Mammals are named after their mammary glands, which produce milk to feed their young. They are classified into three main groups: monotremes, which lay eggs; marsupials, which carry their young in pouches; and placentals, which carry young in the womb. Placental mammals are further divided into 11 orders based on characteristics like diet, habitat, locomotion and teeth. Some key orders include insectivores, bats, rodents, rabbits, armadillos, whales, dugongs, elephants, carnivores like dogs, hoofed animals, and primates.
