A mainframe computer is a large, high-speed computer that supports numerous workstations. It serves as the primary memory of a computer system. Mainframe computers can cost between several thousand to several million dollars and were typically used by scientists and large companies. Mainframes support features like virtual storage, multiprocessing, spooling, batch processing, and time sharing. They are capable of handling hundreds or even thousands of users simultaneously and hold the majority of data stored on Earth.
