly
transport system.
From the researches done, it can be seen that the problem of ageing is a norm for economic developed
countries. The shift in age structure will have an effect on the country s economy. However, this
problem can be solved by having policies that benefit both the elderly as well as the country. We are
crafting new policies, improving our infrastructure and developing effective programs to enable older
citizens to lead full and happy lives (Lee, 2009). The government ensures

Orca Captivity Research Paper
Killer whales, otherwise called orcas, are the biggest individuals from the dolphin family and the top

yet for some orcas imprisonment restricts their opportunity and delight in life. It isn t just harming the
physical and psychological wellness of these creatures, but also represents a risk to coaches, yet
individuals keep on profiting from killer whales. In bondage, numerous orcas experience the ill effects

Corporate Branding is Essential for Today s Competative...
In this competitive world, nothing is as certain as uncertainty and nothing are as sustained as change
for any businesses. Strategy building is not as simple as possible for companies and the ground rules
for competition have shifted from predictable markets or stable product range to more dynamic and
globalized ways. The traditional perceptions and applications of branding has been fully dominated by
a product mindset. But changes in the modern era and huge technological developments laid
difficulties in managing realistic product differentiation in the face of duplication and homogenization
of products and services. Changes in the attitudes and mindsets of the customers are also making
markets more complex and competitive in nature. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Accordingly, Hatch and Schultz conceptualized corporate branding in following ways: (a) alignment
between origin and day to day activities of the business (organizational culture); (b) where the
organization aspires to go (strategic vision); (c) all nested in perceptions of who the organization is
(identity). (Schultz et al. 2005, p. 24)
Based in who we are as an organization , a corporate branding focuses on developing the distinctive
features of the organization through managerial and organizational processes. These processes
endeavor to express who the company is as an organization and demonstrate how it is different
compared with its competitors, all the while making this difference relevant and engaging to its
stakeholders. With this said, it is clear that corporate branding is influenced by other disciplines like
organizational theories, Strategies etc, and considered CB as cross disciplinary in nature.
Most of the previous studies are carried by marketing scholars since branding is an extract of
marketing discipline, conceptualization of product branding is purely outside in thinking and
stakeholders are consumers and customers only. The paper tries to describe the movement towards
corporate branding from product branding and can be best quoted as shift from classic branding to
corporate branding . Furthermore, branding literature argues that CB

Forced Migration Essay
In the per modern era, human migration was a well known occurrence that was caused by either force
or willingness of the people. When migration was constituted through force, it was understood to be
through political or economical duress. For instance, political measures unveiling large tax reforms
created unbearable cost of living standards for the poor to survive. Whereas, increased economic
labour created through force, was established for the rich to reap the benefits from majority of the
poor. In essence, this widened the gap of economic dualism by forcing majority of the lower class
people into living standards well below the poverty levels. Evidently, this would cause cultures to

on his people, and in turn they became largely bitter towards him. After his death, massive conflicts

She was persistent, and persistence is a great way to achieve results in the manner needed or wanted.
Because of these qualities combined, she was a motivator. To see the change necessary, others must
see the need for the change and believe in the vision, and Norma motivated them to see that vision of a
better work environment. When the managers promoted Norma Rae to a supervisor position, she
noticed an immediate difference in the relationships she had with the workers. The workers viewed
her as if she was one of the managers who told everyone what and when to do something. Her rapport

Norma quickly realized that the role the management team had in the plant was not what she wanted

Analysis Of Louise Erdrich s Love Medicine Essay
In Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich, many of the characters face expectations for their roles as Native
Americans and as women on their reservation. One of these characters is Lulu, who experiences
shaming because of her traditionalist view of Chippewa life and relationships with many men. She is
continually fueled by a love and passion that guides her to contradict these expectations, often quite
directly, even in the face of community gossip. Throughout the novel, Lulu defies expectations about
Native Americans and her expected role as a woman, especially in relationships. This can be seen in
her reactions to the government s appropriation of their land, against the community s shaming of her
for her many romantic relationships, and ability to lead her family although she is expected to lose
control over her many children. Lulu Lamartine actively fights against the government s appropriation
of Native American land, disagreeing with the idea that it will improve their life and the expectation
that Native Americans will be grateful for the sale. Lulu s ideas about the importance of living on their
own land were first influenced by her family as a young adult. For example, she is told to sing my
songs and then bury me high in a tree, Lulu, where I can see my enemies approach in the government
cars (71). The United States government intervention in the lives of Native Americans is a continued
point of tension throughout her life. Lulu has a distinct distrust of the United

Data Analysis
Identifying an unknown substance can be accomplished with the use of multiple scientific tests.
Conducting these experiments will narrow down the possibilities of the unknown compound. The
number of the unknown substance that I was given was A84841BIR, It posed to be a challenge since I
needed to test three different molecular combinations for this specific substance. Once the number of
moles the in substance was calculated using the ideal gas law, I divided it from the sample mass
number. After vaporizing away the unknown compound, I then concluded that the molarity of my
unknown chemical was 58.93 g/mol. To find my molecular formula I calculated the mass of each
element, then the moles, lastly I took the smallest whole number ratio. Using the molarity calculated I
was able to do some research to get a better understanding of what my unknown chemical could be.
Once I have collected all my data together and researched the Internet for articles relating to
understanding Infa Red spectroscopy, I should be able to make an educated guess upon what my
unknown solution could be.
The first step was to calculate the molecular formula, using the given masses on the combustion
worksheet. Using the ideal gas law, I converted the given grams to moles. The next step was to find
out the amount of oxygen in the combustion, then after more calculations, I was able to plug my value
into the ideal gas law and find the molecular weight. After calculating the molecular formula I

information to that from other groups (a control or comparison group, statewide figures, etc.), to help
draw some conclusions from the data. The point, in terms of your evaluation, is to get an accurate
assessment in order to better understand your work and its effects on those you re concerned with, or
in order to better understand the overall situation. There are two kinds of data you re apt to be working
with, although not all evaluations will necessarily include both. Quantitative data refer to the

How Does William Blake convey his anger in the poem London ?
The poem London by William Blake, relfects his feelings upon the society that he was living in , and
how despreratly it needed help.
Blake thought that all of the poverty and misfortune that was happening on the streets were caused by
the political opression in
London. Blake was angered by what he saw in his homeland as other countries started fighting for
their indipendence and equality whilst his country stayed dormant, eventhough he felt that there was a
serious need for serious action.
Eventhough Blake wasn t a typical romantic writer, he too possesed the same beliefs of fighting for
what one believes in, and the urge to be liberated from the opression of ... Show more content on

Another image that the writer creates, of an opressed scoiety, is the metaphor
mind for ged manacles , this is as the manacles are only forged by the mind thus, it not being real so
therefore anyone can break free from it anytime, but yet they chose to stay in self imprisonment.
The line mind for ged manacles also conveys Blake s anger towards the ignorance of the people in
country as he believed that they could break free from their imaginary prison cells, and fight the
authorities that were causing their poverty, just like in the French
Revolution.
One way that Blake uses to convey his anger on what he sees is through his constant repition on
certain words. In the first stanza,he repeats the word charter d twice. By repeating the word charter d
twice , it places furthur emphasis on the streets and thames being restricted by authority. The word
mark is then also repeated three times in the poem, by doing so, Blake is able to let the reader take
more awearness of the word mark and the story it is associated with, which is the mark of Caine.
Caine was given a black mark on his face by God as he murderd his brother, the mark then branded
him as a sinner. However, eventhough the mark branded him as a sinner, it also protected him from
harm as anyone who harmed Caine was said to be punished with 30 times the damage inflicted upon
him. The story of Caine relates to London in a sense that

Historical Analysis on Factories
How would you feel about being age ten and working twelve hour shifts with dangerous machery. It s
not safe, you re risking your life, and harming yourself. People were tied to those machines. You want
to quit, but you know your family needs the money. Even though you boss sometimes didn t pay you.
Factories are what started the Industrial Era, which started in England. The first factories had
problems, progress, and promises. They weren t perfect, but it lead these people closer to the world we
know today. Since this was the first time people started using the factory system there were some
imperfections. The factories were a new fast way of getting work done. Richard Arkwright created the
first factories. He invented a couple of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Factory owners would arrange deals with local orphanages to hire orphans. The orphans would get
food, shelter, and clothing. Which was not always the best but it was better than nothing. Many
children did not know how to read or write. Their boss would provide them with a little amount of
education. But instead of being taught properly, they had to go work. It s not like they wanted to go
work, they had to. Most families did not have enough to eat. Plus it was common to have a family
with nine brothers and sisters. The new middle class had a different thought of how their children
should spend their days. They would educate their kids, girls would learn to sew, and learn how to
maintain a household. Boys were also educated but they were thought to follow in their father s
footsteps. Now thats the life every kid wanted instead of risking their lives everyday. Back in the
factories young children would assist adult workers. Some of those workers would verbally abuse, or
beat them. The boss would punish you if you came late. For example they would tie a weight to your
neck and make you walk with it for about an hour. That lead to some serious injuries. Whenever a boy
was late he would have to go to the factory naked and put their clothes on there. It was good that
families were getting more money than they use to. And with the help of

Criteria For The Labelling Of Smes
on the criteria set by a particular country. The criteria for the categorization of SMEs can be scaled by
looking at the company s turnover sales, some countries look at the number of employees in the
business and there are countries which perceived SMEs based on mixed criteria. In addition, global
organization entities such as European Commission and World Bank also have their own views on
how to identify SMEs.
The European Commission states that the criterion of the number of staff as the main criterion,
however, introducing a financial criterion is nonetheless a necessary adjunct in order to grasp the real
scale and performance of an enterprise and its position compared to its competitors (European
Commission: 2003, item 4). Figure 1.0 below is an illustration of SMEs definition by the European
Commission.

According to Independent Evaluation Group (2008), the following quantitative criteria to identify
SMEs are incorporated by The World Bank; Total assets in USD, annual sales in USD and number of
employees. A particular business must met the manpower criteria and at least on financial based scale
in order to be defined as SMEs. Figure 1.1 below shows the categorization made by World Bank.

  • 2. The Influence Of Loyalty In The Novel Ship Breaker The dictionary defines the word loyalty as a strong feeling of support or allegiance. Schools across the nation stand every morning, put their hands on their hearts and pledge their loyalty to their country. The novel Ship Breaker is about a young boy named Nailer who works to break ships apart in a futuristic society. His mom died and his father, Richard, became an addict leaving them very poor and reliant on Nailer s income. One day, Nailer is walking the beach with his friend Pima recovering supplies after a hurricane, there they find a massive clipper ship with one survivor inside. The girl inside, Nita, was fleeing capture from her family s enemies and shipwrecked. • 3. Word Accuracy And Word Frequency Essay This study is a conceptualized replication of the Howes and Solomon (1951) experiment investigating word accuracy and word frequency in short duration trials. It is hypothesized that words that appear more often in printed text (easier to access in the lexicon) will be more accurately identified rather than words that appear less commonly. A total of 83 participants in the study were presented with words taken from the Throndike Lorge database. The words were presented for one second with a six second rest in the middle. This was done sixty times and the results suggest a moderate strong relationship between word accuracy and frequency. Though there are multiple factors that may have influenced these results. Introduction Word recognition involves an individual s ability to identify words independently without requiring related words for contextual help. A widely examined topic in the field of cognitive psychology, it deals with understanding printed letters as a word which has been kept in the lexicon. The word frequency effect is important in the recognition of words. It suggests more common words in printed language are easier, faster and more accurate to distinguish than words that appear less frequently. Outlined in their journal article, Howes and Solomon utilized Thorndike Lorge s word count for word frequency and measured the threshold of recognition. They found correlation coefficients of .68 to .75 between word frequency and threshold or duration. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But one of the most prominent differences that I noticed was that in a socialist economy is that most major businesses are owned by the government so that the profits can be more evenly redistributed to the public. The capitalist free market allows private ownership of major businesses. The profits in this market are kept by the owners and shareholders of the company and not redistributed. The capitalist free market allows the right to own private property; the right to own a business and keep those profits from that business. This type of market also promotes the freedom of competition between businesses for innovations, efficiency, and price. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Gay Justice In Plato s Encouragement For Gay Rights Plato s Encouragement for Gay Rights In Plato s Republic, several competing explanations of justice are offered. First, we hear Thrasymachus s account of justice in Book I, as being the advantage of the stronger. We then receive Glaucon s explanation of justice in Book II: the agreement between men to act just in order to avoid the pain of being on the receiving end of an unjust act. Finally, Socrates provides us with the best definition of justice, saying that justice is the result of three specific classes performing their function within a city in order for the collaboration to conclude in self sufficiency. Socrates s definition of justice outshines those of Thrasymachus and Glaucon because he takes into account that not every person is the same, but everyone is equal. Socrates s refutations of both Thrasymachus and Glaucon help completely shape his argument of what justice is when it comes to Book 4. Socrates made his definition of justice general enough to where it accounted for everyone in the city. As long as everyone performed the duty they were naturally capable of, they were just. The fact that they have a special price is great, but just putting a picture on the screen is not what we want to see. As mentioned before, the music is suiting to the commercial, however it hasn t any excitement to it. In the whole, the clip has an old feel to it, in a negative way. It is an old commercial, which makes it rather obvious that it will look old, but that part is not appreciated by everyone today. There are a few things that could be modified to make it better, for example the special price. To make it more interesting, it should be moving after a few seconds, for instance display someone enjoying the two for one meal. The ancient feeling is a bit hard to remove without remaking the entire commercial today, but maybe that s a good thing. This commercial isn t like the rest and perhaps that s what people like about it. If I received the chance to make some small adjustments I would probably start with finding them a catchphrase. To wrap it all up, KFC has really succeeded with this commercial, it s convincing and looks delicious. There is a slight problem though, I m a vegetarian, therefore I won t buy the product. I also happen to know the truth behind the meat industry and do not wish to support it. My opinions however, do not have anything to do with the commercial, and if I wasn t aware of all this, I would probably buy the Kentucky fried ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 25. Effects of Strip Mining on the Appalachian Environment Essay Coal mining, in particular, strip mining has become the latest casualty of the growing green movement in the United States. What is strip mining? Encyclopædia Britannica Online defines strip mining as the removal of vegetation, soil, and rock above a layer of coal, followed by the removal of the coal itself ( strip ). Most Americans don t realize the impact this material of biological origin that can be used as a source of energy ( fossil ), or fossil fuel, has on their everyday lives or the nation s economy. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the mining industry directly employs some fifty thousand Americans with nearly half that number working in the more specific field of strip mining, or mountain top removal ... Since much of strip mined land lacks proper restoration, weather causes further loss of soil and vital nutrients needed for native vegetation to grow. According to Harper, the change in mineral content of land affected by surface mining prohibits growth of indigenous plant life and allows foreign plant life to invade, changing the areas ecosystem (Harper). Water contamination is the next major concern of environmental groups. The Environmental Protection Agency, the governmental regulatory agency created in 1970 to manage the enforcement of environmental policy, states its concerns in a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 2009 (United). Specifically addressing mines in West Virginia and Kentucky, the EPA expressed serious concerns over water pollution from strip mining ( EPA ). The rupture of an ash dike at the Tennessee Valley Authority s Kingston Fossil Plant in Roane County, TN on December 22, 2008 granted credibility to the EPA s concerns. The introduction will provide a contextual overview of the current open visitation practices within the critical care setting. The introduction will begin by highlighting the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and Canadian Association of Critical Care Nurses support for open visitation practices and include the argument that unrestrictive family presences is indicative of patient and family centered care. Next, the barriers that prevent open visitation and the implications for practice will be acknowledged. The main barriers preventing open visitation that will be briefly introduced (a detailed discussion will occur in the later portion of the text), and include skewed nursing perceptions, gaps in knowledge about the beneficial effects of unrestrictive family presence, and lack of formal visitation policies. It will be argued that the main implication for practice is decreased patient and family satisfaction resulting from incongruent visitation practices. Finally, the solution of educating nurses about the benefits of an open visitation policy on patients and families will be proposed. Rationale for the solution will be provided. Purpose statement and aims. The introduction will provide context for the following purpose statement: the purpose of this review article is to gain a better understanding of how critical care patients and families can benefit from open visitation policies. • 27. Description Of The s Exchange Principle Introduction Locard s exchange principle states that every contact leaves a trace indicating that trace evidence left by the perpetrator will always be found in the scene of crime (1). These trace evidence include hair follicles, to sweat, to skin cells and footwear impression, etc. They are valuable information that can incriminate a person and enable the law to carry out appropriate punishment. The value of these evidence will however decrease if they are not treated or processed appropriately (2). Footwear impressions are marks made by the outer surface of the sole of a footwear (outsole for shoes) (3). These marks are distinctive patterns that belong to specific shoe types and manufacturers (2,3). Therefore, an impression that found at a crime scene can be used to identify the shoe type and or specific shoe. Footwear impression identification is based on matching random individual wear characteristics formed on the shoe by its wearer during its life (2,3). Therefore, footwear impression analysis can be proven difficult due to the large number of footwear outsole pattern designs (2,3). These impressions form when the footwear is pressed on a surface and the outsole pattern is transferred onto that surface (2, 3). Footwear impressions are classed into two main groups, two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D). The 3D prints are those that are found on substrates such as snow or mud while 2D prints are those formed on floors or carpets (3). Useful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At a 2004 NAACP ceremony, Cosby made a similar speech to his op ed for the New York Post, admonishing the working class black community and essentially blaming them for their financial dilemmas, dubbed as the Pound Cake Speech . Don Lemon is the second special case cited; Lemon attempts to shame black men for sagging their pants by making a farfetched claim that the act is linked to prison homosexual intercourse. Lemon is a gay black man but still, through his views, shows that he sees the white heterosexual male as the cultural ideal. • 30. Digging Seamus Heaney Analysis The poem Digging, is an explorative revelation into the identity of the poet, Seamus Heaney. The poem reflects upon the author s journey to veer from but ultimately honor his rich family traditions. The author s family, one of dedicated potato and turf diggers, pass on the ideals of commitment and diligence through their work from generation to generation. Seamus Heaney, the first man in the past three generations has chosen not to dig in such a way. Rather, Heaney trades the family spade in for an ink pen. Through the symbolism of the poet s pen to record the memories of his father and grandfather, Heaney proves that one s identity is not defined by heritage, but rather by interests and strengths. The author first introduces his pen as symbolic of discovering his personal identity despite the expectations of heritage when he says, Between my finger and my thumb/ The squat pen rests; snug as a gun. (Heaney 1). This line is suggestive that the author did not chose his as a writer identity for himself, rather it was destined for him. Heaney describes the pen as resting between his finger and thumb rather than his hand holding the pen. This word choice gives a sense of greater power to the pen rather than his hand. The pen in this case is symbolic of the notion that the author s passion and strength in writing was destined for him in such a way that heritage and tradition could not sway the course of his life. The author further solidifies that it is his destiny to embrace his identity as a writer when he mentions, The squat pen rests; snug as a gun. (Heaney 1). The image of the gun being snug resting in the author s hand is suggestive that the pen belongs in his hand, and fits well. The symbolism of the pen being snug in the poet s hand is evocative of the author being content with his decision to be a poet. The reader is comfortable with the idea of the pen being snug in the poet s hand but the author immediately instills unease in the reader s mind when he says, snug as a gun, (Heaney 1). The poet utilizes this simile to contribute to the symbolism of the pen as the author s quest to verify his identity. A gun is powerful, permanent, and commands attention. • 32. The Impact Of Industrialization And The Impacts Of... Impacts of Industrialization Industrialization began when Britain was eager to invest money into creating machinery to make textiles to avoid paying India to export cotton textiles. Since the British empire had a lot of power and had widespread colonization, they had the money to invest in raw materials. In the late 1700 s Britain wanted to produce their own cotton textiles, so they began exporting the raw material, cotton, to make textiles from India. In 1750 s textile mill were created to be able to produce larger quantities of cotton textiles in a shorter amount of time through the use of more complex machinery. While India continued to make cotton textiles by hand, Britain no longer needed cotton from India when the advanced technology allowed for Britain to rapidly produce cotton. After textile machines were produced, household became urbanized when children needed to travel to factories in the cities to help produce cotton textiles. Clothes became mass produced after textile mills, allowed for the clothes to be identically produce in large quantities. Mass production of identical products causes the prices to drop because the advances in technology reduces the amount of laborers needed to make the same product. More technological advances revolutionized the work industry, people were trained to do one task repeatedly, being apart of the assembly line. Analysis Of Louise Erdrich s Love Medicine Essay In Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich, many of the characters face expectations for their roles as Native Americans and as women on their reservation. One of these characters is Lulu, who experiences shaming because of her traditionalist view of Chippewa life and relationships with many men. She is continually fueled by a love and passion that guides her to contradict these expectations, often quite directly, even in the face of community gossip. Throughout the novel, Lulu defies expectations about Native Americans and her expected role as a woman, especially in relationships. This can be seen in her reactions to the government s appropriation of their land, against the community s shaming of her for her many romantic relationships, and ability to lead her family although she is expected to lose control over her many children. Lulu Lamartine actively fights against the government s appropriation of Native American land, disagreeing with the idea that it will improve their life and the expectation that Native Americans will be grateful for the sale. Lulu s ideas about the importance of living on their own land were first influenced by her family as a young adult. For example, she is told to sing my songs and then bury me high in a tree, Lulu, where I can see my enemies approach in the government cars (71). The line mind for ged manacles also conveys Blake s anger towards the ignorance of the people in country as he believed that they could break free from their imaginary prison cells, and fight the authorities that were causing their poverty, just like in the French Revolution. One way that Blake uses to convey his anger on what he sees is through his constant repition on certain words. In the first stanza,he repeats the word charter d twice.
