6. At the beginning of the 19th century, Bauer is one of the first companies
ever to publish a free advertising paper in Germany: the
Rothenburgsorter Zeitung. In the 1920s the Extrablatt am Montag (a
special edition on Monday) is established, which later becomes a sports
newspaper.
The weekly radio magazine Rundfunk-Kritik emerges at the end of the
1920s and quickly reaches a print run of more than half a million copies.
With magazine titles that were stylistically influential in their respective
segments and which swiftly became best-sellers – to the tune of several
million copies –, the publishing house succeeds in breaking into the
magazine market in Germany after the end of the Second World War.
In the 1950s and 1960s Bauer makes a name for itself with its
programme and youth magazines.
The 1970s sees the formation of the women's weeklies’ segment with
the magazines tina and bella.
In the 1980s and 1990s the portfolio is expanded to include shares in
the private television broadcaster RTL II, the private radio station Radio
Hamburg as well as – with the acquisition of the traditional daily paper
Magdeburger Volksstimme – the largest daily newspaper in northern
Saxony-Anhalt.
