This document describes the Magnoliaceae family of flowering plants. It notes that the family includes 10 genera and around 100 species of trees and shrubs found primarily in eastern Asia, eastern North America, and parts of South America and India. The plants have alternate, simple leaves with large stipules. Their large, fragrant flowers are actinomorphic and bisexual or unisexual, with numerous stamens and carpels arranged spirally on an elongated axis. The fruit is an aggregate of berries or follicles. Some species provide valuable timber and ornamentals, while others have medicinal uses.
