BACKGROUND
 CI 199: Introduction to College
Research is an 8 week, 1 credit, library
course
 A mix of students, but mainly
freshman and seniors looking for 11th
hour credit
PROBLEMS
How to discuss college research skills
when most my students will no longer
have access to subscription databases?
How to discuss lifelong learning with a
diverse group of learners without
sounding condescending?
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
ACRL Standard 5.1.b.
 Identifies and discusses issues related
to free vs. fee-based access to
information
Student Learning Outcomes
 Describe how the filter bubble effects
information retrieval.
 Discuss issues related to free vs. fee-
based access to information.
CONTENT
 First 5 minutes of Eli Pariser TED talk
- Filter bubbles
 Free vs fee-based resources
- Define
- Practical reality about after graduation
 Discussion
DISCUSSION
What have you noticed online that tailors what
you see?-Facebook
-Google
-Yahoo
-Bing
-Indeed…
“Information is a
commodity”
- TV sites
- Youtube
- Netflix
- BuzzFeed
- News
- Amazon
- Ebay (shopping
sites)
DISCUSSION
What affect does the deep web have on your
research process?
- Harder to use
- Everything is in a different place
- Need to make sure sources are current
- Might not have access to what you want
DISCUSSION
What free resources can you use after you
graduate to find information in your
profession?
- Listservs
- Professional organizations
- Trade Journals
- Certain websites (RSS feeds)
- News
- Magazines
- Google (Scholar)
HOMEWORK
 Given that only 4% of the internet is freely
available using search engines:
- What are two different values of using free
web resources for your research?
- What is one value of using deep web
resources for your research?
- What is one value of using both resources
for your research?
 When you graduate, how will you find reliable
information to inform your opinions or to
learn more about trends in your profession?
VALUES OF USING FREE WEB RESOURCES FOR
YOUR RESEARCH?
 Open to anyone, anywhere.
 They cost nothing to access.
 Convenient to use.
VALUES OF USING DEEP WEB RESOURCES
FOR YOUR RESEARCH?
 Sources are more likely to have been
written or developed by experts, who
are identified.
 More efficient; specific search engines.
 “Deep web search gives you a lot of in
depth information on the particular
subject that you need to research were
as free web gives you breadth.”
WHEN YOU GRADUATE, HOW WILL YOU FIND
RELIABLE INFORMATION TO INFORM YOUR OPINIONS
OR TO LEARN MORE TRENDS IN YOUR PROFESSION?
 Government websites
 Professional organizations, websites, and journals
 “When I graduate with my degree in animal science
…and inevitably go on to veterinary school I plan on
using scholarly websites as well as government
websites, medical journals, books, etc. to help aid
me in my research. For veterinarians the Journal of
Animal Science, as well as the AAEP (American
Association of Equine Practitioners) publications…”
 “By using better free sources like Google Scholar to
find scholarly sources or other type of sources such
as social media, news articles, and magazines.”
WHAT I WILL CHANGE
 Split the topic into (at least) 2 classes
-Free/Deep web and Filter bubbles
-Free resources and research after
college
 [Online] Community posts rather than
individual responses
 Students still said they would use Google
Scholar
 The glaring omission of libraries as free
HOW TO GET RESEARCH
ARTICLES AFTER GRADUATION
 How to get research articles after graduating
 Create LibGuides for each discipline’s future
research
-University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
-Syracuse University
-University of Milwaukee
