Product Development
Definition
The methods, procedure, or arrangement which includes all functions required
to accumulate the Inputs, process or reprocess the inputs, and deliver the
marketable outputs (Goods).
Meaning of production.
Production can be explained as an act of either manufacturing or mining or
growing of goods. Production is a method employed for making or providing
essential goods and services for consumers. It is a process that puts
intangible inputs like ideas and requirements in use or action. It is a way
that transforms (convert) tangible inputs like raw-materials, semi-finished
goods and unassembled goods into finished goods or commodities.
Meaning of system
System is an arrangement or assembly of inter-dependent processes (activities) that
are based on some logic and function. Huge systems are often a collection
(assembly) of smaller sub-systems.
Meaningof production system
Inputs include raw-materials, machines, man-hours, components or parts, drawing,
instructions and other paper works.
Conversion process includes operations (actual production process). Operations may
be either manual or mechanical or chemical. Operations convert inputs into output.
Conversion process also includes supporting activities, which help the process of
conversion.
Output includes finished products, finished goods (parts), and services
Types of production system
Intermittent production system
Intermittent means something that starts (initiates) and stops at irregular (unfixed)
intervals (time gaps).
In the intermittent production system, goods are produced based on customer's orders.
These goods are produced on a small scale. The flow of production is intermittent
(irregular).
In other words, the flow of production is not continuous. In this system, large varieties of
products are produced. These products are of different sizes. The design of these products
goes on changing. It keeps changing according to the design and size of the product.
Therefore, this system is very flexible.
characteristics
1. The flow of production is not continuous.
2. The flow of production is not continuous.
3. The volume of production is small.
4. General purpose machines are used.
5. The sequence of operation goes on changing
as per the design of the product.
6. The quantity, size, shape, design, etc. of the product
depends on the customer's orders.
Types of intermittent production
system
1. Project production flows
project production flows, company accepts a single, complex order or contract. The order
must be completed within a given period of time and at an estimated cost.
2. Jobbing productionflows
Here, in jobbing production flows, company accepts a contract to produce either one or few
units of a product strictly as per specifications given by the customer. The product is
produced within a given period and at a fixed cost. This cost is fixed at the time of signing
the contract.
3. Batchproduction flows
In batch production flows, the production schedule is decided according to specific orders
or are based on the demand forecasts. Here, the production of items takes place in lots or
batches. A product is divided into different jobs. All jobs of one batch of production must be
completed before starting the next batch of production.
Continuous production system
In the continuous production system, goods are produced
constantly as per demand forecast. Goods are produced on a large
scale for stocking and selling. They are not produced on
customer's orders. Here, the inputs and outputs are standardized
along with the production process and sequence.
Types of continuous production system
1. Mass production flows
Here, company produces different types of products on a large-scale and stock them
in warehouses until they are demanded in the market .
The goods are produced either with the help of a single operation or uses a series of
operations.
2. Processproduction flows
Here, a single product is produced and stocked in warehouses until
it is demanded in the market. The flexibility of these plants is
almost zero because only one product can be produced.
Product Design
"Product design is the translation of intellectual
wisdom, requirements of the entrepreneurs, or needs
of the consumers, etc. into a specific product."
Meaning of Product Design
Factors Affecting Determining Product Design
The factors that affect a product design
1. Requirements of targeted customers.
2. Availability and access to necessary production
facilities.
3. Type and quality of raw-materials used to produce a
product.
4. Cost to price ratio.
5. Policy of quality standards.
6. Availability of plant and machineries.
7. Impact of upcoming product on existing products of the
company.
8. Reputation or goodwill of the company.
Essential Requirements of GoodProduct Design
1.Product must optimally perform its main function
(task).
2.It must be easy to repair at a low repair cost.
3.It must be very reliable to use.
4.It must follow principles of aesthetics.
5.It must be a durable one.
6.It can be easily produced in large numbers at
minimum production cost.
7.It must be simple to produce and use (handle).
8.It must also be compact.
Essential Requirements of GoodProduct Design
Product Development
Product means any marketable thing with some utility in it, produced either by a labor or
through series of automated processes.
Development is an act of making or achieving a continuous progress in something by
someone.
“Product Development is a creation, innovation, utility
enhancement or continuous improvement of earlier
features (design, service, etc.) of an existing product or
developing (manufacturing) an entirely new kind of
product to satisfy the requirements of its end-users
(consumers).”
1.Creation of an entirely new product or upgrading an existing
product by exploring all possibilities and outcomes.
2.Innovation of a new or an existing product to deliver better and
enhanced services to end-users.
3.Continuous improvement of a new product or enhancing an
existing product by giving preference to satisfy the demand of end-
users.
4.Enhancing the utility of a new product or upgrading features of
an existing product, for the personal and/or commercial use, to
expand the defined goal (objective).
