Magazine Pitch
Name:
FEEDBACK
I have decided to go with the name ‘Feedback’ as in a music term
it means for the speakers to give out a noise because for example
the guitar is too close to the speaker. So the idea behind the name
is that the magazine is the speaker giving out all the output
(articles etc…) and the audience is the guitarist who feeds back.
What I want from this magazine is for it to always be related to the
audience and I think the name FEEDBACK is perfect for the
meaning I want the magazine to have. All magazines I have
looked at in my analysis I noticed they all had very short names
and they were all one word as well: Q, NME and Mojo. These are
all effective because they either have a play on words like NME
which clearly sounds like ‘enemy’. And also they are easy to
remember. I want my magazines name to be memorable and have
meaning to it. However I have noticed my name is about medium
in sizing that it’s a little longer than the other names but music
magazine’s like Rolling Stones use two words and similar sized
words so I still think my magazine will be memorable as long as I
make the logo and title stand out.
Genre: Rock/ alternative
rock (also all types)
I want my magazine to connect with and relate to as many people as
possible so I feel like if I tie myself down to just one genre I will not be able
to reach out to as many people as I can. Based on my survey results the
most popular genre is rock/ alternative rock and heavy metal. I am going
mainly focus on this but I know that majority of people listen to a variety
of music but the most popular music is always in the UK Top 40 as the
show tells the UK what are the top songs of the week, so I can focus on the
rock/ alternative rock within the UK Top 40 mainly. This means I am going
to follow what these artists do but obviously my magazine can include
people who aren’t in the UK Top 40 and cover general pop as not
everyone does listen to those types of genre that are in the UK Top 40. The
magazines I have looked at either orientate themselves with a single genre
like rock or the magazines I looked at seem to be host to a variety of
genre’s included in their magazines. For example Q one week can have
Bruno Mars and then the next they can include a band called Elbow which
is going from pop to alternative rock. I think going for the variety would be
better for my magazine as I would have an abundance of information and
artists to go off and it would be hard to go find stories and the latest
information about peoples favourite artists when they are in a not so
popular genre. I am still going to focus on what the people in my survey
want.
Frequency and initial price
Magazines usually allow time between their next publication. A week or even a
monthly magazine is usually seen as the public would not be able to afford the
magazine daily for example. Also the magazine company would not be able to
produce enough content for the magazine as they need time for stories and
interviews to happen. NME is released weekly and has no charge. This has
helped it stay current but also widely available. Additionally, because I am
basing my magazine around rock/ alternative rock I have lots of content to
cover so this allows me to bring it out weekly. I said I want to follow the artists
who perform within the platform of the UK Top 40 and all the rock/ alternative
rock and heavy metal, and this comes out weekly when it comes to the UK Top
40 and anytime for that genre of rock/ alternative rock and heavy metal, so
because of this factor I should follow their schedule so I am going to release a
magazine on a weekly basis and this is similar to NME, I will not follow the
pattern of the time rock/ alternative rock and heavy metal come into the music
market as it is a random schedule . Obviously I don’t want to copy NME Now
that the frequency is decided I am going to come up with an initial price. I like
the way NME have a free magazine but still get many readers and I don’t want
my audience to feel limited by the price of my magazine and not want to pick
it up just because it’s a few pounds more than they would want to pay. This is
why I am going to make my magazine free. It will make people feel like they
can pick up and read the magazine due to them not having to pay for it and
this will hopefully help me build an audience.
Attitude
My magazine will not be serious like other magazines. I read all these
sophisticated magazines with big words that people need a dictionary
just to read through articles. My audience is also between the ages of
13-18 and they are still in school and I can guarantee from my
experience and everyone else's experience at college that people either
want to relax or be out having fun in their free time. I want the fun to
come through in my magazine. I don’t want it to make my audience feel
like they should be acting like they are in their 20’s even though they are
only in their teens. This is why I've decided not to go down the route of
huge sophistication and have a chilled approach to my magazines
attitude. I don’t want my magazine to feel like another piece of school
work they need to read through but I want it to be the magazine that
gets people thinking that they cant wait to get some free time to read
FEEDBACK. I want my audience to feel like they can stay young and
free. As well I understand that kids want to be rebellious and be as far
away from rules as possible so I will reflect the attitude of rebellion into
the format as I want my features to go against the rules of normal
magazines due to rebellious behaviour from my age group which is
essentially teenagers.
Style
The outside of my magazine will have a slight structure because I
would like the style to be associated with my magazine if you see
any other foreign objects using my colours. My style will be darker
colours but I will use protruding bright colours that go well with
darker colours to vary with the front cover but additionally make the
front cover stand out more than other magazines. I noticed that not
just music magazines have a particular colours such as bright
yellows and reds and to make my magazine stand out not just from
music but normal magazines I will include darker colours to stand
out from the whole magazine crowd. However when I get into the
magazine I will keep to darker colours as that resembles rebellion
and rock very well but due to the variety of alternative rock to heavy
metal and classic rock. Once I get into the magazines inner pages I
will style the pages around the artists so if I have someone like Red
Hot Chilli Peppers I will use red and other dark colours for example
but for another artist who is someone like P!nk (Pink) I would
obviously use the colour pink and much more vibrant colours than I
would with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. So my styling will be much to
do with the artist but maybe if I have a segment with lots of artists
will most likely go with darker more obscene colours to let the
pictures of all the artists stand out.
Contents of magazine
The publication of my magazine is going to be weekly as it would help my magazine stay as relevant as possible. Rock and alternative
rock is always providing us with new content and there is so much to go off so I can have lots of my content based around this genre.
Also because I don’t want to just limit my magazine to this genre I have already talked about using multiple genres too so then I can
have even more content to cover and this will attract more readers. The magazine would be around 60 pages just like other magazines
as I would like my magazine to have as little amount of pages to do with advertisement as possible as I would want people to pick my
magazine up for the content and not have to be overcome with all the advertisements. However I am going to have to include
advertisements in my magazine because it is free and I would not be able to reproduce copies over and over without any revenue from
things like advertisements for example. But also some advertisements are useful and people do like them as they find out new
information or discover new things like new festivals or new clothing for example. So where as advertisements are annoying they are
essential for my magazine to continue producing the next publication but they can also help relay information to the audience which
could attract people itself. I also want to include a section on new musician's every week. Whether they are different to my genre of rock
or not I think giving a place for an unheard musician to create a name will attract other new musicians to promote their music and also
help the customers go deeper into finding new music and possibly discovering their new favourite artists. Or perhaps it could
encourage them to make music as they grow from college into university and also grow as people which I think would be a great thing
for my magazine to do. My magazine will also contain all the generic stuff I consider a magazine of todays day and age would need.
Essentially I should include a front cover which is obvious. Next a contents page so the customer can navigate my magazine. Also other
features like double page spreads. Then I will have generic pages which I can just put content onto. This is all basic stuff but I will include
it as it can look good in magazines and its also great ways of presenting information on a page. Furthermore, I am going to include an
email on a page somewhere so people can email FeedBack and essentially give feedback. This would help the magazine complete its
meaning and have a way of improving and knowing what to include in the magazine. People who really like the magazine they read
can have a real effect on the magazine and I can take a huge inspiration from the emails.
