What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
1. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
One institution that would most likely distribute my media product would be the large music
magazine distributors and editors in the UK. There are several different huge magazine distributors
in the UK that help to publish the largest music magazines in the world. These music magazines can
be distributed across the country. These music magazines would then be sold to supermarkets, off-
licences, corner shops, book shops and any other places that could sell them. A good example would
be retail shops like WH Smiths, these shops are dedicated to selling books and magazines, generally
having whole isles dedicated to selling magazines. The most common place that these magazines are
sold, especially in the UK, is in Newsagents. These shops specialise in selling magazines and
newspapers and would therefore sell as much as they can, so would import more magazines.
EMAP
One of the largest music magazine publishers is the multi-media company
EMAP specialising in the production of magazines. They are a British
company, EMAP standing for East Midlands Allied Press, was founded in
1947 and in 2006, owned a revenue of £1.154 billion. EMAP are responsible for producing popular
music magazines in the past 30 years. For example, they published Smash Hits magazine and The
Face magazine. However, I think that this company may not distribute my media product as the
music magazines that it did publish are no longer distributed and neither fit into the same rock genre
that my music magazine fits into.
Bauer Media Group
Bauer Media are a multinational media company originating in Germany in 1875.
They operate in 15 countries across the world and as of 2010, owned a revenue
of £2.129 billion selling 32 million magazines every week. Bauer Media own two
of the largest music magazines in the world, Kerrang and Q. Kerrang has
expanded since becoming a magazine and has launched its own TV channel
airing music videos. Q magazine has also expanded into its own radio channel, Q
Radio, and its own TV channel, Q TV. I think that it is more likely that this kind of
company would distribute my magazine as it published other magazines similar
in the genre to mine. However, it is probable that this company would not
publish my magazine as it is a huge company and would not be interested in
publishing a smaller music magazine to work with.
IPC Media
IPC Media is a UK based digital publisher which specialised in consumer magazines. The company
was founded in 1958 and sells around 350 million magazine copies each year. The company
distributors one of the largest and most iconic music magazines in the world, NME magazine. In
2001, Time Inc took over the company. I don't think that IPC Media would publish my magazine as
the company currently only distribute larger magazines and would so not be interested in my
product.
