 National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and
Biotechnology says-
Mammography is an x-ray imaging
method used to examine the breast for the
early detection of cancer and other breast
diseases. It is used as both a diagnostic and
screening tool.
-mastography

 The goal of mammography is the early
detection of breast cancer, typically through
detection of characteristic masses or
microcalcifications.
 High quality mammographic images while
keeping low patient radiation dose.
 The ACR and MQSA have endorsed a QC
programme of specific duties required of the
radiologist, the medical officer and the
mammographer.
 QC deals with instruments and equipments.
 QA deals with people.
 The ultimate responsibility
Responsible for-
 Selecting qualified medical physicists and
mammographer and overseeing the activities
of the team regularly.
 Supervisionfor patient communication and
tracking i.e, quality patient care.
 The radiologist’s principal responsibility is
supervision of the entire QA programme.
 ROLES
 QC evaluation of the physical equipments
used to produce an image.
 To understand and apply how the different
technical aspects of the imaging chain
affects the resulting image.
 To adivise the mammographer.
 Review charts and records to ensure that
they are prepared properly and contains
necessary informations.
 Principal responsibility is to conduct an
annual performance evaluation of the
imaging system.
 Responsible for day to day QC
 Responsible for producing and monitoring all
control charts and logs for any trend that
might indicate problems.

The total annual time required for QC :160
hours.
