The 2010 Horizon Oil Rig Explosion
On April 20th, 2010 an explosion occurred that would be considered one of the worst oil spills in U.S.
history. The explosion was cause by a surge of natural gas that made it way to the Horizon rig s
platform that ignited. This caused the rig to capsize and sink, thus breaking risers that were being use
to counter act the large amount of pressure from oil and natural gasses (Pallardy, 2015). The explosion
killed 11 workers and injured 17 others. The explosion caused a massibe leak in the oil wellhead. It
took 87 days for the wellhead to be closed and it is estimated that over that time around 210 million
gallons of oil leaked into the gulf (Gulf Oil Spill, 2011). BP workers tried to activate a blowout
prevent that was part of the Horizon rig s design. This mechanism was supposed to close off any way
to draw out oil bu the mechanism malfunctioned due to the pressure form the gas and oil that cause the
explosion (Pallardy, 2015). The explosion happened a few miles from the Loop Current which is a
large current of warm water in the Gulf that covers a massive amount of distance making it easy from

In Descartes Discourse on Method and Meditations on First Philosophy, he explains the various steps
that should be taken in achieving genuine knowledge. Descartes rejects all beliefs in things that are
doubtable, and he then tries to unbiasedly reestablish what can be known for sure. One of his most
interesting argument is proving the existence of God. He hoped to provide a way for atheists, who
demand a logical explanation in God s existence, to believe in God. His rules of thought meant to
ensure that our knowledge rests upon a firm foundation. Descartes believed in God and also offered
arguments for his existence. He claims that there are two types of ideas; innate and fictitious
(Descartes, 45), and the idea that God is invented is false. In defending his stand, he starts off by
stating that something cannot come from nothing. He explains that the idea of God in him has an

He explains that mathematical ideas such as triangles are certain and independent of his mind. He
realizes that he is just as certain about God as he is about the mathematical ideas. He asserts that this is
natural as the ideas of God are the only ideas that imply God s existence. God is defined as an

Accents (Barth). Alvarez s Dominican background and her immigration to the United States
influenced her writing, especially in the novel How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents.
Alvarez was born in New York in 1950 but lived the first ten years of her life in the Dominican
Republic. At the time, Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina, a ruthless tyrant, held a dictatorship over the
Dominican Republic (Barth). How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents takes place at the time of this
dictatorship. Alvarez s father was involved in a plot to overthrow Rafael Trujillo and moved his family
back to New York when it failed (Barth). This abrupt uprooting was a culture shock to Alvarez who
