Manually creating references
1. Manually Creating References
If you cannot find a record for your references in a database or if it is a reference type other than
a journal article, you will need to manually create a record for the reference in EndNote.
1. In EndNote, click on the References menu and select New Reference or click on the New Reference
icon.
2. Select a Reference Type from the drop-down list at the top. Enter information with the correct
punctuation: commas, periods, and capitalization. EndNote will not correct it for you.
Each author name must be entered on separate lines
o Can be entered either as First Name Last Name or Last Name, Initials
o Examples: John C. Smith or Smith, J. C.(each initial must have a period after it)
Article titles should be entered in sentence case (only the first letter of the first word is capitalized)
There is no need to Bold, Italicize, or Underline parts of the reference. The output style will dictate
how each part of the reference will appear.
To save this reference, click on the small black ‘x’ in the upper right corner of your EndNote screen.
EndNote will ask if you want to save the changes that you made to the reference. Select Yes to save.
