This proposal is for a 1-minute celebratory video about York to be shown on YouTube and a 60-second exhibition version. The video will use double exposure to show the silhouette of York Minster with modern scenes of young people enjoying the city inside the silhouette. This represents York's history and roots alongside modern life. Background research found that local youth see York as boring, so the video aims to change this perspective by showing York's culture and history and that there is plenty to do compared to other UK places. The creator has experience making double exposure videos and editing skills from college courses.

IDEA
For the client, York Mediale, I have decided to create a video based
product. The product will focus on celebrating and promoting
appreciation for York and will last about one minute in length. The
outcome of the project will be a short video designed to appear on
sites like YouTube (6-10 second version). An extended version of the
video will also be transformed into an exhibition (60 second version).
For the exhibition, the projection will be on a loop. The project will be
a double exposure video with a still shot of the silhouette of York
Minster and, within the silhouette, scenes of young people enjoying
themselves and more modern areas of York will be playing. The video
will be projected onto an old dress or some other old garment. This
old outfit and image of the Minster is to represent York’s history and
roots and the images/videos playing within silhouette will be of
modern day York but more specifically, younger people enjoying the
city. The two of them being together in the same project is my way of
explaining to my audience, even though the two scenes seem
separate, they are coexisting in the samearea.
BACKGROUND
Conducting my own survey, as well as completing secondary
research, allowed an insight to York that only seems prevalent
amongst those that live here: they believe York to be boring. Initially,
my idea was to encourage businesses and entertainment (aimed at
the target audience of 16-24 years) to branch into York. After
thinking for some time, I began to understand that York was a
heritage site and a popular tourist destination for that very reason.
Realising this, it occurred to me that I should try and convince my
audience to change their perspective on York and try to encourage
them to see it for its wealthy culture and history. I want to also try to
make them understand that there is plenty to do, more so than other
places in the UK, especially where I live. People tend to bore of the
place they live as they are there most of their time and things lose
2. their excitement after a few times- this happens for most people and
their hometowns, it doesn’t mean York is boring. This is what I want
to make my audienceunderstand.
EXPERIENCE
Over the past few days, I have been perfecting the steps it takes to
create a professional looking double exposure video. Using tutorials
online, I have produced several experiments as practising the
techniques solidifies the method for me. It also let me see what areas
I could adjust to fit my vision. I have also been using Adobe
Photoshop and Premiere Pro for the last two years at York College
for projects, as well as for mediaprojects in GCSE media.
