During the FVE conference in Brussels on April 7, 2014, Katinka de Balogh, leader the global Veterinary Public Health activities of the FAO, presented the One-Health approach to highlight the importance of prevention, ensuring health and welfare of people and animals in a globalized environment:
• The benefit coming from the implementation of good health management in practice, both in terms of health and welfare, as well as, of financial sustainability
• The importance of coordinating actions in both sectors via a One-Health approach, with a particular focus on zoonotic diseases
• The role of the medical and veterinary profession in assuring these matters and educating the society
Katinka de Balogh is of Dutch and Hungarian origins and grew up in Latin-America. She studied veterinary medicine in Berlin and Munich and graduated and obtained her doctorate in tropical parasitology from the Tropical Institute of the University of Munich in 1984. In the late 80’s she had spent two years as a young professional at the Veterinary Public Health Unit of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva. In 2002 she started working at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome.

VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH: A FRONTIER IN
THE FIGHT AGAINST HUMAN DISEASE
Veterinary public health is another frontier in the fight
against human disease.1 The veterinary public health
scope includes the control and eradication of zoonoses,
diseases that are naturally transmitted between verte-
brate animals and man. These diseases pose a continu-
ous hazard to the health and welfare of the public.
There are more than 100 diseases categorized as
zoonoses, including salmonellosis. For example, ap-
proximately 20% of U.S. broiler chickens are contami-
nated with Salmonella, while more that 80% are con-
taminated with Campylobacter.2 The veterinary public
health scope, in addition to the control and eradication
of zoonoses, also includes the development and super-
vision of food hygiene practices, laboratory and re-
search activities, and education of the public.

The objective of this work is to contribute to valorization de Nephelium lappaceum by the characterization of kinetics of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum. The seeds were dehydrated until a constant mass respectively in a drying oven and a microwawe oven. The temperatures and the powers of drying are respectively: 50, 60 and 70°C and 140, 280 and 420 W. The results show that the curves of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum do not present a phase of constant kinetics. The coefficients of diffusion vary between 2.09.10-8 to 2.98. 10-8m-2/s in the interval of 50°C at 70°C and between 4.83×10-07 at 9.04×10-07 m-8/s for the powers going of 140 W with 420 W the relation between Arrhenius and a value of energy of activation of 16.49 kJ. mol-1 expressed the effect of the temperature on effective diffusivity.

INTRODUCTION
Good personal hygiene.
Hygienic food preparation: Food-borne
diseases can be largely avoided through
correct processing and hygienic food
preparation.
Avoid consumption of fruits that eaten by the
Animals & Birds.
Try to use Pasteurized products.
Vaccination for people: Vaccines are available
for some zoonoses and they should be made
use of. Abattoir workers, farmers and vets
should seek advice on Q fever vaccination. To
protect against Australian bat Lyssavirus, bat
carers are advised to have a rabies
vaccination.
Personal protection.
Maintain animal health: Farm biosecurity and
animal health programs, including the use of
vaccines, play an important role in reducing
the risk of some zoonotic diseases.
Care when pregnant: To reduce the risk of
toxoplasmosis, pregnant women should not
empty cat litter boxes and or handle pregnant
ewes.
Care when immuno-suppressed: People with
depressed immunity whether due to illness or
medical treatments, should avoid all exposure
to zoonotic diseases.
Suspect and stray animals: Animals that
appear ill, or carry skin infections should not
be handled without taking precautions.
Control of pest animals: Animals such as rats
or feral pigs or ticks can carry zoonotic
diseases and control programs will reduce the
likelihood of transmission to people.
The interface between humans, animals, and the
environments we share can also be a source of diseases
impacting public health and the social and economic well-
being of the world population. Such diseases, transmissible
from animals to humans through direct contact or though
food, water, and the environment, are commonly referred to
as “zoonotic diseases.”
The burden of infectious diseases in human populations in low-
and middle-income countries remains high in the majority of
cases.
The causative agents of Diseases of Unknown Origins (DUOs)
fall broadly into three groups: (1) known pathogens that were
not tested for or misdiagnosed, (2) previously unrecognized
but common pathogens (Eg; Parechovirus and human
metapneumovirus) and (3) newly emerging or re-emerging
pathogens (Eg; filoviruses, henipavirus, and coronaviruses).
