Carlo Daffara the Technical director of Cloudweavers, and formerly head of research and development at Conecta, a consulting firm specializing in open source systems and distributed computing; Italian member of the European Working Group on Libre Software and co-coordinator of the working group on SMEs of the EU ICT task force on competitiveness. Since 1999, works as evaluator for IST programme submissions in the field of component-based software engineering, GRIDs and international cooperation. Coordinator of the open source platforms technical area of the IEEE technical committee on scalable computing, co-chair of the SIENA EU cloud initiative roadmap editorial board and part of the editorial review board of the International Journal of Open Source Software & Processes (IJOSSP).
Today, the boundaries between the general purpose PCs, the servers and the embedded systems are more blurred. These computers are sharing same platforms, same peripherals. For example, an x86/Mac PC can be used as a server, an x86/PowerPC CPU can be used in an embedded system like portable navigation device (PND). On the other way, the popular embedded processor StrongARM was a powerful desktop PC processor for the DEC workstation, and the embedded systems often also act servers, like NAS (Network Attached Storage). As same as the hardware suppliers, the OS suppliers port their products into the desktop PCs, servers and embedded systems.

5. The dimensions – State of the art
Early mainframe systems were housed in enormous, room-
sized metal boxes or frames, which is probably how the
term mainframe originated
Starting around 1990, mainframe processors and most of
their I/O devices became physically smaller, while their
functionality and capacity continued to grow. Mainframe

about the size of a large refrigerator.

12. About the expense
Because mainframes have a high initial acquisition cost in
comparison to distributed systems, many people mistakenly
believe that they are more expensive to own.
Years of TCO (total cost of ownership) analyses, however,
consistently prove that mainframes offer more processing
power for the dollar than distributed servers.
This cost-per-MIPS ratio improves every year.

According to IBM, it would take approximately 1,500 x86 servers to provide
the capacity of a z10 mainframe.
A z10 mainframe consumes about 85 percent less energy for comparable

that the mainframe is among the "greenest" computing solutions on
the market.
