MAKING FRIENDS
Read on the talk on “Making Friends”.
Good morning, boys and girls. Today I’m going to talk about making friends. Making friends can be difficult
nowadays especially with so much peer pressure. You are the odd one out if you do not belong to a group that sport a
certain hairstyle or wears clothes that are similar in fashion. This does not mean you should follow the crowd blindly.
In order to make friends, first of all you must possess a pleasing personality. You need to become genuinely
interested in other people and show kindness to others. If you want people to like you, make them feel important and do
it sincerely. Smile always. It costs nothing to smile but it enriches those who receive it. A smile cannot be bought or
borrowed. It comes from the heart. It creates happiness in the home and in the classroom.
We do get into arguments occasionally. Some people thrive on arguments though it gives them a sour
disposition and creates a depressing atmosphere around them. The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid
it. If you are wrong, admit it quickly and apologise to your friend. If other party continues arguing, excuse yourself and
walk away.
Boys and girls, it is of utmost importance to choose your friends carefully. If others try to persuade you to play
truant, smoke, steal, gamble or fight, dare to say No”. When you do wrong things, you will lose honest, good and upright
friends in no time. Walk away from those who try to influence you to do wrong things.
Be strong mentally and you will not be swayed by bad influences. The more you practise being mentally
strong, the easier it will become. It is dangerous to follow a crowd. You are treading on dangerous grounds if you mix
with the wrong type of friends who will stab you in the back at the very first opportunity that arises.
So, boys and girls, choose your friends wisely. Do not give in to peer pressure to do things that are wrong.
With that I thank you.

Writing an email
C. Read the passage below and answer the question that follows.
Most of us have experienced peer pressure at one time or another. Peers
are people of our age like our classmates. Peer pressure is when peers try to
influence how we behave or what we do or when they try to get us to do
something. It is not easy to resist peer pressure. But if we pay attention to
put own feelings and beliefs on what is right and what is wrong, we will gain
self-confidence. This will help us to stand firm, walk away and resist doing
something we do not want to do.
Parents and teachers always advise us to choose our friends wisely. Peer
pressure is the main reason why they say this. If we make friends with those
who cut classes, smoke or lie, we tend to imitate them and be like them. It is
always best to stay away from peers who are a bad influence. We can always
find other friends who know right from wrong.
Write an email to your friend, advising him/her
on how to stand up to peer pressure.
Your email must:
obe about 60 words
obe in continuous writing (not in note form)

How to stand up to peer pressure?
Dear Pink,
Well, to stand up to peer pressure, firstly, we need to know what
is right and wrong so that we will gain self-confidence. It will also
help us to stand firm. We should walk away and resist ourselves
from doing the wrong things. We must listen to our parents and
teachers who always advise us to choose our friends wisely.

Dear Pinky,
You have asked for my advices on the do’s and don’ts of being a good friend. Well, to be a good

  • 5. Read on the talk on “Making Friends”. Good morning, boys and girls. Today I’m going to talk about making friends. Making friends can be difficult nowadays especially with so much peer pressure. You are the odd one out if you do not belong to a group that sport a certain hairstyle or wears clothes that are similar in fashion. This does not mean you should follow the crowd blindly. In order to make friends, first of all you must possess a pleasing personality. You need to become genuinely interested in other people and show kindness to others. If you want people to like you, make them feel important and do it sincerely. Smile always. It costs nothing to smile but it enriches those who receive it. A smile cannot be bought or borrowed. It comes from the heart. It creates happiness in the home and in the classroom. We do get into arguments occasionally. Some people thrive on arguments though it gives them a sour disposition and creates a depressing atmosphere around them. The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it. If you are wrong, admit it quickly and apologise to your friend. If other party continues arguing, excuse yourself and walk away. Boys and girls, it is of utmost importance to choose your friends carefully. If others try to persuade you to play truant, smoke, steal, gamble or fight, dare to say No”. When you do wrong things, you will lose honest, good and upright friends in no time. Walk away from those who try to influence you to do wrong things. Be strong mentally and you will not be swayed by bad influences. The more you practise being mentally strong, the easier it will become. It is dangerous to follow a crowd. You are treading on dangerous grounds if you mix with the wrong type of friends who will stab you in the back at the very first opportunity that arises. So, boys and girls, choose your friends wisely. Do not give in to peer pressure to do things that are wrong. With that I thank you.

  • 25. C. Read the passage below and answer the question that follows. Most of us have experienced peer pressure at one time or another. Peers are people of our age like our classmates. Peer pressure is when peers try to influence how we behave or what we do or when they try to get us to do something. It is not easy to resist peer pressure. But if we pay attention to put own feelings and beliefs on what is right and what is wrong, we will gain self-confidence. This will help us to stand firm, walk away and resist doing something we do not want to do. Parents and teachers always advise us to choose our friends wisely. Peer pressure is the main reason why they say this. If we make friends with those who cut classes, smoke or lie, we tend to imitate them and be like them. It is always best to stay away from peers who are a bad influence. We can always find other friends who know right from wrong.
