The document summarizes research conducted for a music magazine. It found that the target audience is primarily male teenagers who listen to rock music for 3+ hours daily. They want interviews with artists, recommendations for new music, and info on festivals. To appeal to this audience, the magazine will focus heavily on music content, include some artists favored by males, and have a casual tone without extensive text. It will cover multiple genres and be released weekly to maintain relevance.
2. The gender split is 66.67% male to 33.33% female. This shows the majority of my readers will be male but there is
still a big part of the audience is still female. Although females did take part in my survey from this data I am going
to tailor to a male audience because there are more males who took part in my survey, however I will still pay
attention to the female audience I have as I want my magazine to appeal to everyone. I will include artists on my
front cover which are more liked by men then females due to the gender split. I will include a male on the front
cover as it will appeal to the people who I have surveyed (because majority of them are male.)
3. My audience appear to all be within the same age range so I will make my magazine tailor to them, this does not
mean my magazine will necessarily be based around teenagers but it will include things for them because they have
played a big part in my research and surveys. This also means I will include, teenagers on my magazine so they can
resonate with each other and feel welcomed to my magazine, this is an example of how I will include teenagers in
my magazine. I will make my magazine slightly informal as teenagers aren’t very serious and would like to read
something that engages them and not something that is too mature but not extremely childish. The reason I have so
many teenagers in my results is because I advertised my survey to people who doing the same course at college as
me so I only got replies from them. I did advertise my survey on Facebook but I presume that no one over 18 replied
to my survey.
4. Most people who took my survey like to listen to
rock/alternative rock/heavy metal and take up at least a third
of the vote. The rest of the vote is taken up by individual
music taste as only one person has voted for every other
subject. Due to this I will include multiple music genres in my
music magazine and not just base it around one genre. This
will open up my audience and allow me to not be constricted
with the amount of music I can write about.
5. Most of the audience listen to more than 3 hours of music daily
which is actually a huge fraction of the day if you think about it.
You sleep 8 hours of the day and that means 3 out of the 16
hours people are awake they are listening to music. How many
things do you do for 3 hours a day. This shows that my audience
are really into their music and I must make this my main focus of
the magazine. I shouldn’t make the magazine about other things
like fashion or lifestyle as much as I should base the magazine
around music more than any other thing.
6. It appears that many people listen to music during their free
time so a magazine would be perfect for that section of the
audience as a magazine could give them something to read.
Additionally they say they listen to music as it is something to
relate to as a way to escape from reality and the troubles of
their day. Also it seems to make people happy and lighten
their mood. This is what I want my magazine to emulate and
make people feel like. Another person talks about music being
everywhere so they have got used to hearing music
constantly so they would like to read my magazine as if I put it
everywhere it would grow on them too. I want my magazine
to be relatable like the music people listen to as well so I will
not fully surround my content about music but also general
information and additional content which can relate to some
of my audience.
7. The magazines people already read are the magazines I want to
initially base mine around so I know that I will have to stand out
from the crow but still stick to the same ideologies of these
magazines. The most popular magazine is NME and I presume they
have picked that up because it is free but still up to a high quality so
that makes me think about the price and demand of the magazine I
am making. However I know that other people will spend money on
magazines as people have bought or at least picked up Mojo or Q
magazine.
8. Peoples opinions are different when it comes to style but
hopefully from my survey I can put together a style that would
appeal to as many people as possible. Eye catching is a big factor
and this is something I should obviously make sure my magazine
is. This will help people look at my magazine and cause people
to more invested in possibly buying my magazine. A wide variety
of music is mentioned which can be achieved. My main artists
will be focused around rock and alternative rock artists but
occasionally I will stray away and include pop artists or RnB
rappers for example. Someone said they would like a vintage
looking magazine however my magazine could look vintage I
font think I will let this be a main focus as I think it represents a
different music culture. Not too much text is another thing I am
going to include as well because my readers are in education so
they already spend all their time reading articles and case
studies and I know from being a student myself I would like to
avoid as much reading as possible unless its for an article and
then I want as much information about my favourite artist as
possible.
9. I want my magazine to have little text as my readers are in
education and would not want to read monotonous text. I will
make sure my text in concise and gets straight to the point.
People all seem to want interviews as they would like the latest
gossip on their favourite artist. So I must ask exclusive and
intriguing questions for the artists. This will allow me to get
new and interesting information that my audience want to
hear. People also want to have recommendations on who
would be best to listen to and new artists that are upcoming. I
could do articles about this or even make a segment dedicated
on finding the next big artists however I could struggle as there
may not be a new artist to talk about so I could just not include
the segment for that week. And finally information on festivals
and news will be another addition to my magazine and this will
be displayed in adverts and other pages to fill pages etc…
10. The top score is that people have never bought a magazine and I
cant really go along saying I wont actually be publishing a
magazine as there is the case that not that many people may
purchase magazines because of price or disinterest so I can do a
number of things. I can make my magazine free so people are
more likely to pick my magazine up from a store and it could
change the demographic for people who have never bought a
magazine before. Next I could just follow the second leading
vote so I will either release y magazine weekly or every two to
three months as that’s when people purchase them. I could
make a huge magazine jam packed with content however if my
magazine is not relevant and not out much, so people will not
remember to pick it up. So I think releasing my magazine weekly
is the way forward as that’s when people mostly pick up their
music magazines and it will help my magazine stay relevant.
