2. Magazine codes and conventions
Masthead- An eye catching title, normally at the top of the page. It is important it attracts the potential buyer.
Secondary lead- a sneak preview of what stories are inside the magazine.
Splash- main story on the front page accomplished with a subtitle and sometimes an image.
Spread- story that covers more than one page.
Strapline- subheading
Tag- An individual word which interests and attracts the reader. Example; new, exclusive (gives the magazine a unique feature)
Exclusive- When no one else covers the story, only one magazine. Editors may pay or buy story's from interviewees.
Headline- main statement which is usually in bold and large font, describing the main story.
Kicker- story which stands out from the rest of the page, usually in a different font.
Lead story- a splash from the main story.
3. All of the Teen Vogue magazines
use direct address which I
believe is a successful way to
engage the reader and is an
idea I will interpret into my own
design.
This Kendall Jenner design
as a more sophisticated
design to it, which I
personally think looks very
sleek and preferred more
than the other designs.
The positioning of the
two top models is
another technique I will
consider into my design
as I think it gives a
unique style
The simplistic
secondary leads of
what is inside the
magazine is very
eye catching and
again attracts the
reader
successfully.
I prefer the masthead going
over the image of the model
and I feel it doesn’t look as
lost within the magazines
design. Which is compared
between the top images to
the bottom.
4. The range and choice of colour is
very attractive and distinctive
through the ‘Bazzar’ magazine. I
like the way we can interpret this
colour ‘Red’ as power or even
refer to the traditional lipstick
colour which links nicely with the
beauty magazine.
The design and colours of
red and white give a
sense of maturity and
sophistication which is
defiantly the aim for my
design.
The photography is also a very
successful aspect as it’s a
close up image with engaging
direct of address.
Again it uses them short
sections of catchy
secondary leads which I
will take into account
when designing my own
magazine
However I do not like the way the mast
head does not take as much attention as
the ‘Teen vogue’, I feel as if it seems lost
within the background
I also like the simple tags
used throughout which
again is a successful way to
engage the buyer.
5. The cosmopolitan
magazine as a very unique
eye to their fashion
magazine as they use a
long shot of the model to
display there whole outfit
including their shows, This
is a thought to consider in
my design if I an
interpreting clothing.
The design is
made to look like
there is a lot going
on throughout the
front page which
does grab
attention to the
potential buyer.
Through the splash on
the front page is also an
element which is
important to consider as
it gives the buyer an
idea of what they are
going to read and what
fashion stories are
inside.
With the colour
scheme I prefer the
pink background to
the blue as I feel
like we can
interpret pink with
typical girly fashion
