Manzanita Village is a student housing complex at UCSB that originally faced challenges with stormwater management due to its proximity to vernal pools and the ocean. The project was redesigned with bioswales, wetlands, and experimental plant palettes to treat stormwater runoff naturally before discharge. Water quality testing showed significant reductions in nitrates and phosphates. The redesign created habitat, reduced pollution, and provided educational opportunities while lowering costs through less irrigation and maintenance needs.
