1. Draft Proposal
Outline your production
I am looking to base my magazine on the style of Indie. This is because I have looked
at a few pre-existing magazines and the ones I like the best and sell well are indie.
Also, I did my survey and a majority of people who answered the question on which
style of music they would like to read about, answered indie or pop.
The magazines I looked at and am taking inspiration from is mainly NME and a bit
from Q and Kerrang and Hot Press. They each have different styles but I can take
some ideas from all of them.
I like the fresh look about this magazine. It also brings in his
instrument as a prop subtly. The front cover is also quite clean
so doesn’t have loads of writing everywhere getting in the
way. It looks simple and easy to read. Also the logo is simple
coloured. This sets a neutral tone for all magazines and that
way the producers can use any colour scheme they want for
every magazine without it clashing with the logo.
This magazine has a busy look about it. This sells more
stories and I like the bang across the top which stands out.
Also the main story isn’t too big to take up a lot of room, this
allows a lot of stories to be sold on the cover.
This magazine has a good image for the front cover. Also the
background has titles and lyrics for the songs written by Alex
Turner for his band. This adds personality and individuality to
the cover. Also the cover is all about this one story, there isn’t
any advertising for any other articles at all.
The purpose of my magazine
The main purpose of my magazine is to inform readers about the up and coming gigs
that my musicians that will be in my magazine. I will also be doing interviews with
my artists and then an article about the artist themselves. This is what readers mainly
want to be reading as it is the most informative and can as lobe entertaining. Also I
don’t want my magazine to look basic, so I’m not doing a question and answer
session.

2. My magazine will be 50/50 with honesty. I will write good things about the artists
however I won’t be giving them exactly what they need to hear as it needs to be
truthful and this sometimes makes the article more gripping and keeps the readers
wanting more.
Target Audience
My target audience is hopefully going to be mid to late teenagers. This will be a wide
audience as by doing the artist I hope to I will attract girls and boys. Also, they are the
age group who will be wanting to keep up with the latest from artists and hear about
new and also up and coming musicians. The additional features I will hopefully be
putting in my magazine will also reach out to my target audience as they are things
like reviews of concerts and festivals which are what younger people like. Also, the
advertising for up and coming gigs and festivals are what teenagers want to look out
for rather than younger people or older people.
Business Model
I will make my magazine a monthly issue as this will allow me to put more detail into
what I am writing about and isn’t too much to ask for a customer as buying a weekly
magazine makes my target audience smaller as I would have to aim for the higher end
of the socio-economic scale.
I will also offer a subscription which will be a discounted price compared to the shop
price. This is what will draw people in as they will save money rather than buying it
for the full price in the shops. There will also be a twitter section I am thinking to add
as this gets people interacting with the magazine through social media. Also I will
have a website for the magazine as this is keeping it up to date with the world and is
more likely to be successful as it is linked to the online world, therefore opening up
the target audience wider.
I will need a magazine logo. This will help people to see who the magazine is made
from. Also, it will be in the top left corner where every other magazine has them or
across the top if it’s a long title.
Content of magazine
I want my front cover to be in black and white grey scale. This will give it an indie
edge and make the colour of the text on the front cover stand out more. My double
page spread however will be in colour as it adds excitement and depth to the article it
will be next to.
The layout of my magazine, I am thinking about doing a double page picture spread,
either with no writing or an opening for my article. This would attract more customers
as it could double as a poster for the consumer. This adds a unique selling point and
adds value to the magazine.
For example this one of Amy Winehouse has a
whole page for the photo, I like this because it
means the consumer can rip this out of the
magazine and use it as a poster.

3. This one acts as an introduction for the
article which will follow up after this main
photo page. This also allows the reader to get
an overall idea of what is to follow as it gives
a brief overview.
Another unique feature I am thinking of adding is on the contents page, a picture to go
with each story and the brief overview. This makes the page look more busy and full
of life and information.
Style of writing:
I am thinking of doing a style of article which is an article rather than interview. This
makes it look more mature and makes the target audience older, which would rather
an article about the artist. The purpose will be to inform them of an event or
something that’s happened to the artists. I think I should do this about a past tour or
up and coming tour. The supporting material on the sides should be information about
tours or a fact file about the artists.
