Martin Luther King Essay
Crafting an essay on the subject of Martin Luther King is a task that demands both research
prowess and the ability to delve into the complexities of the civil rights movement. It requires a
thorough understanding of King's life, his pivotal role in advocating for racial equality, and the
impact he had on American society. The challenge lies not just in presenting historical facts, but
in weaving a narrative that captures the essence of his philosophy and the struggles he faced.
One must navigate through the plethora of available information, distinguishing between primary
and secondary sources, and critically evaluating their reliability. Analyzing King's speeches,
writings, and the socio-political climate of the time is imperative to contextualize his
contributions accurately. The essay should not merely recount events but delve into the nuances
of his ideology, exploring themes of nonviolent resistance, civil disobedience, and the dream of a
racially harmonious America.
Moreover, addressing the broader impact of Martin Luther King on the civil rights movement
and society at large requires a nuanced perspective. It involves delving into the lasting

additional layer of complexity.

Punchbowl Falls
Growing up in the Pacific Northwest of the United States has ignited my passion
for hiking and being in nature. For a greater portion of my life, I have lived next to
Multnomah Falls and all the beautiful hikes that surround it. My absolute favorite
hike in the Columbia River Gorge area is Punchbowl Falls. It is 5 miles and leads
to a beautiful waterfall that people can swim in. Conquering this hike takes almost
a full day as it is mostly uphill and once people finally find the waterfall, they do
not ever wish to leave. Most of it is on a cliff s edge, which can be intimidating, but
as people hike higher, they are able to see incredible views of thousands of trees
that never end. If that isn t beautiful enough, the site of the waterfall is breathtaking.
My first time going on this hike, I could hear the water of the waterfall roaring,
much like my excitement to capture in its beauty. When I witnessed the waterfall, I
noticed it runs off about a fifty foot cliff and I saw others jumping off it. After many
minutes of standing on the cliff s edge, I finally gained enough courage to jump.
Jumping into freezing cold water is extremely exhilarating, and I fell in love with
Punchbowl based off this experience.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Witnessing nature is captivating as I am able to examine beauty everywhere I
look. Breathing in the fresh air surrounding me makes me feel as if I am breathing
out all my troubles. Jumping into a waterfall of freezing cold water makes me feel
as though I am truly alive and not just existing. Nature is an escape from the real
world and it is where I turn when I need to distract myself from reality. Being able to
witness Heavenly Father s creations is a blessing and I am grateful I could grow up
in a place where a plethora of magnificent hikes is only a 20 minute drive
Zoos, Aquariums And Museum
Nowadays, it is hard to find a person who has never been in a zoo, aquarium or
museum. Since childhood we find it fancy to observe animals and exhibits, but
sometimes even adults do not understand what the real value of zoos, aquariums and
museums is.
First, it is necessary to explain the main goals of these institutions which are to
increase knowledge about the surrounding, to learn about conservation related
behavior and to build conservation principles. In order to fulfill these goals, modern
zoos, aquariums and museums provide a huge range of possibilities such as arranging
specific exhibitions ensuring visual experiences, presenting new information and
joining the conservation organization (Yalowitz).
In addition, the information given in an exhibition is not as memorable as it seems at
first. After a week or more people are tend to forget the main message of the
presentation. Thus, it means that zoos, aquariums and museums have to find a way
how to increase an impact during people s visits.
This is further shown by the fact that the follow up visitors gain more knowledge
than the first time ones. In other words, the follow up visitors are more likely to ...

Some of them want to observe exhibits to bate his or her curiosity, others have
hobby passions on the shown topic and would like to gain a new experience. What
is also worth mentioning is that information presented in an exposure has to
comprise needs of every visitor, and zoos, aquariums and museums have to make it
easy for everyone to understand and comprehend all that was shown and said. Other
aspects such as age, gender, social group, ethnicity and basic level of knowledge
should also be taken into consideration. Besides, another argument is that institutions
should also provide programs for distinguishing motivations in order to fulfill one s
expectations and to increase long term knowledge (why zoos

Swot Analysis Of Ford
4. Threats
Economic Instability Because of the label of a luxury good the stability of the
economy is detrimental to the increase of sales. Economic instability is sometimes
linked to political instability and in the international market both are highly volatile.
Large Number of Competitors There are many competitors in the automotive industry
and many of them are ranked higher than Ford, in recent polls, due to the growing
global reach and recognition by consumers.
Political instability With Ford s dependencies on foreign markets due to expansion
beyond the capacity of the U.S. market, political stability in markets outside the U.S.
could pose a risk for Ford. Recently relationships between the U.S. and Mexico has
weakened and according to Ford s annual report employee voluntary resignation is
among the highest in Mexico and China.
Highly Competitive Market As stated earlier, the market that Ford operates in is
highly competitive and Ford must maintain its ability to analyze what competitors are
doing so it can stay competitive and gain more market share.
Growth of Competitors With growing competition in the market, Ford must find a
way to regain its market share and rebound from the recent decline from the top 3 in
the industry. Toyota is leading the way as is Renault Nissan per recent polls, Ford
has dropped to fifth in World automobile production. Growth in alternative mobility
platforms has also allowed for new competitors to enter the market such as Tesla. As
Catch 22 Character Analysis
John Yossarian, the protagonist of Catch 22, is an important character since helps
the reader makes sense of the ludricious bureaucracy in power. More times than not,
Yossarian serves as the voice of reason, attempting to correct his fellow soldiers
irrational ideas. In addition, he is non complacent, often questioning his officers and
poking holes in their logic. Heller uses Yossarianfor this role to highlight the flaws of
the military, such as their shoddy reasoning and lack of empathy for their soldiers.
Despite being one of the more sane soldiers, Yossarian wishes to leave the military
more than anything else. He finds the war dangerous and a risk for his own sake.
Moreover, this stresses another theme in the novel, survival instincts are first and
foremost drives of humans. At the end of the day, no matter how kind and
thoughtful one, they will always look at out for their best interest first. However,
near the end of the novel, Yossarian breaks his mold when he stays loyal to his
squadron. When offered the choice to leave the military in turn for abandoning the
men in his squadron, he vehemently refuses. This shows while humans may be
capable of great lengths of selfishness, they are also capable of good
Doc Daneeka, partially like Yossarian, represents the selfishness of humanity.
Despite being a doctor, Daneeka only ever worries about his own health, ignoring his

U.s. Foreign Policy Decisions
everyone, not only because of threats of terrorist attacks or the danger of war, but
for far more mundane reasons. (Kaufman pg. 3). Here Kaufman begins to unravel
the differences between these two types of foreign policy. The extraordinary are the
issues surrounding war, terrorist attacks, cyber warfare. The mundane, is as simple
as the labels on your clothing, but as complex as who is allowed entry into the U.S..
These topics do not elicit as much of a reaction, because as Kaufman argues the
foreign policydecisions that most people know about and follow closely are those
that are extraordinary because the stakes appear to be so high. (Kaufman pg. 3).
Although there appears to be strong evidence suggesting the importance of foreign
policy, that is not reflected in American culture.
As noted above, this is strongly related to the perceived value of the issues. In
today s world we have more access to information than we have ever had in the
history of the world. One would think this would lead to a more informed and
educated public. While this could be the case in some areas of study, it is not the
case in foreign policy. Mead addresses some of Americans views and the role they
play throughout history. He makes several strong and persuasive declarations about
American foreign policy stating one of the most remarkable features of
contemporary U.S. foreign policy is the ignorance of and contempt for the country s
own foreign policy he goes on to add lack of interest is
Narrative Essay On Lif Life
...do you think we would be able to just borrow a little something..just until I get
paid. I ll give it right back. I hear my mother in the restroom of our one bed motel
room, faintly making phone call after phone call to every relative or family friend
that she could flip to in her black book, pleading for just enough money to pay for
our stay in the motel for another week. She made this phone call every week that
her paycheck went to buying clothes for me for school, buying an excess of
groceries because we had gone so long without food, bus fare for when our tried
and true car went in for maintenance or other out of the budget expenses. We didn t
have much and being just the two of us, we struggled severely. I look outside the
motel window, at the seedy parking lot littered with trash, at the uninviting people
loitering, at the dimly lit motel sign with certain letters just barely illuminating and
I hopelessly and silently cried, wondering just how long our circumstances would
persist. Why did I have to be the homeless child? Why couldn t I live a normal life in

The Wife And The Broken Heart
The two stories, The Wife and The Broken Heart , were given to this literature
circle to discuss and discover the stories plots and hidden meanings. Kira was our
leader and illustrator; Isaiah was our researcher; Rainena was our reader; Hollis
was our person who helped those who needed help. The stories had a similar theme,
love, and how it affects those who have experienced love at its greatest measure. The
Broken Heart was a short storyrevolving around the plot of disappointed love. It
was a comparison between the love of men and women. Men s love is based on their
interest and ambition, seeking fame or fortune or dominion. As a result, they are not
as attached as women. Unlike men, women are more in touch with their feelings.
They are secluded and fixed on one person. Therefore, when women experience
heartbreak, their whole personality can be changed from their original characteristics.

The Wife was part of the original Sketchbook and after a month, The Broken Heart
was installed into the book. Even with a month in between these two stories, they
shared qualities that were identical and also biblical. Both stories touched on two
types of love that everyone will experience in their lives. They had lessons
interwoven into the words that are waiting for us to learn from. Luke 16:13 says,
No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the
other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God
and mammon. Like the woman from The Broken Heart , our hearts should be only
serving one master and that is God alone. The Wife is an example of the famous
verses about love in 1 Corinthians 13 which talk about the attributes of love. Love is
not only an emotion but a concept that cannot be defined by anything else, except

Essay on Two Ageing Theories and Examples
There are two theories of ageing. The disengagement theory is when the elderly
unfortunately start to give up with activities or social life. They become withdrawn
from society. This is when you disengage from any way of contact or interaction. The
reason for disengagement theory may be because physical functions deteriorate.
There are three phases of disengagement theory. These are shrinkage of life space is
when you are not working or have no contact with friends and family. You don t get
to meet new people. You decide not to take up any hobbies or activities. The second
phase is increased individuality. This is when you become independent and what
others do does not matter to you. The third phase is acceptance. You start to accept...

The activity theory is when you will carry on with any activities or interests that you
will have. This is to stay physically and mentally active. You may start to disengage
with some things such as leaving job or leaving family however you will start new
activities that you may have an interest in. A theory is an explanationor reason for that
fact.
In 1966 Bromley argued that people do engagement but need to remain active in
order to prevent disengagement to cause major problems. He said that it is important
to have an interest in some activities because being disengaged can have an effect on
an individual and lead them to isolation and depression.
A theory of ageing is a explanation or reason for the natural cause of ageing. It
explains the changes a person goes through when they age. Theories can be proved
or sided by laws and facts and tested hypotheses.
Disengagement theory
An example of disengagement theory is when a pensioner quits his job or does not
take up any hobbies. They may just stay at home and not even socialise with friends
and family.
Advantages of the disengagement theory are people can start to rest and not worry
about anything. They become independent and take their mind off things. This may
be because they are understandable that it is the final stages of life so they may want
to be independent and not do anything. However there are many disadvantages of the
disengagement theory. When a person disengages, they are

The Issues Regarding The Rights Of Women Essay
The issues regarding the rights of women, is something all of us have been
exposed to. Even if it does not have a direct effect on us, we are still able to watch
how it shapes the people around us and our society as a whole. Between men and
women there are obvious differences including their roles in society, and their
behavior, however, there have been significant changes in gender roles over the
years, which has made a positive impact on the nation. But where did it all start?
Let s go back one hundred and forty years; back to 1875. By this time, Elizabeth
Stanton and Susan B. Anthony had established the National Woman Suffrage
Organization to achieve women s rights to vote by means of a new amendment.
About six years down the road, another feministic issue arose. Feminists began to
debate over how to achieve liberty for married women. In an essay written by
Stanton, she demands that equality should be extended into the private life. True
independence for married women forced them to deal with an immense number of
divorce laws. In order for a woman to cease a marriage, she would be required to
provide proof of adultery, desertion, or extreme abuse. Of course this brought in
quite a bit of female supporters who agreed that women should be free to choose
whether they stay or leave. Surprisingly, only a small number of men sympathized
with the female perspective of feeling trapped in their own marriage (Primary
Sources p.14). According to Stanton, the reason for the lack of
Romantic Emotionism In Alexander Pope s The Rape Of
The Lock
Most of life s moments have little import. Each day often screams no more of
significance than the day preceding. There are a few moments throughout life that
manage to contain, within themselves, the power to change the course of one s life,
but more often than not, the moments we give importance to are fairly trivial events,
changing or altering nothing more than any other day. We find that those more
common moments are created by culture, cultivated in a society that believes that
something about a day or a time though nothing significant changes, like birthdays
demarking a specific time on a continuum makes it special. This same brand of
cultural elevation affects physical features and infrequent, though insignificant still,
actions. Alexander Popes The Rape of the Lockcharts that influence in society and,
with verse dripping with wit, questions what we hold dear. The Rape of the Lock
is written as a heroic Romantic poem, dealing in turns with romance and violence.
Canto Three is perhaps Pope s best encapsulation of Romantic passion in the poem.
The card game is told a conflict between semi personified cards and their players,

discussed. The discussion is followed by the problem statement and objectives of the
research, scope of the study, significant of the study, the definition of the term as well
the limitation of the study.
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Backpacking is a form of economical, independent travelling (Hampton, 2013). As
the name implies, the activity usually requires the traveller or the backpacker to
carry back pack, a lighter alternative to the heavier luggage, to carry for long
distances or long period of time. Backpacking trip makes uses of public transport and
inexpensive lodgings such as hostels and boutique hotels. Unlike the common
travelling and vacation activities, backpacking tends to be more adventurous and
educational, where the backpacker often made through research about their
destinations and programs, interacting with the locals, as well as photographing.
Backpacker also has higher socialized environment. Most of the backpackers require
basic needs such as room or bed for the stay. But in the modernized world, their
requirements are changing. Most backpackers will require breakfast meal, internet
access, laundry service, economical transportation ... Show more content on

Among the complaints issued against them is the lack of cleanliness in the hostel
bedrooms. In addition, some of the guests complained about the humid and smelly
toilets, which invites uneasy feelings towards the guest. There are also complaints
about mosquitos and bedbugs. In addition, there some comment toward the noisy
sound especially in the morning time due to the hostel location, which is located at
the busiest road in the Kuala Lumpur. These issues cause different reactions among
their guest. Some guest might consider them as minor issues while others may

Truman Capote s Meaning Of Truman Pary And The
Duality Of...
Although Truman Capote recognizes the duality of Perry, he uses language
complexities to demonize Dick; therefore he argues people with mental health issues
deserve help while those who choose their behaviors deserve harsher punishments.
Amplification embellishes the artwork that Capote illustrates. In the beginning, he
paints the picture of Perry as naive and gentle, which contrasts with Dick who was
heartless and arrogant. Later, a picture of Dick s past as a teenager is elaborated:
An outstanding athlete always on the first team at school. Basketball! Baseball!
Football! Dick was always the star player. A pretty good student, too, with A marks
in several subjects... After he graduated from high school June, 1949 he wanted to go
on to college (Capote 166). The amplification of Dick s high school career was
above average and used to describe his once successful life. This is a crucial
passage to admire because Dick hadn t realized just how fortunate he was as an
adolescent and as he grew older he became dark and closed off as if a switch flipped
inside of him. Creating contrast to his emotions as the murder was leading up. The
behavior switch seemed almost inhuman as a straight A jock turned into a cold
blooded murderer. Dishonorable behaviors can sometimes be the result of a mental
illness, and if society recognized this illness, help could have been provided.
Although, Dick, who decided to follow through with awful intentions without any
remorse, deserves the

Have you ever heard of the witching hour? The period between 3 am and 4 am is

Fungal Meningitis Case Study
In September of 2012, an outbreak of fungal meningitis was detected in Tennessee.
This outbreak was linked to environmental contamination of three lots of
methylprednisolone acetate injections (MPA) from one supplier, the New England
Compounding Center (NECC). Most clinical cases were identified as Exserohilum
rostratum. The index case was infected with Aspergillus fumigatus and twenty two
other fungal species were identified (CDC, 2015). There were 753 total cases and 64
deaths across 20 states. Patients developed meningitis, infection, and stroke.
In 2012, the NECC sold several lots of contaminated medication including the MPA
injections linked to the outbreak of fungal meningitis. In addition to the three MPA
lots, five lots of betamethasone, three lots of triamcinolone, and one lot of
cardioplegia solution were contaminated by a variety of bacteria and fungi including
Aspergillus spp. and Bacillus spp (CDC, 2015). In addition to the MPA lots recalled

rostratum is typically nonpathogenic and is commonly found in the environment.
Under normal conditions, the dematiaceous fungus lives in the soil and only causes
disease in plants. It contains high levels of melanin and is brown or black in
appearance. E. rostratum causes disease in plants, such as leaf spot, blight, and rot
(Gauthier, 2013). This fungus rarely causes disease in humans. The Katragkou
literature review of 2014 used forty eight published cases of Exserohilum infections.
Another literature review found 33 cases between 1950 and 2006 (Adler, 2006). The
majority of infections were in immunocompromised patients of related to trauma

Difficult Conversations Summary
In Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most Stone et al. provide
the reader a three part method to analyze conversations. The method described in the
book involves sorting out three conversations that make up a difficult conversation:
the what happened conversation, the feelings conversation, and the identity
conversation. An analysis of these three conversations provides a powerful and
comprehensive tool for approaching difficult conversations that is, for the verbal part.
Stone and his colleagues fail to elaborate on nonverbal communicationand its
essential role in understanding and gaining the most out of a difficult conversation.
THE WORDLESS CONVERSATION
The importance of body language is often forgotten when engaging in
conversations with other people. As masters of our bodies, we do not need to be
aware of our limbs in order to prevent them from falling on to the floor in a messy
heap. However, this unconscious ability to control our body often leads us to trouble,
as we allow it to interfere with the effectiveness of our communication. By
understanding the origins of our primal language and how the body conveys our
emotions and thoughts, we can begin to appreciate the vital role the wordless
conversation plays in our difficult conversations. ... Show more content on

The spoken language, while endlessly useful, is only a recent invention in
comparison to body language. Dr. Albert Mehrabian s often quoted study found that
7% of a message is conveyed through words, 38% through vocal elements, and 55%
through nonverbal elements. While these statistics and their meanings may not be so
straightforward, the overall take away is clear; nonverbal communication heavily
affects the way we receive and transmit messages.

Why Do Monarch Butterflies Move
Mexico was once the locations where large colonies of monarch butterflies migrated
to. However in the recent years the size of the colonies have began to shrink. The
monarch butterflies tend to hibernate in the winter in reserve forests. It is believed
one reason for the decline of monarch butterflies migrating to the reserve forests in
Mexico is because of the number of insects in these forests had increased along with
the destruction of these forrest. Another reason for monarch butterflies migrating to
these different areas is to follow their food source which is the milkweed. The
milkweed was at one time found in large numbers through out Canda. However due to

Game of Fortune the Role of Virtu Often times we watch many things in our life
without necessarily looking at the context of what we are observing, and taking
note of the politics that take play. Game of Thrones is a series on HBO adapted
from the book by George R. R. Martin that has a number of politically charged
issues. The show takes precedence in a land called The Seven Kingdoms composed
of several territories most notable being Westeros. It takes place during the War of 5
Kings where several opposing factions vie for rule of the Iron Throne (King of the
Seven Kingdoms ) located in Westeros. During this civil war there is a force in the
North beyond the walls that civilized men from The Seven Kingdoms built to hold
an ominous (nightwalkers) force outside their realm. In the show a number of actors
points of view are followed. The viewer watches alliances, trust, deception, fortune,
and skill come into play. This spiral of conflict for possession of the throne started
when King Robert Baratheon became ill and died. However, turmoil for the Iron
Throne is nothing new for the land since it had not long ago been ruled by the Mad
King Targaryen whose lineage had ruled the throne for long reign. Conflicts arise
among many of the parties that had invested interest in the throne. Scandals and
accusations put many in the realm at junctions where they must form alliances. As

Price Makers and Price Takers
Market Structure o Perfect (pure) competition
Price taking firms each with no influence over the ruling market price (see diagram

Each supplier produces homogeneous products each a perfect substitute hence the
perfectly elastic demand curve for the individual supplier
Key factor interdependent nature of pricing decisions between rival firms
Each firm must consider strategic behaviour of other players in the market

When demand is strong and rising (e.g. during the upturn phase of the economic
cycle), a business will have more pricing power than when demand is much weaker
and falling (e.g. during a recession).
Often a market may be affected by a demand side shock which takes away the
pricing power of suppliers. The airline industry in the wake of the terrorist attacks in
2001 could be considered as an example of this.
Summary of the main factors affecting a firm s pricing power

Influence on Pricing Policy
In order to make a profit, a business should ensure that its products are priced above
their average cost. In the short term, it may be acceptable to price below AC if this
price exceeds marginal cost so that the sale still produces a positive contribution to
fixed costs.
If the business is a monopolist, then it has price setting power. At the other extreme,
if a firm operates under conditions of perfect competition, it has no choice and must
accept the market price. The reality is usually somewhere in between. In such cases
the chosen price needs to be considered relative to those of close competitors and
with one eye to the likely reaction of rival firms when a business changes its pricing
strategy.

the concept class in sociology has come under attack , which having many
definitions. And as the tile shows, there are even disagreements over its very
existence. Before we get into the details, at least, let us look at one definition. Social
class is a set of concepts in the social sciences and political theory centered on
models of social stratification in which people are grouped into a set of hierarchical
social categories(Grant, J. Andrew (2001). Encyclopedia of International Political

Marx thinks that the limited power of the worker is the base of the exploitation
and the reason for the conflict. He also believe that both of the class has their own
wariness of the situation and unequal states, they know their social position and
why it is the way it is. But appearance of calm is the result of the education of the
capitalists . The workers are told they world works this way and it is unchangeable,
the both parties are compatible with each other. And he suggests that workers need to
be reeducated to gain control of the mind. Then there will be confrontation and
gaining of leverage in asking for better treatment or even revolution to put an end to
the very existence of class . The radical solution comes from careful philosophical
thinking.
Weber s analysis of class likes Marx s. The difference is he sees the social classes
as more complex classes, and he argues about social stratification in social class with
wider meaning. Weber argues, Marx s famous dictum that Class . . . is ultimately

the result that class analysis reduces to a weak rump of residual questions about

Theme Of Blackberry Picking By Seamus Heaney
Seamus Heaney s Blackberry Picking, recounts a journey that starts with the
luscious taste of a blackberry, sparking a lust (Line 7) in the speaker to go pick
more. Nevertheless, such a journey is ended with the cache (Line 19) of
blackberries rotting, yet he still continuously picks more every year with the same
outcome, giving a false sense of hope to the speaker. Heaney can convey a strong
image of what it s like to pick blackberries, and he can also portray the personal
feelings of the entire experience through his use of sensory language and strong
imagery. The language Heaney uses, in Blackberry Picking , expresses the intimacy
the speaker has with the taste of the blackberries, producing a visual bond with the
characteristics of the berry. Heaney uses seductive language, such as describing the
taste as thickened wine (Line 6) enough to give a sensation of lust (Line 7) for
wanting to pick more. The blackberries are innate with summer s blood (Line 6)

Why Are Great Italian Renaissance Architects More

Why are great Italian Renaissance architects more famous than their great Gothic
predecessors? Discuss how and why the role and image of the architect changed
during the Italian Renaissance.
The Renaissance is studded by the names of the artists and architects, with their
creations recorded as great historical events. Arthur Erickson
The end of the 14th century was the birth of Renaissance, which meant that Gothic
architecture began to wear off. The Renaissance period spread out across Europe.
Along with the changes in politics, beliefs, and ways of life, architecture and
architects were also changing. A group of Italian academics, some of whom were
amateur architects, influenced the birth of Renaissance architecture. Many
renaissance buildings have murals and statues because artists and architects started

The architects of this period solved the problems of heavy roof with few brilliant
innovations such as the flying buttress (a semi arch), piers, etc. The result was
amazing: cathedrals could be higher, thinner, and could have more windows, which
led to brighter interiors. In my opinion, this was a good base to start producing
something more magnificent, more interesting, and other types of architecture,
besides just cathedrals.
Architects of the Renaissance period designed a large spectrum of civil structures
like palaces, libraries, villas, fountains, hospitals, bridges, etc. They built urban
spaces which looked magnificent and also a little frightening. The facade gives us a
hint of what is happening inside: an enormous central door indicates power,
stonework shows strength, marble shows wealth, and so on. One of the most
recognizable features of Renaissance buildings is elegant interior courtyards
surrounded by two tiers of rounded arcades. One such example of a Renaissance
building is the Florence cathedral, designed by Filippo
News From Nowhere By William Morris Essay
William Morris novel News from Nowhere is portrayed as a utopic vision of a
world that not only abolishes the class system, but is created through the transition
from working in order to survive to working for the pleasure of it. Consequently,
his novel may seem only as a vision due to its idealistic reasoning as to how his
portrayed world dependant on nature and people s nature could possibly exist and
support itself. Even though this is merely theory on his part, his essay Useful Work
versus Useless Toil supports a better understanding of Morris conceptualization of
enjoyable labour within his ideal future society in his novel News from Nowhere
because it suggests how finding pleasure in doing work leads to a better and
enlightened society.
Morris clearly separates labour between pre and post revolution by highlighting and
redefining the terms civilization and society in which a true society is only possible
once the class system is destroyed and people are treated as equals. In the novel, the
narrator William Guest asks Hammond how his 19th century world shifted to the
elder s, and the answer is the revolution leading to the abolishment of social class.
According to Hammond, he defines civilization as organized misery in which he
criticizes the class system for denigrating the lower classes into subservient people
unknowingly supporting and enriching the middle and upper classes while scrapping
by with little reward to their own lifestyle (Morris 125).

For e.g. , when demand is perfectly elastic, by definition consumers have an infinite
ability to switch to alternatives if the price increases, so they would stop buying the

opposite case, when demand is perfectly inelastic, by definition consumers have no
alternative to purchasing the good or service if the price increases, so the quantity

In reality, demand is expected to be relatively elastic or relatively inelastic, that is,

Similarities Between Love Songs And Poems
Even though everyone has a different way to articulate love, expressions have been
developed that are now very commonly used in love songs and poems.
The two very contrasting sides of love are often compared directly. As a result this
comparison shows that the good cannot exist without the bad side, making love
highly equivocal. Although anyone would want to avoid feeling grief the feeling
accompanying it being joy overshadows the hurt one has to endure. Undoubtedly
this may lead to confusion as to whether or not love is beneficial or harmful in the
long run. This emotional disorientation will force people to confront the fact that it

love does can be healed by the bliss it simultaneously creates.

Common illnesses that can occur are salmonella and trichinosis poisoning resulting
from improper handling of chicken, eggs or pork (Jardin, 2009, para.2). Diseases
such as: campylobacteriosis, cholera, and listeriosis also make the list of illnesses
(Jardin, 2009, para.1). These diseases are the versions of food poisoning, which can
be life threatening. According to the World of Health article published in 2007,
In the United States of America, for example, around 76 million cases of food borne

might involve blind taste testing, and then asking test subjects to evaluate the food s

it might involve culturing and counting the number of microorganisms present in a

The Romantic Hero in Pechorin, Onegin, and the Demon
Through examining the works of Lermontov, A Hero of Our Time, and The Demon,
as well as Pushkin s Eugene Onegin, we can see the similarities between Pechorin, the
Demon, and Onegin and how each character embodies the qualities of the romantic
hero. A romantic hero is a very contradicting character. For example, in the History of
Russian Literature by Charles A. Moser, he describes the romantic hero as having the
anguish of emptiness; the trembling anxieties of a shallow self love as well as
genuine power and courage; noble aspirations along with ignorance and poor
upbringing (137). All of the traits stated above are very conflicting. Pechorin, Onegin

Pechorin, being the tactless character he is, treats women as an incentive for
endless conquests and does not consider them worthy of any particular respect. He
considers women, such as Princess Mary, to be little more than a romantic game
and they have no meaning to him. This is shown in his comment on Princess
Mary: I often wonder why I m trying so hard to win the love of a girl I have no desire
to seduce and whom I d never marry (Lermontov, 126). This quote is a perfect
example of how Pechorin can be extremely self serving and disregard the feelings of
others. It also exemplifies his inability to return to the strong feelings of love.
Toward the end of the novel we explore Pechorin s final adventures that lead to his
downfall and isolation from society, resulting in his death. It is in his final
adventures that we see Pechorin take a turn for the worse as he says, And perhaps
tomorrow I ll die...so why bother to live (Lermontov 157). In this passage it
becomes clear as day that Pechorin has fallen into a deep depression. The constant
change in personality and character is the exact reason that explains how Pechorin is
a perfect example of the literary romantic hero.
Pechorin describes his own personality as self destructive, and he came to the
realization that he doesn t understand his purpose as he constantly questions why he
is involved in many situations throughout the novel. His boredom with life, and
feeling of emptiness, gives him

Shakespeare s Comedy of Errors and Plautus Menaechmi and Amphitruo
One of Shakespeare s earliest plays (its first recorded performance in December
1594), The Comedy of Errors has frequently been dismissed as pure farce,
unrepresentative of the playwright s later efforts. While Errors may very well
contain farcical elements, it is a complex, layered work that draws upon and
reinterprets Plautine comedy. Shakespeare combines aspects of these Latin plays
with biblical source material, chiefly the Acts of the Apostlesand the Pauline Epistle
to the Ephesians. While Menaechmi is the most frequently cited classical source for
Errors, Plautus Amphitruo is just as relevant an influence; Shakespeare s treatment of

Egeon s woeful tale provides the audience with the appropriate background to the
play, which begins in medias res, thus satisfying the requirements of narratio which
constitute the first element of Evanthian and Donatian comic structure. That said,
Shakespeare s prologue differs remarkably from its Plautine counterparts В much
more integrated with the play as a whole, it is framed by the revelation of Egeon s
imprisonment in Ephesus, and the Duke s decree that:
...if any Syracusian born
Come to the bay of Ephesus, he dies,
His goods confiscate to the Duke s dispose,
Unless a thousand marks be leviГЁd
To quit the penalty and to ransom him.
The gravity of Egeon s predicament, and the play s potential for tragedy, is rendered
even more poignant by the senex s constant grief. In direct contrast, the prologue of
Menaechmi is witty, urbane, and very informal. Not only does the speaker slyly
mock the audience ( Please listen with your whole attention span; / I ll tell it in the
very fewest words I can ), he delivers a rather sharp jab to other Roman comic
playwrights, who proudly boast of their authenticity and their fidelity to the Greek
models, a practice which evidently had some snob appeal. Ironically, this jab seves as
a basis for the playwright to assert his own authenticity and dramatic authority:

virus could have shaped the outcome of this crisis very differently, luckily there was
a high level of service provision and resources available which included training,
staffing numbers. Having the essential resources enabled close monitoring of
reported cases of the measles virus could be carried out by all staff in the health
protection team, central health protection division and the communicable disease
surveillance centre. Monitoring also included a wider surveillance of both notified
and confirmed cases, situation updates were distributed to members of the measles
Senior Response Team and headline figures were also provided to the welsh
government.
Figures were issued to the public via a press release twice weekly to ensure the
public were aware of the severity of the outbreak and to show a pro active approach.
Released information of confirmed cases was broken down by age group and area
this was to coincide with the press release each week, and to provide accurate

Revolutions In The Cuban Revolution
Why do revolutions occur? What actors are usually involved? This are the two central
questions that both Charles Tilley and Samuel Huntington attempt to answer by
examining the reoccurring patterns of armed resistance and collective violence.
Huntington and Chase both claim that revolutions are rare events which occur
because of modernization. However, Chase and Huntington both have very different
definitions of modernization, along with different models of revolutions. Chase
points to gender ideas as central to various opposition movements within the Cuban
Revolution, and she highlights the road to a revolutionary moment in which women
were pivotal (Stevens 9/18/17). Huntington s model of revolution involves a sudden
explosion of political participation due to modernization, and revolution occurs when
the established order is unable to keep up with the demands of the newly integrated
groups. I feel that Tilley provides the best model of revolutions because he does not
simply attribute armed revolutions to the undefined term of modernization, but
instead focuses on the roles of omnipresent actors involved in these revolutions (these
actors being; the government, the various contenders of power, and the polity). I
would argue that his argument is more logically sound because he points to a
tangible sources of power, such as a government s coercive apparatuses, as a
revolutionary barrier which must be overcome with armed resistance and a strong
support base in order for
Insecurity Narrative
When it comes to the idea of family we think of unity and happiness not division and
agony. The average family we think of today is a mirage of stable households
collectively happy. The father is the head of the house, the foundation, the mother is
the body, the frame and walls that binds it all together and the children are the doors
and windows that shine light into the house. my house was not that mirage. Although
being raised in a single parenthousehold made me feel incomplete and growing up as
a teenager made me insecure, as a young adult I realized it was a stepping stone
across those hardships of the past to persevere through those obstacles in the future.
Insecurity, Having the feeling of insecurity at a young age follows us through
Disadvantages Of Plyometric Training
Plyometric training is a modality which requires highly coordinated and skillful
movements such as bounding, jumping, hopping and skipping. The stretch
shortening cycle is an essential for plyometric training and can be described as
muscle undergoing eccentric contraction; then transitioning into concentric
contraction. Fast and slow plyometric movements are two categories plyometricscan
be separated into depending upon the duration of ground contact time. The training
volume for this type of exercisecan be measured easily but measuring intensity is
more complex due to individual variability. Athletes who compete in sports such as
football, basketball, soccer, and track and field can benefit from plyometric training
in several ways. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mode of plyometric training is determined by the region of the body the individual
is performing the exercise. The intensity is the amount of stress placed on muscles,
connective tissues, and joints in a drill. The intensity of plyometric training can
vary depending on the athlete and precise consideration should be given when
choosing proper drills during a specific cycle. Plyometric frequency can vary
depending on the demand of the sport. According to Essential of Strength Training
and Conditioning, researchers suggest forty eight to seventy two hours between
plyometric training sessions is a typical recovery time guideline for prescribing
plyometrics. (Haff, 2016) Plyometric training drills involve maximal effort from
the athlete to improve anaerobic power, and adequate recovery. For example,
recovery for depth jumps may consist of 5 10 seconds of rest between repetitions
and 2 3 minutes between sets. (Haff, 2016) Plyometric volume is the number of
repetitions and sets performed during a training session. Recommended lower body
plyometric volumes is given as number of foot contacts and can vary at different
levels of experience for athletes. The upper body volume is the number of throws or
catches per session. The plyometric training program should progress from, low to
moderate volumes of
Good vs Evil in the Epic of Beowulf Essay examples
In the epic poem Beowulf, there is an obvious distinction between good and evil.
The hero and his foes play roles that are commonly associated with Anglo Saxon
literature. The lines are clearly drawn and expressed in the poem. As the story
moves, the reader cannot mistake the roles being played, based on the
characterizations in the epic, one recognizes each character for their purpose and
place. The epic is named after the hero, Beowulf, who is a man with gleaming armor.
(line 130) Because Beowulf is the strongest of the Geats greater than anyone in the
world he was called upon by his uncle Higlac, the king of the Geats, to save Herot
from the wrath of Grendel, a terrible monster. (lines 110 111) With him he carries...

Eventually, at a ripe old age, Beowulf finally suffers the wrath of the dragon. He
epitomizes the values of a warrior society which include bravery, loyalty, and
prowess in battle. As a bloodthirsty fiend, Grendel was the first of the foes Beowulf
battles. (line 407) He is a powerful monster, who was spawned in... slime. (lines 1,
19) He is a descendant of Cain, and chose to sacrifice the Danes to no one but
himself. Grendel is set on murder. (49 50) Nothing can quench his thirst for evil.
(lines 52 53) Grendel stalked Herot and set his wrath loose on all who came to the
hall. His mother, the she wolf lived in an underwater cavern. (line 572) She is the
water witch, one that no one s sword could slice her evil skin. (lines 493, 496 497)
Both characters are demons living only to hate, and cause terror in the hearts of
those who know of them. The third villain comes much later than the first two. The
dragon is Beowulf s last enemy, and last battle. The beast poured out fire and
smoke, and was one who coiled and uncoiled at the sight of a human. (line 673)
The dragon menaces Beowulf s kingdom and as an old man he is forced to fight
the beast. The antagonists are evil and uncaring of human life, each choosing to end
it when they please. They are bad and it shows. One night as Grendel decides to pay
a visit to Herot
Francisco Piria Research Paper
Uruguayan Alchemy Uruguay is a secular nation, with a distinct separation
between church and state. As such, touring churches and cathedrals is not an
integral part of Uruguayan tourism. Those with an interest in mysticism, however,
will not be disappointed. Introducing Francisco Piria Francisco Piria was born in
1847 in Montevideo. During his childhood, his family sent him to Genoa, Italy to
study with his uncle, a Jesuit monk. It was in Italy that Piria developed an interest
in the mystical arts of alchemy and Kabbalah. After completing his studies, Piria
returned to Montevideo and established himself as a real estate auctioneer. Piria s
Vision While living in Europe, Piria s visits to the French Riviera created an image
of the city he wished to create. His dream city was 62 miles east of Montevideo.
When he looked at the small mountains cascading down toward the sea, he
purchased the 2700 parcels of untouched land, and went to work on his new utopia.

The Importance Of Leadership And Objectives Of
Leadership...
To make the most of leadership development, you need to plan for it carefully. As
mentioned in the earlier section, you can minimise the risk of failure with a
leadership program if you take the appropriate steps beforehand. In the final section,
we ll provide you the five essential steps you need to take to guarantee your leadership
development is effective in achieving the benefits.
Step 1: Define your businesses understanding of leadership
Before you Google leadership development programs and pick one for you or your
organisation, you need to consider what leadership means. It is essential to outline
the importance of leadership, the meaning of leadership and the objectives of
leadership development before signing up with a specific course. While leadership
development is about enhancing your understanding of leadership and the skills
required to lead, you need to have an organisation wide understanding of it before you
can start with improving your knowledge on the topic.
Defining your business understand of leadership is best achieved by answering the
following questions:
What does the business value the most? Outline the key values that define your
organisation and the work that you do.

Tsar Nicolas II And The Causes Of The Russian Revolution
The Russian Revolution of 1917 was the outcome of discontent amongst the peasants
for over centuries under the Tsarist autocracy. However, the desperate need to
dismantle and revolt against the regime sparked within them during the reign of Tsar
Nicolas II, who proved to be an incompetent autocrat. The Tsar s reliance on his weak
and indecisive character throughout handling the matters of his empire expanded
upon numerous long term causes of the Russian Revolution. Economic causes
included the industrialization of Russia, which resulted in proletariats protesting for
better working conditions and wages. As for social causes, they included the
sufferings of poverty stricken peasants due to prevalent classism, as well as the Tsar s

The population of Russia was 128 million in the 1900 s, and it included 200 different
national minorities who spoke different languages and practiced different religions.
Although any leader would find ruling a country with such a huge and diverse
population a difficult task, it was Tsar Nicolas the II s inadequate attempt to unify his
country that caused these national minorities to oppose him as a ruler. He continued
with and expanded upon Tsar Alexander III s policy of Russification , which forced
non Russians to adopt the Russian language, as well as Russian clothes and customs,
whilst abandoning their own. This form of cultural assimilation and erasure angered
the many national minorities. They were unhappy with the Tsar s unfair treatment
when it came to social, economic and political issues. Consequently, many subversive
groups were formed with the aim of spreading anti Russian propaganda. Some non
Russians joined the Social Democratic and the Social Revolutionary Parties.
Therefore, it was evident that the Tsar s failed attempt to unify his country caused
non Russians to be dissatisfied by him, hence why they supported the

The concept of human nature focuses on the distinctive natural characteristics of
humans, namely the ways we feel, think and act, regardless of external forces as well
as influences. Within the study and discipline of Philosophy, this fundamental nature
of humans and our existence is scrutinized. Philosophy involves a continuous search
and lookout for an accurate understanding of the underlying traits of humankind that
are deemed to be common among all humans. Starting with the ancient philosophers
and ending with the contemporary thinkers, a bridge of suppositions that seemingly
define human nature has been established, despite the fact that there are vital
differences. Numerous conjectures and theories have been put forward by... Show

Their disagreement revolves around the extent of the senses contribution to
knowledge, which leads to an epistemological debate. Rationalists distrust the senses,
however, in reality the senses are all we have and this is what Kant asserts. Kant
makes it clear that both rationalists and empiricists disregard or rather miss the fact
that the human mind is restricted and these limitations can be described as synthetic
and a priori. According to Kant, every possible experience of ours is constrained and
structured by synthetic a priori restrictions, specifically space, time and causality and
since these limitations are present, we have to take it upon ourselves to differentiate
between the phenomenal and noumenal the apparent and the real world. Kant
asserted that the human mind is an active organ and knowledge begins with
experience, but as opposed to the belief of the empiricists, we do not merely
experience the world, we understand experiences through processes of the mind and
acquire knowledge from these processed experiences. Prior to Kant, the common
belief was that knowledge must conform and be consistent with objects, however,
Kant contended that objects must conform to knowledge, which is once again
structured by synthetic a priori limitations of space, time and causality. The human
mind is restricted to knowing only of appearances and never the real
Analysis Of Nicolas Belmont s The Prince
Nicolas Belmont Those two words mean a lot in this school. Why? Because
Nicolas Belmont is Prince Charming, with good looks, intelligence and charm.

Review Of Ayn Rand s Book Virtue Of Selfishness
The title of Ayn Rand s book is the virtue of selfishness. According to the Webster
Dictionary, virtue is a particular moral excellence. To have virtue is to follow a
specific area of moral excellence or standard; based on this definition, throughout
the introduction of her book, Rand discusses the moral excellent aspects of
selfishness, and works to dispel the negative connotations associated with the word
selfishness. Rand begins by discussing the popular usage of the word selfish and
then she compares it to the dictionary definition of selfishness, which states that
selfishness is to be concerned with one s own interest . This definition does not have
any moral standard for one s interest and whether they are good or bad nor does it

Altruism is an impossible and irrational moral standard to live by because it
concentrates on the beneficiary of the moral values, not on the values themselves.
Rand states that we are not altruistic because of our desire to live. Rand states that
altruism would find the desire to live evil because living or surviving requires one to
concern themselves with their own interests. Altruism denies an individual the right
of self care. Altruism permits no concept of a self respecting, self supporting man a
man who supports his life by his own effort and neither sacrifices himself nor others
(Rand 7). Altruism teaches those under its ruling, that morality is their enemy. They
can only lose, since the benefactor cannot benefit from their own actions, all their
losses are self inflicted. Rand draws a comparison to a scenario where an
individual is a part of a Christmas exchange and they receive gifts they did not want
or did not choose, but they are also not permitted to buy themselves the gifts they
desire. Rand states that based on this scenario and these standard, an individual does
not truly become aware of morality nor do they have the desire to make use of
morality as a guide for the course and fulfillment of their

The Role of Firearms Throughout History Essay
Have you ever wondered how guns came to be? Most people have little or no idea.
The history is more complex than people assume it to be; there is no one person
credited with inventing the firearm. One nation in particular has played a major role
in the incredible discovery that would change the way people hunt, protect
themselves, and engage in warfare. This nation is China, and the history of the firearm
can be traced to the second century. But before we dive into the history of firearm,
one must understand what a firearm is. According to Merriam Webster, a firearm is a
weapon from which a shot is discharged by gunpowder usually used of small arms.

A fire lance was a combination of a spear and tube capable of firing projectiles at a
maximum distance of a few feet. Because hand to hand combat was the most
popular means of combat at the time, this gave wielders a significant advantage to
enemies just holding swords or knives. Designed only as a weapon, the fire lance
would be loaded with poison tipped projectiles and after fired could be used as a
spear.
But as with any notable invention, its creators worried that others may discover how
it was produced and begin making their own version of the identical device. In the
eleventh century the ruling Dynasty of China, Song, were concerned about enemies
learning the secrets behind gunpowder technology. In 1247 the Chinese used
gunpowder for the first time in combat, most likely a cannon like weapon in the Siege
of Seville to overcome their Muslim foes (http://www.themcs.org/weaponry/cannon

cannons, in 1346(http://books.google.com/books?id=ANTSvKj1AZEC pg=PA541

dynamic characters affect the consequence of choice. Ultimately tone affects the

  • 2. Punchbowl Falls Growing up in the Pacific Northwest of the United States has ignited my passion for hiking and being in nature. For a greater portion of my life, I have lived next to Multnomah Falls and all the beautiful hikes that surround it. My absolute favorite hike in the Columbia River Gorge area is Punchbowl Falls. It is 5 miles and leads to a beautiful waterfall that people can swim in. Conquering this hike takes almost a full day as it is mostly uphill and once people finally find the waterfall, they do not ever wish to leave. Most of it is on a cliff s edge, which can be intimidating, but as people hike higher, they are able to see incredible views of thousands of trees that never end. If that isn t beautiful enough, the site of the waterfall is breathtaking. My first time going on this hike, I could hear the water of the waterfall roaring, much like my excitement to capture in its beauty. When I witnessed the waterfall, I noticed it runs off about a fifty foot cliff and I saw others jumping off it. After many minutes of standing on the cliff s edge, I finally gained enough courage to jump. Jumping into freezing cold water is extremely exhilarating, and I fell in love with Punchbowl based off this experience.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Witnessing nature is captivating as I am able to examine beauty everywhere I look. Breathing in the fresh air surrounding me makes me feel as if I am breathing out all my troubles. Jumping into a waterfall of freezing cold water makes me feel as though I am truly alive and not just existing. Nature is an escape from the real world and it is where I turn when I need to distract myself from reality. Being able to witness Heavenly Father s creations is a blessing and I am grateful I could grow up in a place where a plethora of magnificent hikes is only a 20 minute drive
  • 3. Zoos, Aquariums And Museum Nowadays, it is hard to find a person who has never been in a zoo, aquarium or museum. Since childhood we find it fancy to observe animals and exhibits, but sometimes even adults do not understand what the real value of zoos, aquariums and museums is. First, it is necessary to explain the main goals of these institutions which are to increase knowledge about the surrounding, to learn about conservation related behavior and to build conservation principles. In order to fulfill these goals, modern zoos, aquariums and museums provide a huge range of possibilities such as arranging specific exhibitions ensuring visual experiences, presenting new information and joining the conservation organization (Yalowitz). In addition, the information given in an exhibition is not as memorable as it seems at first. After a week or more people are tend to forget the main message of the presentation. Thus, it means that zoos, aquariums and museums have to find a way how to increase an impact during people s visits. This is further shown by the fact that the follow up visitors gain more knowledge than the first time ones. In other words, the follow up visitors are more likely to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of them want to observe exhibits to bate his or her curiosity, others have hobby passions on the shown topic and would like to gain a new experience. What is also worth mentioning is that information presented in an exposure has to comprise needs of every visitor, and zoos, aquariums and museums have to make it easy for everyone to understand and comprehend all that was shown and said. Other aspects such as age, gender, social group, ethnicity and basic level of knowledge should also be taken into consideration. Besides, another argument is that institutions should also provide programs for distinguishing motivations in order to fulfill one s expectations and to increase long term knowledge (why zoos

  • 5. Swot Analysis Of Ford 4. Threats Economic Instability Because of the label of a luxury good the stability of the economy is detrimental to the increase of sales. Economic instability is sometimes linked to political instability and in the international market both are highly volatile. Large Number of Competitors There are many competitors in the automotive industry and many of them are ranked higher than Ford, in recent polls, due to the growing global reach and recognition by consumers. Political instability With Ford s dependencies on foreign markets due to expansion beyond the capacity of the U.S. market, political stability in markets outside the U.S. could pose a risk for Ford. Recently relationships between the U.S. and Mexico has weakened and according to Ford s annual report employee voluntary resignation is among the highest in Mexico and China. Highly Competitive Market As stated earlier, the market that Ford operates in is highly competitive and Ford must maintain its ability to analyze what competitors are doing so it can stay competitive and gain more market share. Growth of Competitors With growing competition in the market, Ford must find a way to regain its market share and rebound from the recent decline from the top 3 in the industry. Toyota is leading the way as is Renault Nissan per recent polls, Ford has dropped to fifth in World automobile production. Growth in alternative mobility platforms has also allowed for new competitors to enter the market such as Tesla. As
  • 6. Catch 22 Character Analysis John Yossarian, the protagonist of Catch 22, is an important character since helps the reader makes sense of the ludricious bureaucracy in power. More times than not, Yossarian serves as the voice of reason, attempting to correct his fellow soldiers irrational ideas. In addition, he is non complacent, often questioning his officers and poking holes in their logic. Heller uses Yossarianfor this role to highlight the flaws of the military, such as their shoddy reasoning and lack of empathy for their soldiers. Despite being one of the more sane soldiers, Yossarian wishes to leave the military more than anything else. He finds the war dangerous and a risk for his own sake. Moreover, this stresses another theme in the novel, survival instincts are first and foremost drives of humans. At the end of the day, no matter how kind and thoughtful one, they will always look at out for their best interest first. However, near the end of the novel, Yossarian breaks his mold when he stays loyal to his squadron. When offered the choice to leave the military in turn for abandoning the men in his squadron, he vehemently refuses. This shows while humans may be capable of great lengths of selfishness, they are also capable of good Doc Daneeka, partially like Yossarian, represents the selfishness of humanity. Despite being a doctor, Daneeka only ever worries about his own health, ignoring his own patients. He even neglects his duty as flight surgeon and only pretends to be logged on the plane
  • 7. U.s. Foreign Policy Decisions everyone, not only because of threats of terrorist attacks or the danger of war, but for far more mundane reasons. (Kaufman pg. 3). Here Kaufman begins to unravel the differences between these two types of foreign policy. The extraordinary are the issues surrounding war, terrorist attacks, cyber warfare. The mundane, is as simple as the labels on your clothing, but as complex as who is allowed entry into the U.S.. These topics do not elicit as much of a reaction, because as Kaufman argues the foreign policydecisions that most people know about and follow closely are those that are extraordinary because the stakes appear to be so high. (Kaufman pg. 3). Although there appears to be strong evidence suggesting the importance of foreign policy, that is not reflected in American culture. As noted above, this is strongly related to the perceived value of the issues. In today s world we have more access to information than we have ever had in the history of the world. One would think this would lead to a more informed and educated public. While this could be the case in some areas of study, it is not the case in foreign policy. Mead addresses some of Americans views and the role they play throughout history. He makes several strong and persuasive declarations about American foreign policy stating one of the most remarkable features of contemporary U.S. foreign policy is the ignorance of and contempt for the country s own foreign policy he goes on to add lack of interest is
  • 8. Narrative Essay On Lif Life ...do you think we would be able to just borrow a little something..just until I get paid. I ll give it right back. I hear my mother in the restroom of our one bed motel room, faintly making phone call after phone call to every relative or family friend that she could flip to in her black book, pleading for just enough money to pay for our stay in the motel for another week. She made this phone call every week that her paycheck went to buying clothes for me for school, buying an excess of groceries because we had gone so long without food, bus fare for when our tried and true car went in for maintenance or other out of the budget expenses. We didn t have much and being just the two of us, we struggled severely. I look outside the motel window, at the seedy parking lot littered with trash, at the uninviting people loitering, at the dimly lit motel sign with certain letters just barely illuminating and I hopelessly and silently cried, wondering just how long our circumstances would persist. Kira was our leader and illustrator; Isaiah was our researcher; Rainena was our reader; Hollis was our person who helped those who needed help. The stories had a similar theme, love, and how it affects those who have experienced love at its greatest measure. The Broken Heart was a short storyrevolving around the plot of disappointed love. It was a comparison between the love of men and women. Men s love is based on their interest and ambition, seeking fame or fortune or dominion. As a result, they are not as attached as women. Unlike men, women are more in touch with their feelings. They are secluded and fixed on one person. He said that it is important to have an interest in some activities because being disengaged can have an effect on an individual and lead them to isolation and depression. Even if it does not have a direct effect on us, we are still able to watch how it shapes the people around us and our society as a whole. Between men and women there are obvious differences including their roles in society, and their behavior, however, there have been significant changes in gender roles over the years, which has made a positive impact on the nation. But where did it all start? Let s go back one hundred and forty years; back to 1875. By this time, Elizabeth Stanton and Susan B. Anthony had established the National Woman Suffrage Organization to achieve women s rights to vote by means of a new amendment. About six years down the road, another feministic issue arose. Feminists began to debate over how to achieve liberty for married women. In an essay written by Stanton, she demands that equality should be extended into the private life. True independence for married women forced them to deal with an immense number of divorce laws. In order for a woman to cease a marriage, she would be required to provide proof of adultery, desertion, or extreme abuse. Of course this brought in quite a bit of female supporters who agreed that women should be free to choose whether they stay or leave. Surprisingly, only a small number of men sympathized with the female perspective of feeling trapped in their own marriage (Primary Sources p.14). According to Stanton, the reason for the lack of
  • 13. Romantic Emotionism In Alexander Pope s The Rape Of The Lock Most of life s moments have little import. Each day often screams no more of significance than the day preceding. There are a few moments throughout life that manage to contain, within themselves, the power to change the course of one s life, but more often than not, the moments we give importance to are fairly trivial events, changing or altering nothing more than any other day. We find that those more common moments are created by culture, cultivated in a society that believes that something about a day or a time though nothing significant changes, like birthdays demarking a specific time on a continuum makes it special. This same brand of cultural elevation affects physical features and infrequent, though insignificant still, actions. Alexander Popes The Rape of the Lockcharts that influence in society and, with verse dripping with wit, questions what we hold dear. The Rape of the Lock is written as a heroic Romantic poem, dealing in turns with romance and violence. Canto Three is perhaps Pope s best encapsulation of Romantic passion in the poem. When demand is strong and rising (e.g. during the upturn phase of the economic cycle), a business will have more pricing power than when demand is much weaker and falling (e.g. during a recession). Often a market may be affected by a demand side shock which takes away the pricing power of suppliers. The airline industry in the wake of the terrorist attacks in 2001 could be considered as an example of this. Summary of the main factors affecting a firm s pricing power Category Costs Competitors Influence on Pricing Policy In order to make a profit, a business should ensure that its products are priced above their average cost. In the short term, it may be acceptable to price below AC if this price exceeds marginal cost so that the sale still produces a positive contribution to fixed costs. If the business is a monopolist, then it has price setting power. At the other extreme, if a firm operates under conditions of perfect competition, it has no choice and must accept the market price. The reality is usually somewhere in between. In such cases the chosen price needs to be considered relative to those of close competitors and with one eye to the likely reaction of rival firms when a business changes its pricing strategy.

News From Nowhere By William Morris Essay William Morris novel News from Nowhere is portrayed as a utopic vision of a world that not only abolishes the class system, but is created through the transition from working in order to survive to working for the pleasure of it. Consequently, his novel may seem only as a vision due to its idealistic reasoning as to how his portrayed world dependant on nature and people s nature could possibly exist and support itself. Even though this is merely theory on his part, his essay Useful Work versus Useless Toil supports a better understanding of Morris conceptualization of enjoyable labour within his ideal future society in his novel News from Nowhere because it suggests how finding pleasure in doing work leads to a better and enlightened society. Morris clearly separates labour between pre and post revolution by highlighting and redefining the terms civilization and society in which a true society is only possible once the class system is destroyed and people are treated as equals. In the novel, the narrator William Guest asks Hammond how his 19th century world shifted to the elder s, and the answer is the revolution leading to the abolishment of social class. According to Hammond, he defines civilization as organized misery in which he criticizes the class system for denigrating the lower classes into subservient people unknowingly supporting and enriching the middle and upper classes while scrapping by with little reward to their own lifestyle (Morris 125).

A romantic hero is a very contradicting character. For example, in the History of Russian Literature by Charles A. Pechorin, being the tactless character he is, treats women as an incentive for endless conquests and does not consider them worthy of any particular respect. He considers women, such as Princess Mary, to be little more than a romantic game and they have no meaning to him. This is shown in his comment on Princess Mary: I often wonder why I m trying so hard to win the love of a girl I have no desire to seduce and whom I d never marry (Lermontov, 126). This quote is a perfect example of how Pechorin can be extremely self serving and disregard the feelings of others. It also exemplifies his inability to return to the strong feelings of love. Toward the end of the novel we explore Pechorin s final adventures that lead to his downfall and isolation from society, resulting in his death. It is in his final adventures that we see Pechorin take a turn for the worse as he says, And perhaps tomorrow I ll die...so why bother to live (Lermontov 157). In this passage it becomes clear as day that Pechorin has fallen into a deep depression. The constant change in personality and character is the exact reason that explains how Pechorin is a perfect example of the literary romantic hero. Pechorin describes his own personality as self destructive, and he came to the realization that he doesn t understand his purpose as he constantly questions why he is involved in many situations throughout the novel. This are the two central questions that both Charles Tilley and Samuel Huntington attempt to answer by examining the reoccurring patterns of armed resistance and collective violence. Huntington and Chase both claim that revolutions are rare events which occur because of modernization. However, Chase and Huntington both have very different definitions of modernization, along with different models of revolutions. Chase points to gender ideas as central to various opposition movements within the Cuban Revolution, and she highlights the road to a revolutionary moment in which women were pivotal (Stevens 9/18/17). Huntington s model of revolution involves a sudden explosion of political participation due to modernization, and revolution occurs when the established order is unable to keep up with the demands of the newly integrated groups. I feel that Tilley provides the best model of revolutions because he does not simply attribute armed revolutions to the undefined term of modernization, but instead focuses on the roles of omnipresent actors involved in these revolutions (these actors being; the government, the various contenders of power, and the polity). I would argue that his argument is more logically sound because he points to a tangible sources of power, such as a government s coercive apparatuses, as a revolutionary barrier which must be overcome with armed resistance and a strong support base in order for

To have virtue is to follow a specific area of moral excellence or standard; based on this definition, throughout the introduction of her book, Rand discusses the moral excellent aspects of selfishness, and works to dispel the negative connotations associated with the word selfishness. Rand begins by discussing the popular usage of the word selfish and then she compares it to the dictionary definition of selfishness, which states that selfishness is to be concerned with one s own interest . This definition does not have any moral standard for one s interest and whether they are good or bad nor does it state... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Altruism is an impossible and irrational moral standard to live by because it concentrates on the beneficiary of the moral values, not on the values themselves. Rand states that we are not altruistic because of our desire to live. Rand states that altruism would find the desire to live evil because living or surviving requires one to concern themselves with their own interests. Altruism denies an individual the right of self care. Altruism permits no concept of a self respecting, self supporting man a man who supports his life by his own effort and neither sacrifices himself nor others (Rand 7). Altruism teaches those under its ruling, that morality is their enemy. They can only lose, since the benefactor cannot benefit from their own actions, all their losses are self inflicted. Rand draws a comparison to a scenario where an individual is a part of a Christmas exchange and they receive gifts they did not want or did not choose, but they are also not permitted to buy themselves the gifts they desire. One nation in particular has played a major role in the incredible discovery that would change the way people hunt, protect themselves, and engage in warfare. This nation is China, and the history of the firearm can be traced to the second century. But before we dive into the history of firearm, one must understand what a firearm is. Because hand to hand combat was the most popular means of combat at the time, this gave wielders a significant advantage to enemies just holding swords or knives. Designed only as a weapon, the fire lance would be loaded with poison tipped projectiles and after fired could be used as a spear. But as with any notable invention, its creators worried that others may discover how it was produced and begin making their own version of the identical device. In the eleventh century the ruling Dynasty of China, Song, were concerned about enemies learning the secrets behind gunpowder technology. In 1247 the Chinese used gunpowder for the first time in combat, most likely a cannon like weapon in the Siege of Seville to overcome their Muslim foes (http://www.themcs.org/weaponry/cannon /cannon.htm) (4).
