2. • Big mask head – makes it looks more important and the company is eye
catching.
• Facial expression – looking straight at you, direct mode of address.
Compels you to look at the magazine, drawing your attention. The facial
expression is calm and solemn, making it sophisticated.
• Close ups/ Mid shots – All the models shown have one of these two, this
makes them the subject of the canvas and that our eyes would
automatically zoom into their face as it’s the most prominent feature.
• Colour pallet – makes everything look sleeker and more sophisticated as
there is not much going on to distract you from the model. This makes it
more appealing to the eye as its all neutral tones and there's no bold or
bright colours that stand out,
• The type of clothing – this suggest their target audience to be more
mature elegant and nice. Draws in a more mature crowd. However, it also
has the effect that it could draw a younger audience that wants to look
mature and less childish.
• Sell lines – there are very few sell lines and only found in one of the
RUSSH magazine photos I picked out. The reason I did this is because I
wanted to see what a lot going on would look like compared to the rest.
• Conclusion I got from these photos -
• Facial expression draws your attention.
• Sell lines make it seem less mature and sophisticated.
• Neutral colour pallet draws in a more mature audience,
3. • Close up – the close up of all these models make it seem like they are
confronting you with something, especially as all of the photos use
direct mode of address. This draws your attention as its more engaging
which could appeal to a lot of people, compels you too look at the
magazine compared to others,
• Big Logo Brand – The brand YOHO! Uses different types of font
depending on who they are targeting the magazine to. This could be a
clever trick as the consumers know what they are going to find inside of
the magazine and if that it would appeal to them.
• Color Pallet – Simple and limited color pallet gives it a 'cooler' look. This
would attract a wide variety of audiences as its not childish to the point
where it would put of older customers, but it's not too sophisticated,
• Models – The models that they use would also attract consumers,
especially with the sell line 'something kris something new'. This tells us
that there are new styles that the model 'kris' has, which could inspire a
lot of people to dress like him – setting a trend.
• Facial expressions – The facial expressions in my opinion has one of the
greatest impacts on these magazines as it draws your attention even
more, bringing out emotions of stoniness which in today's society would
correlate to 'hot' - all four of them has a careless expression and some
with furrowed brows.
• Conclusion I got from these photos -
• The font and the style of the magazine determines who the audience
will be.
• To attract a wider variety of consumers, facial expression could do this.
• Not all magazines need sell lines.
4. Models – The use of a familiar face could have a big impact on who
reads your magazine because people would want to know what they
have to share. Famous artists with loads of fans could promote your
brand.
Logo – The logo/masthead doesn’t always have to be the same for
every magazine and placing it differently or editing it so that some
letters are behind gives it character and more uniqueness, a personality
to the magazine instead of being a page where the only thing that
changes are the people.
Mise en scene – A plain background or a blurred one makes the model
stand out even more compared to if there was a lot going on in the
background. This would appeal to a lot of people as it makes looking at
the subject with ease and directs your eyes to the model instead of
looking around them.
Font – The font you use has a massive impact because they need to
correlate to the style of the magazine and not stand out too much, it
needs to blend with the language of the magazine and not disrupt the
theoretical pattern that they have.
Close up – The close of all the models shows the torso and above, this
makes it seem like were almost standing on equal ground and that its
more metaphorically approachable, compared to if it was a low angle
shot, we would feel like we are below them.
Conclusion of what I learnt -
The angle of the photo could either attract or repel and audience.
A masthead gives the magazine more depth and feel.
Using famous people would be able to promote your brand
significantly.
